Is the 2016 Jeep Cherokee a good car?

Generally — 4.12/5 from owners and 7.83/10 from our experts point to a model that lands in the solidly favorable range. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Technology.

Drivers repeatedly praise its sporty feel, comfortable interior, and convenient size, and they also call out the heated seats and heated steering wheel as especially appealing features. The overview also frames it as a versatile SUV that can handle rough pavement, highway driving, and more adventurous use without feeling compromised.

That combination makes the Cherokee especially appealing if you want a compact SUV with a clear personality and a broad use case. 30.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which suggests there are still worthwhile opportunities in the market.

Is the 2016 Jeep Cherokee reliable?

Owners rate it 4.12/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction. The user feedback also points to a dependable-feeling ownership experience for many drivers, with praise centered on the Cherokee’s comfortable, practical day-to-day use and its ability to serve as a versatile long-term vehicle.

At the same time, the owner summary flags concerns about build quality and engine and transmission reliability, so you should treat this as a used SUV where condition and maintenance history matter. The expert commentary also notes unfavorable reliability predictions tied mainly to the 9-speed automatic’s behavior, so a careful test drive and service-record review are especially important if you want to reduce long-term ownership risk.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Jeep Cherokee?

At 61.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing has any accident or repair history. Focus on body condition, panel alignment, and signs of prior structural or cosmetic repair, then make sure the drivetrain and transmission behave cleanly on a thorough test drive.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Trailhawk is the rugged, “Trail Rated” version of the Cherokee, while other variants include the base Sport, popular Latitude, and upscale Limited. The Trailhawk stands apart with its off-road-focused hardware and styling, while the other trims are positioned more for everyday use and comfort.
• Powertrain: Standard equipment includes a 184-horsepower, 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine, but the optional 271-horsepower, 3.2-liter V6 is the stronger choice. The V6 is described as the more efficient highway engine in the Trailhawk and matches the 4-cylinder’s 22-mpg combined rating.
• Safety package: The Cherokee includes a standard Park View reversing camera, and available safety tech includes blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking. The Trailhawk can also be upgraded with additional driver-assistance features.
• Infotainment: The Trailhawk uses a Uconnect 8.4 system with an 8.4-inch touchscreen, USB and SD card ports, Bluetooth calling and music streaming, Siri Eyes Free, Do Not Disturb, and Reply with Text Message features. Navigation is optional.
• Fuel efficiency: The V6 is rated at 22 mpg in combined driving, and the expert review notes that real-world results fell short of that estimate.

Which 2016 Jeep Cherokee trim should I buy?

The 2016 Jeep Cherokee is offered in 4 trim levels: Sport, Latitude, Limited, and Trailhawk.

Here's the short version:

• Sport: This is the entry point, and it gives you the Cherokee nameplate at the lowest price, but the review makes clear that the lineup’s real appeal grows as you move up to better-equipped versions.
• Latitude: This trim adds more everyday appeal and is the sensible step up if you want a better balance of features and value without chasing the most expensive version.
• Limited: This is the comfort-focused choice, with the upscale equipment that makes the Cherokee feel more polished for daily use.
• Trailhawk: This is the best fit if you want the Cherokee’s most distinctive character. It adds the rugged, Trail Rated setup, off-road hardware, and the strongest sense of purpose in the lineup, making it the standout choice for buyers who want capability first.

The Trailhawk also gets the most capable 4WD system and the off-road-focused safety and terrain features that separate it from the rest of the lineup.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Jeep Cherokee?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory and enough deal activity to make comparison shopping worthwhile.

• Deal availability: 30.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 2,424 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.60% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 61.9% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $10,365, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Jeep Cherokee's resale value?

The current average of $10,365 sits slightly below last year's $11,467.

That price movement suggests the Cherokee has already absorbed some of its near-term depreciation, which can help future resale stability if you buy at the right price. For a seller, that means your best outcome will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and service history rather than expecting the market to rebound quickly.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.12/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Jeep Cherokee safe?

The 2016 Jeep Cherokee earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA, and the IIHS gives it a Marginal rating in the small overlap frontal impact test while rating it Good in all other assessments and Superior for front crash prevention.

It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.

The Cherokee includes a standard Park View reversing camera, and available driver-assistance features include blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking. The expert review also flags the backup camera’s poor low-light clarity, which is a meaningful caveat if you care about parking visibility or frequent nighttime use.

Should I buy a 2016 Jeep Cherokee or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 30.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 61.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.60% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.12/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The expert review highlights the Trailhawk’s ability to handle both rough pavement and serious off-road use while still remaining comfortable on the road.

The bottom line: If you want the Cherokee’s strongest mix of capability, comfort, and value, the 2016 is a compelling used buy, especially if you find a clean example with a strong service record. If you’re shopping primarily on price, you can still find attractive deals in this market, but you should be especially selective about accident history and transmission behavior before you commit.
