Why it stands out
The 2016 Kia Soul stands out because it blends quirky styling with real everyday usefulness. Kia’s buying guide describes the Soul as a subcompact hatchback with a boxy, practical ethos, and it also notes that the model helped shift Kia’s image toward something more appealing while still value-conscious. For shoppers, that combination is the core appeal: it is distinctive without being purely oddball, and it offers a lot of space inside for a small vehicle.
For 2016, the second-generation Soul kept the original formula and footprint but looked neater, with smoother sides and more balanced proportions that made it seem less like a tall hatchback and more like a scaled-down SUV. The same section says the chassis was slightly longer, wider, and stiffer, and that the tailgate opened 2.4 inches higher for easier cargo access, with 24.2 cubic feet of space. It also notes upgraded interior features and more soft-touch materials, which gave the cabin a more high-end feel. Standard equipment was fairly generous for the class, and the Plus trim gained features such as a backup camera and fog lights, while the Exclaim trim added a long list of comfort and convenience items.
There are a few tradeoffs to keep in mind. The guide says the 2016 Soul’s 1.6-liter inline-four made 130 hp and 118 lb-ft of torque, while the upper trims used a 2.0-liter inline-four with 164 hp and 151 lb-ft of torque. It also says Kia downgraded some specs on the Exclaim for 2016, including smaller wheels and halogen headlights, and that forward-collision and lane-departure warning systems were only newly optional. Even so, owner feedback lines up with the Soul’s strengths, especially its spacious interior, good gas mileage, comfort, handling, and affordability.

Most uncomfortable seats in the world, do a long test drive

Reviewed a 2016 Kia Soul on Apr 29, 2022
This model year is perfect for me, as I really wanted to retain the hatchback quality, while getting a slightly larger interior than my old Toyota Matrix. It feels so much larger inside, much more rommy for a tiny female, but even my brother, who is very broad shouldered feels comfortable. This 2016model DOES NOT have a screen, which I like (the 2017s do). The two front seats are comfortable and there are4 cup holders in the front of the car, which are a PAIN when there are not enough. The radio, cruise control, hands free talking on my phone are all on the steering wheel, two 12v, aux and USB plugins in the dash/radio area plus the Bluetooth capability make more opportunities for hands free answering/listening. The boot is not large and a tray can be lifted out to access the factory tire repair kit and there is NO SPARE. The interior is two toned cloth on this model, but I wouldnt have it any other way! I think this car is a good value in comparison to say a Hyundai sonata. The size is very similar, but its just short and has a little bit more interior personality. I also looked at a Kia Sorento, and I did not like it nearly as much as I like the Soul. The only thing that I would want in a car going forward, is, some sort of screen that pulls away from the back two seats towards the opening of the hatchback, just to cover up what things you have in the trunk however it was pointed out to me and Im learning to be okay with the fact that the back windows are tinted so dark that it is nearly impossible to see the contents of what you have in the boot of the car. Overall, Im really excited about owning this car! Its really a fairly compact car fits in small car spaces, its very roomy on the inside and has enough power to do the job I need it to do. Drive around town and occasionally take me out of town.

Is the 2016 Kia Soul a good car?
Yes — the 4.6/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise the spacious interior, great gas mileage, solid performance, comfort, handling, and affordability. That lines up well with the Soul’s use case as a practical, value-conscious small hatchback with a lot of room inside for everyday driving. With 29.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Kia Soul reliable?
Owners rate it 4.6/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also emphasizes dependable everyday traits like comfort, good gas mileage, and solid performance, which are the kinds of qualities used buyers tend to count on over time. For a used purchase, that suggests the bigger risk is less about the model’s basic appeal and more about finding one that has been maintained well and hasn’t been worn down by age or heavy use.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Kia Soul?
At 56% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection so you can catch hidden body, suspension, or repair issues. Focus closely on overall condition, since accident history and wear can matter more than mileage alone on a used small car. It also helps to compare multiple listings so you can separate clean examples from cars that are priced low for a reason.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Kia Soul?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find value.
- Deal availability: 29.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,176 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.73% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 56.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $8,272, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Kia Soul's resale value?
The current average of $8,274 sits slightly below last year's $8,967.
That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point. For a future seller, that also means resale value will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the car has been maintained. A clean history and strong presentation matter more when the broader market is already pricing the model lower than it was a year ago.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 Kia Soul or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 29.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 56% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.73% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $7,878, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $8,274 average.
- It emphasizes value and personality with broad everyday usefulness.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $8,849, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $8,274 average.
- It adds updated looks and new technology.
The bottom line: The 2016 is the best all-around pick if you want a strong mix of owner satisfaction, current market value, and decent deal availability. If your priority is spending less, the 2015 is the better budget path; if you want a newer-feeling setup and can pay more, the 2017 is the alternative to compare.
