How much does the 2016 Jeep Compass cost?

Prices have softened 4.99% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 960 listings available, which gives you a decent amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2016 Jeep Compass a good car?

The 2016 Jeep Compass is a mixed but value-oriented choice, with a 3.8/5 user rating and a 6.5/10 expert rating.

The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 8/10.

Owners repeatedly point to its roomy interior, comfort, good fuel economy, and overall value. That lines up with the Compass’s role as a budget-friendly small crossover that still delivers car-like driving manners, wagon-like cargo space, and a higher seating position. It’s best suited to you if you want inexpensive Jeep branding and practical everyday use more than modern polish.

Only 28.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so the market still rewards careful shopping.

Is the 2016 Jeep Compass reliable?

The 2016 Jeep Compass is best viewed as a used buy where condition matters more than reputation alone.

Owners describe it as a great value with good fuel economy, roomy interior space, and comfort, and those are the kinds of traits that can make a vehicle feel dependable in daily use. At the same time, some drivers report engine and transmission problems from certain dealerships, so you should treat service history and current mechanical condition as especially important. The expert evaluation also notes that the Compass can still be competent despite its age, which supports the idea that a well-kept example can serve you reasonably well.

If you’re shopping used, the long-term ownership risk is tied to age, prior maintenance, and whether the drivetrain has been cared for consistently.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Jeep Compass?

At 59.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and how the drivetrain behaves on a test drive, since age and reported engine or transmission issues can matter more than mileage alone. If you’re comparing multiple examples, put the cleanest maintenance record and the most consistent condition at the top of your list.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Sport is effectively the base trim and comes with an auxiliary audio jack, tire pressure monitoring lamp, illuminated cupholders, and Bluetooth hands-free calling. The Sport SE adds heated leather seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and steering-wheel-mounted audio controls, while the 75th Anniversary Edition builds on the Sport with remote engine start and a power moonroof. The Latitude adds a 60/40 split/fold rear seat, rear 115-volt auxiliary power outlet, brightwork grille, and power foldaway heated side mirrors, and the High Altitude adds bright-side roof rails, 17-inch Granite painted wheels, and a 6-way power driver’s seat.
• Powertrain: The Compass offers a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder with 158 horsepower and 141 pound-feet of torque, or a 2.4-liter inline 4-cylinder with 172 hp and 165 lb-ft of torque. The smaller engine can be paired with a 5-speed manual or CVT, while the 2.4-liter also offers a 6-speed automatic on AWD models. The larger engine is the stronger choice, but it can sound coarse under hard acceleration.
• Safety package: The Compass comes standard with 6 multistage airbags for the driver and front passenger, second-row side curtain airbags, crumple protection, and side-impact door beams. Blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure warning, and forward-collision avoidance are not part of the standard setup, and the backup camera is available rather than standard.
• Infotainment: The Compass uses the dated Radio 430 Uconnect system with a touchscreen, Bluetooth streaming for hands-free calling, a USB port, and an auxiliary audio input jack. SiriusXM satellite radio is available, and an optional flip-down liftgate stereo system is offered on the Latitude trim.
• Fuel efficiency: The 2.4-liter AWD model with the 6-speed automatic is estimated at 20 mpg city, 26 highway, and 23 combined. The CVT with full-time AWD drops to 20 city, 23 highway, and 21 combined. The best performer is the 2.0-liter FWD model with the manual, at 23 city, 30 highway, and 26 combined.

Which 2016 Jeep Compass trim should I buy?

The 2016 Jeep Compass is offered in 4 trim levels: Sport, Sport SE, Latitude, High Altitude.

Here's the short version:

• Sport: This is the entry point, and it gives you the essentials at the lowest cost. It’s the trim to consider if you want the cheapest path into the Compass, but it’s also the most basic.
• Sport SE: This is the better-value pick if you want a more comfortable daily driver without moving too far up the price ladder. The heated leather seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and steering-wheel audio controls make it feel more complete.
• Latitude: This trim adds useful convenience features like the split-fold rear seat, rear power outlet, brightwork grille, and heated power-folding mirrors. It’s the one to target if you want a more rounded ownership experience.
• High Altitude: This is the most upscale-looking version, with bright-side roof rails, 17-inch Granite painted wheels, and a power driver’s seat. Choose it if appearance and extra comfort matter more than value.

The safety setup is basic across the lineup, and the backup camera remains available rather than standard.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Jeep Compass?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory to shop carefully and enough price softness to create opportunities.

• Deal availability: 28.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 960 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.99% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 59.7% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $7,883, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Jeep Compass's resale value?

The current average of $8,079 sits slightly below last year's $8,503.

That decline suggests the Compass has been losing value, which can work in your favor if you’re buying now. For a future seller, it means you should expect a modest resale ceiling unless your vehicle is especially clean, well maintained, and priced competitively. The year-round range also shows limited upside, so condition and documentation will matter a lot when it’s time to sell.

Is the 2016 Jeep Compass safe?

The 2016 Jeep Compass earns Good from IIHS for head restraints and seats, and it earns three-star ratings for frontal crashes and four-star ratings for rollovers from NHTSA.

It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.

The Compass comes standard with 6 multistage airbags for the driver and front passenger, second-row side curtain airbags, crumple protection, and side-impact door beams. However, it lacks the advanced driver-assistance features that are common on newer crossovers, and the backup camera is only available rather than standard. That means you should not expect modern active-safety coverage, especially on lower trims.

Should I buy a 2016 Jeep Compass or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 28.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 59.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.99% compared with last year.
• The 2016 keeps value front and center, with a competent but aging small-crossover formula.

Consider the 2017 if:

• At $11,155, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $8,079 average.
• It is an all-new Compass with more legitimate off-road capability.

The bottom line: If you want the lowest purchase price and are comfortable shopping carefully, the 2016 is the better value play. If you’d rather pay more for a newer redesign with stronger capability, the 2017 is the smarter upgrade.
