Is the 2016 Nissan Maxima a good car?

Yes — the 2016 Nissan Maxima earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Technology at 9/10.

That lines up with the overview’s focus on a car whose appeal starts with its looks but extends to everyday livability and a more upscale feel. With 26.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2016 Nissan Maxima reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

User feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience for many drivers, even though some reviews mention reliability issues. The expert evaluation also says Maxima buyers can likely rely on dependability, with quality and reliability having impressed owners for the past decade. The first scheduled maintenance visit is on the house, which helps early ownership costs.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that newer technology and prior-owner maintenance history can affect how well a specific car holds up.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Nissan Maxima?

At 46.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in a collision or shows uneven wear. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and how well the safety and tech features work in real-world use. Because this model’s appeal depends heavily on how it was treated, a clean, well-kept example is worth more than a cheaper one with unknown history.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Maxima S starts the range, while the SV adds leather, heated front seats and side mirrors, front and rear parking sensors, and an 8-way power driver’s seat with thigh support extension. The SL adds predictive forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, a dual-panel sunroof, premium audio, active noise cancellation, ambient cabin lighting, and a heated steering wheel. The SR is the sportier choice with paddle shifters, a sport suspension, a front performance chassis damper, 19-inch wheels, and an Integrated Dynamics Module. The Platinum sits above that with the drowsy-driver detection system. The best-value trim is the SL if you want the strongest mix of comfort and safety equipment.
• Powertrain: The 3.5-liter V6 makes 300 horsepower and is paired with a continuously variable transmission that uses dynamic step shifting and an adaptive shift controller. The car is front-drive, and the available Drive Mode Selector adds Normal and Sport settings.
• Safety package: NissanConnect Services includes speed, curfew, and boundary alerts, remote engine start, remote access to the locks, lights, and horn, automatic collision notification and emergency calling, a stolen-vehicle locator, connected and assisted search, destination download capability, and Google Send to Car. Standard safety equipment also includes a reversing camera and Easy Fill Tire Alert. The SL adds blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, a 360-degree monitoring system, and predictive forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking. Lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist are not offered, and drowsy-driver detection is reserved for the Platinum.
• Infotainment: NissanConnect is standard across the range and includes navigation, NissanConnect Services, and a hands-free text-messaging assistant. The system also supports remote and connected features through the car’s tech suite.
• Fuel efficiency: The EPA estimates are 22 mpg city, 30 mpg highway, and 25 mpg combined. In testing, the car averaged 21.8 mpg.

Which 2016 Nissan Maxima trim should I buy?

The 2016 Nissan Maxima is offered in 5 trim levels: S, SV, SL, SR, Platinum.

Here's the short version:

• S: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the Maxima’s styling and core powertrain at the lowest price.
• SV: This trim adds a more comfortable and convenient setup with leather, heated front seats and side mirrors, parking sensors, and a power driver’s seat, making it a sensible step up for everyday use.
• SL: This is the best-value trim because it adds the most important safety and comfort upgrades, including predictive forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, a dual-panel sunroof, premium audio, and a heated steering wheel.
• SR: Choose this if you want the sportiest version, with paddle shifters, a sport suspension, a front performance chassis damper, 19-inch wheels, and the Integrated Dynamics Module.
• Platinum: This is the top trim if you want the most complete feature set, including the drowsy-driver detection system.

The SL is the trim that best balances equipment and value, while the Platinum adds the most advanced safety feature in the lineup.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Nissan Maxima?

This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 26.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 630 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.21% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 46.7% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $11,715, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Nissan Maxima's resale value?

The current average of $11,715 sits slightly below last year's $12,626.

That price movement suggests the market has softened, which can make the car easier to buy now but may also limit upside for a future seller. If you own one, condition and history matter a lot because cleaner examples should be easier to move than cars with accident records or neglected maintenance. The Maxima’s strong owner satisfaction helps support demand, but resale will still depend heavily on how well your specific car presents.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Nissan Maxima safe?

The 2016 Nissan Maxima earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

NissanConnect Services adds a useful safety layer with automatic collision notification and emergency calling, a stolen-vehicle locator, and remote access features. Standard safety equipment includes a reversing camera and Easy Fill Tire Alert, while the SL trim adds blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, a 360-degree monitoring system, and predictive forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking. Lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist are not offered, and drowsy-driver detection is reserved for the Platinum.

Should I buy a 2016 Nissan Maxima or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 26.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 46.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.21% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The expert review says the Maxima’s success or failure depends heavily on styling, and that if you like the way it looks, you’re likely to like the rest of the car.

The bottom line: The 2016 Maxima makes sense if you want a stylish sedan with strong owner satisfaction and a lower used price than newer alternatives. If you’re more price-sensitive, you should still compare carefully, but the 2016 can be a smart buy when you find a clean, well-kept example with the right trim and history.

How does the 2016 Nissan Maxima compare to the 2016 Toyota Avalon?

Our experts score the 2016 Nissan Maxima 7/10 and the 2016 Toyota Avalon 7.5/10.

The Maxima is the more affordable used buy here, with a lower average price and more listings to choose from. The Avalon brings a slightly higher expert score, a bit more highway efficiency, and a higher share of accident-free listings and good-or-great deals. If you want the stronger value proposition and a more distinctive design, the Maxima has the edge; if you want the slightly better-rated alternative, the Avalon is the safer comparison point.
