The Crosstrek is one of Subaru’s most popular models, offering reasonable pricing and legitimate off-road capabilities. A hybrid powertrain was introduced as an option for the 2026 model year, and for 2027, it continues to offer improved fuel efficiency and slightly sprightlier performance.

What’s New for the 2027 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid
The current third-generation Subaru Crosstrek was introduced in 2024, the Crosstrek Hybrid was added in 2026, and there aren’t any significant changes as the model rolls into the 2027 model year. The Sport model was available with the regular gasoline engine in 2026, but it’s offered only in hybrid form for 2027. The top-shelf Crosstrek Limited Hybrid now comes standard with a power moonroof and gets a new Ignition Red color that replaces last year’s Pure Red and Lithium Red Pearl hues. Sapphire Blue Pearl is now exclusive to the Crosstrek Hybrid.
Design
Pretty much the only exterior clues that differentiate the Crosstrek Hybrid from its non-hybrid sibling are badges and some additional hybrid-only color options. That means the Crosstrek Hybrid, like the standard version, looks mostly like a hatchback (like its Impreza sibling) that sits high off the ground and wears an aggressive body kit. It’s a handsome machine, but unfortunately Subaru doesn’t offer the off-road-ready Wilderness model with the hybrid powertrain.
Powertrain
Like the standard Crosstrek, the Crosstrek Hybrid features a 2.5-liter horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine, but it’s heavily modified for efficiency. That engine is assisted by a pair of electric motors powered by a small lithium-ion battery pack, and combined output comes to 194 horsepower. That’s 14 hp more than the non-hybrid model, and it results in quicker acceleration at low speeds. The hybrid is also more fuel-efficient, with EPA ratings of 36 mpg in the city, on the highway, and combined. That compares with the non-hybrid’s 26 mpg city, 33 highway, and 29 combined ratings. The improved efficiency means the Crosstrek Hybrid should get up to 598 miles of range, which is an improvement of more than 100 miles over the gas version. The only subcompact crossover competitor to the Crosstrek Hybrid is the similarly powerful Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid. The Toyota gets better mileage at 42 mpg combined but has a little less ground clearance than the Subaru. Toyota also relies on a small electric motor to power the rear wheels, whereas Subaru uses a traditional setup with driveshafts and axles that should prove superior in low-traction situations. The 2027 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid can tow up to 1,500 pounds, which matches the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid’s maximum rating.

Interior
The Crosstrek Hybrid’s straightforward cabin looks just like the non-hybrid’s, though the digital instrument cluster is programmed to show hybrid-specific powertrain information. The rugged and handsome interior is comfortable and is made of materials that should prove durable. Crosstrek Sport Hybrids get cloth upholstery, while Limited Hybrids wear gray StarTex faux-leather upholstery with orange stitching. There’s room for four adults in the Crosstrek Hybrid (there’s a fifth seatbelt for a middle passenger in the back seat). There’s 18.6 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seat, which is down slightly compared with the standard Crosstrek due to the location of the hybrid’s battery pack.
Technology
In addition to the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, all 2027 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid models come with an 11.6-inch touchscreen that’s mounted vertically in the center of the dashboard. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support are standard, as is TomTom-based voice-activated navigation. A six-speaker audio system is standard in the Sport Hybrid, while Limited Hybrid models get a 10-speaker Harman Kardon audio system.
