Why it stands out
The 2016 Kia Soul stands out because it blends quirky styling with everyday usefulness. Kia’s buying guide describes the Soul as a subcompact hatchback with a boxy, distinctive personality, and it also notes that the model helped shift Kia’s image toward something more appealing while still value-conscious. For shoppers, that combination is a big part of the appeal: the Soul is meant to be practical, affordable, and different without going as far into oddball territory as some of the vehicles it was compared with.
For 2016, the Soul’s second-generation updates gave it a more polished feel than the original. The chassis was slightly longer, wider, and stiffer, and Kia said the cabin would be quieter, the ride and handling better, and the interior more upscale. It also offered useful space, including 24.2 cubic feet of cargo room, and the trim lineup brought a wide spread of equipment, from Bluetooth and SiriusXM satellite radio on base trims to an 8-inch touchscreen, navigation, an Infinity sound system, a panoramic sunroof, and heated rear seats on higher trims. The 1.6-liter engine made 130 hp and 118 lb-ft of torque, while upper trims used a 2.0-liter inline-four with 164 hp and 151 lb-ft of torque.
At the same time, the 2016 Soul was not without compromises. The buying guide notes that earlier models were slow, and the second-generation section says Kia downgraded some equipment for this year, including removing the backup camera and automatic headlights from the base trim and making them part of a new option package. Even so, the 2016 Soul remains appealing because it delivers a lot of personality, a roomy cabin, and a strong value proposition in a small, easy-to-live-with package.

Most uncomfortable seats in the world, do a long test drive

Reviewed a 2016 Kia Soul on Apr 29, 2022
This model year is perfect for me, as I really wanted to retain the hatchback quality, while getting a slightly larger interior than my old Toyota Matrix. It feels so much larger inside, much more rommy for a tiny female, but even my brother, who is very broad shouldered feels comfortable. This 2016model DOES NOT have a screen, which I like (the 2017s do). The two front seats are comfortable and there are4 cup holders in the front of the car, which are a PAIN when there are not enough. The radio, cruise control, hands free talking on my phone are all on the steering wheel, two 12v, aux and USB plugins in the dash/radio area plus the Bluetooth capability make more opportunities for hands free answering/listening. The boot is not large and a tray can be lifted out to access the factory tire repair kit and there is NO SPARE. The interior is two toned cloth on this model, but I wouldnt have it any other way! I think this car is a good value in comparison to say a Hyundai sonata. The size is very similar, but its just short and has a little bit more interior personality. I also looked at a Kia Sorento, and I did not like it nearly as much as I like the Soul. The only thing that I would want in a car going forward, is, some sort of screen that pulls away from the back two seats towards the opening of the hatchback, just to cover up what things you have in the trunk however it was pointed out to me and Im learning to be okay with the fact that the back windows are tinted so dark that it is nearly impossible to see the contents of what you have in the boot of the car. Overall, Im really excited about owning this car! Its really a fairly compact car fits in small car spaces, its very roomy on the inside and has enough power to do the job I need it to do. Drive around town and occasionally take me out of town.

Is the 2016 Kia Soul a good car?
Yes — the 2016 Kia Soul earns a 4.65/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise its spacious interior, great gas mileage, and solid performance, and they also like its comfort, handling, and affordability. For you, that makes it a smart fit if you want a practical small hatchback with personality and everyday usability. With 28.6% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Kia Soul reliable?
Owners rate it 4.65/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also emphasizes dependable day-to-day use, with praise for the car’s comfort, gas mileage, and solid performance. That kind of feedback suggests you can count on it for regular commuting and routine ownership, especially if you prioritize a well-kept example. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the model’s appeal and more about finding one that has been maintained well and not worn down by prior use.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Kia Soul?
At 55.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from cars with accident records. After that, put a pre-purchase inspection at the top of your list, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on overall condition, since the best buy is usually the one with the cleanest history and the fewest signs of wear.

What is the 2016 Kia Soul's resale value?
The current average of $8,531 sits slightly below last year's $9,044.
That softer pricing suggests the market has become a bit more favorable for buyers, but it also means a future seller may need to price carefully to stay competitive. If you buy well now and keep the car in strong condition, you can help protect your exit value later. The model’s broad appeal and practical layout should continue to support demand, especially among shoppers looking for something affordable and distinctive.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.65/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 Kia Soul or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 28.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 55.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.67% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.65/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $7,995, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $8,531 average.
- It offers strong value with a well-equipped, personality-filled package.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $9,208, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $8,531 average.
- It adds updated looks, an optional turbo engine, and newer technology.
The bottom line: The 2016 is the best all-around choice if you want a balanced mix of value, owner satisfaction, and current market flexibility. If your priority is saving money, the 2015 is the better price-first alternative. If you want newer features and are willing to pay more, the 2017 is the more upscale path.
