How much does the 2016 Jeep Wrangler cost?

Prices have softened 8.06% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 5,870 listings available, which suggests you have a healthy amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2016 Jeep Wrangler a good car?

Yes — the 2016 Jeep Wrangler earns a 4.6/5 user rating and a 6.2/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Performance at 9/10. Owners repeatedly praise its fun driving experience, comfortable interior, and impressive power, while also valuing its simplicity and lower repair costs. For you, that means this is a strong fit if you want a distinctive, go-anywhere vehicle with year-round 4-wheel-drive capability and a convertible top, even if everyday refinement is not the priority. 33.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there is some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2016 Jeep Wrangler reliable?

Owners rate it 4.6/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. The owner feedback also points to a vehicle that feels dependable in the ways Wrangler shoppers care about most, with praise for its simplicity, lower repair costs, and trouble-free ownership experience. The expert evaluation reinforces that long-term appeal by emphasizing the Wrangler’s rugged standard equipment and purpose-built character. If you buy used, your biggest ownership risk is less about the concept and more about finding a well-kept example that has not been abused off road or neglected on maintenance.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Jeep Wrangler?

At 65.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a thorough inspection of the body, undercarriage, and any signs of hard use. Because this model is often bought for capability and customization, condition matters as much as mileage. Pay close attention to how complete and original the truck feels, especially if you want to avoid surprises after purchase.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Sport trim comes with manual windows and door locks, air conditioning, 16-inch steel wheels, and cloth seats, while the Sport S adds power locks and windows, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, and 17-inch aluminum wheels. The Sahara adds bright interior accents, automatic headlights, a 1-year Sirius satellite radio subscription, 18-inch polished wheels, and color-keyed fender flares. The Rubicon is the most trail-focused version, with BF Goodrich off-road tires and an electronically disconnecting front sway bar.
• Powertrain: Every version uses a 3.6-liter V6 with 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, paired with either a 6-speed manual or 5-speed automatic transmission and standard 4-wheel drive. The standard setup is Command-Trac, while the Rubicon gets Rock-Trac with a 4:1 rock crawling ratio.
• Safety package: Standard safety equipment includes multistage airbags, electronic stability control, electronic roll mitigation, and ultra-strong roll bars. The model lacks lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, forward-collision avoidance, and even a backup camera.
• Infotainment: The base setup includes the Radio 130 with a CD player, MP3 capability, and a front auxiliary audio jack. Higher setups add satellite radio, and the available Uconnect screen brings Bluetooth connectivity, GPS-based navigation, and front-facing aux audio and USB capabilities. The touchscreen measures 6.5 inches.
• Fuel efficiency: Fuel economy is estimated at 16 mpg city and 21 highway with the manual transmission, or 20 highway with the automatic.

Which 2016 Jeep Wrangler trim should I buy?

The 2016 Jeep Wrangler is offered in 4 trim levels: Sport, Sport S, Sahara, and Rubicon.

Here's the short version:

• Sport: This is the entry point, and it gives you the Wrangler basics at the lowest cost, including manual windows and door locks, air conditioning, steel wheels, and cloth seats. It makes sense if you want the core Wrangler experience and do not need convenience upgrades.
• Sport S: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the convenience features most people notice every day, including power windows and locks, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, and aluminum wheels.
• Sahara: This trim leans more toward comfort and appearance, with bright interior accents, automatic headlights, color-keyed fender flares, and satellite radio. It suits you if you want a more polished Wrangler without jumping to the trail-focused Rubicon.
• Rubicon: This is the most capable off-road trim, with BF Goodrich off-road tires, an electronically disconnecting front sway bar, and Rock-Trac 4-wheel drive with a 4:1 crawl ratio. Choose it if trail use matters most.

The Rubicon is the off-road standout, while the Sahara is the more upscale choice.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Jeep Wrangler?

The market looks selective rather than overheated, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay patient.

• Deal availability: 33.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 5,870 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.06% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 65.8% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $17,090, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Jeep Wrangler's resale value?

The current average of $17,090 sits slightly below last year's $18,589.

That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point. For a future seller, it also means resale value may depend heavily on condition, trim, and how well the vehicle has been maintained. Wranglers with desirable equipment and clean histories should remain easier to move than rougher examples, especially because buyer interest stays strong for this model.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Jeep Wrangler safe?

The 2016 Jeep Wrangler lacks high-tech safety features like lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and forward-collision avoidance.

It earns a 3/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes multistage airbags, electronic stability control, electronic roll mitigation, and ultra-strong roll bars. It also offers trailer sway control and strong braking capabilities. The main caveat for you is that this is a low-tech vehicle by modern standards, so you should not expect the driver-assistance coverage found in newer SUVs.

Should I buy a 2016 Jeep Wrangler or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 33.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 65.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.06% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 stands out for its convertible top, standard 4-wheel drive, and rugged standard equipment.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $16,145, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $17,090 average.
• It stays true to its rugged identity while adding a few updates.

The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of current-year pricing, inventory, and owner satisfaction, the 2016 is the better starting point. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2015 is worth a look, especially if you find one in cleaner condition.

How does the 2016 Jeep Wrangler compare to the 2016 Toyota 4Runner?

Our experts score the 2016 Jeep Wrangler 6.2/10 and the 2016 Toyota 4Runner 7.2/10. The Wrangler is the more affordable choice by a wide margin and offers more listings to shop, while the 4Runner brings a higher expert score and stronger overall used-market positioning. If you want the most distinctive open-air off-road personality, the Wrangler is the better fit; if you want a more expensive but better-rated SUV, the 4Runner has the edge.
