CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Jeep Wrangler
overall

Summary
With 188 currently listed for sale near Chicago, IL and an average price of $17,397, 28.7% of 2016 Jeep Wranglers for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Jeep Wrangler 4.6 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.17 / 10.
56.4% of 2016 Wrangler models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Jeep Wrangler stands out because it blends traits that are hard to find together in one vehicle. It has a convertible top for summer, 4-wheel drive for winter and off-road use year round, and some of the most unique styling and consistently rugged standard equipment available in any new car today. That combination gives it a clear identity: it is built to be fun, capable, and unmistakably Jeep.
At the same time, the Wrangler’s appeal comes with tradeoffs. The test-drive data notes its poor road manners, and owners commonly describe it as noisy and bumpy on the road. Even so, many owners praise the fun driving experience, the comfortable interior, and the simplicity that can help keep repair costs lower. Gas mileage is a frequent complaint, and some owners wished for a rearview camera, but those drawbacks have not stopped the Wrangler from remaining a popular choice.

The car states it has several benefits such as heated seats, rear camera, led lights, and a wench, however, none of these things work on the vehicle. This could be because if after market add ons, but as of no hardly anything works correctly. We will have to put a lot of money into it to get it working, therefore the price was not a good value.

How much does the 2016 Jeep Wrangler cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $17,528 |
| Year-Round Low | $17,528 |
| Year-Round High | $19,131 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $19,129 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −8.37% |
Prices have softened 8.37% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 5,756 listings available, which suggests you have a solid amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2016 Jeep Wrangler a good car?
Yes — the 2016 Jeep Wrangler earns a 4.6/5 user rating and a 6.17/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Performance at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise the fun driving experience, the comfortable interior, and the impressive power, especially with the manual transmission. The Wrangler’s simplicity and lower repair costs also come through as recurring positives.
That fits the vehicle’s core use case well: you’re buying it for open-air fun, year-round 4-wheel-drive capability, and a distinctive personality rather than everyday refinement. It also remains a popular choice for shoppers who want something unmistakably Jeep.
Good and great deals account for 31.5% of listings, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Jeep Wrangler reliable?
Owners rate it 4.6/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owners also describe it as simple and note lower repair costs, while the broader feedback points to a vehicle that many people count on for its rugged character. The expert test-drive notes reinforce that dependability by emphasizing the Wrangler’s purpose-built capability and strong fanbase.
The cost-effectiveness notes also point to a straightforward ownership experience, with the Wrangler’s low-tech setup helping preserve its charm. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that condition can vary widely depending on how hard a previous owner used it.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Jeep Wrangler?
At 65.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a hands-on inspection of body condition, underbody wear, and signs of hard use. Because this model is often bought for capability and customization, it’s especially important to check whether the vehicle has been modified, repaired, or used off road.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Sport trim comes with manual windows and door locks, air conditioning, 16-inch steel wheels, and cloth seats, while the Sport S adds power locks and windows, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, and 17-inch aluminum wheels. The Sahara adds bright interior accents, automatic headlights, color-keyed fender flares, and 18-inch polished wheels, while the Rubicon adds BF Goodrich off-road tires and an electronically disconnecting front sway bar.
- Powertrain: Every version uses a 3.6-liter V6 with 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, paired with either a 6-speed manual or 5-speed automatic transmission and standard 4-wheel drive. The setup is built for trail use, though the road manners are described as ungainly.
- Safety package: Every Wrangler Unlimited includes multistage airbags, electronic stability control, electronic roll mitigation, and ultra-strong roll bars. It lacks lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, forward-collision avoidance, and even a backup camera.
- Infotainment: The base radio includes a CD player, MP3 capability, and a front auxiliary audio jack. A 6.5-inch touchscreen adds GPS-based navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, and front-facing aux audio and USB capabilities.
- Fuel efficiency: Fuel economy is estimated at 16 mpg city, 21 highway, and 18 combined with the manual transmission, while the automatic returns 16 mpg city, 20 highway, and 18 combined.
Which 2016 Jeep Wrangler trim should I buy?
The 2016 Jeep Wrangler is offered in 4 trim levels: Sport, Sport S, Sahara, and Rubicon.
Here's the short version:
- Sport: This is the entry point, and it gives you the Wrangler basics with manual windows and locks, cloth seats, air conditioning, and steel wheels. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the model and do not need extra convenience features.
- Sport S: This adds the most useful everyday upgrades, including power windows and locks, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, and aluminum wheels. It looks like the best-value trim if you want a better daily experience without jumping too far up the price ladder.
- Sahara: This trim leans more toward comfort and appearance, with bright interior accents, automatic headlights, color-keyed fender flares, Sirius satellite radio, and polished wheels. It suits you if you want a more polished Wrangler without going all the way to the off-road-focused model.
- Rubicon: This is the trail-oriented choice, with BF Goodrich off-road tires, an electronically disconnecting front sway bar, and the most capable hardware in the lineup. Choose it if off-road performance matters most.
The safety content also notes that the Wrangler lacks several high-tech driver-assistance features, including lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, forward-collision avoidance, and a backup camera.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Jeep Wrangler?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 31.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 5,756 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.37% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 65.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $17,528, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Jeep Wrangler's resale value?
The current average of $17,528 sits slightly below last year's $19,129.
That decline suggests the market has become more favorable for buyers, but it also means a future seller may need to price competitively to stand out. If you buy well now and keep the vehicle in strong condition, you may be better positioned when it comes time to resell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Jeep Wrangler safe?
The 2016 Jeep Wrangler earns a 3/10 safety score from our experts.
It includes multistage airbags, electronic stability control, electronic roll mitigation, ultra-strong roll bars, and trailer sway control. However, it lacks lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, forward-collision avoidance, and even a backup camera.
That means you should view safety as a tradeoff with this model year: it has basic protective hardware and strong braking, but it does not offer the modern driver-assistance coverage many shoppers expect.
Should I buy a 2016 Jeep Wrangler or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 31.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 65.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.37% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The expert summary highlights its convertible top, year-round 4-wheel drive, and unmistakably rugged identity.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $16,570, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $17,528 average.
- It stays true to its rugged identity while adding an upgraded sound system.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of current pricing, inventory, and owner satisfaction, the 2016 is the better starting point. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2015 is the more budget-friendly alternative, especially if you value the Wrangler formula over newer-year pricing.
