CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Jeep Cherokee
overall

Summary
With 220 currently listed for sale near Akron, OH and an average price of $9,134, 18.2% of 2016 Jeep Cherokees for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Jeep Cherokee 4.12 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.83 / 10.
72.3% of 2016 Cherokee models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk stands out as a compact SUV that is equally at home on rough pavement and on the highway. It is described as shrugging off deteriorating city streets, tackling freeway ramps with enthusiasm, and going places most other SUVs can’t, which gives it a clear identity as the more adventurous choice in the lineup. It also aims to balance comfort and utility, making it appealing to buyers who want a vehicle that can handle a wide range of tasks without feeling compromised.
That versatility is part of its appeal: the Cherokee Trailhawk is presented as good to drive both on and off pavement, and it delivers impressive capability at a reasonable price. At the same time, owner feedback suggests the 2016 Jeep Cherokee also earns points for a sporty feel, a comfortable interior, and convenient size, with heated seats and a heated steering wheel among the features drivers especially liked. Some owners did raise concerns about build quality and engine and transmission reliability, along with wishing for extras such as navigation or a sunroof, so its strengths are balanced by a few practical reservations.

My husband and I absolutely enjoy this new car of ours. This is the vehicle we want and need. The features are perfect and everything works great, though we had to replace the brakes, spark plugs , and a few other things. The vehicle is in excellent condition and still looks new. The interior is beautiful. It’s the best vehicle for all of the driving that we do.

Is the 2016 Jeep Cherokee a good car?
Generally — the 2016 Jeep Cherokee earns a 4.12/5 user rating and a 7.83/10 expert rating, which points to a model that resonates with many shoppers even if it is not flawless. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Technology.
Drivers repeatedly praise its sporty feel, comfortable interior, and convenient size, along with the heated seats and heated steering wheel that make it feel well suited to daily use. The overview also frames it as a versatile SUV that can handle rough pavement, highway driving, and more adventurous use without feeling compromised. That combination makes it appealing if you want a compact SUV with a clear personality rather than a generic commuter.
There are 30.9% of listings priced as good or great deals, so you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Jeep Cherokee reliable?
Owners rate it 4.12/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction. User feedback also points to a dependable-feeling ownership experience for many drivers, with praise centered on its comfortable, practical, and easy-to-live-with nature.
At the same time, the expert review notes concerns tied to the 9-speed automatic transmission, and the ownership-cost commentary says reliability predictions are unfavorable largely because of that transmission and infotainment complaints. The expert also describes the Cherokee Trailhawk as a vehicle you can count on for a wide range of tasks, which helps balance the picture.
If you buy used, the main long-term risk is that transmission behavior and related ownership costs may be more of a concern than the overall satisfaction score suggests.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Jeep Cherokee?
At 61.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the vehicle’s equipment and wear match the seller’s description. Because this model has a reputation for transmission-related complaints, it is smart to pay close attention to how it drives and shifts during a test drive.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Trailhawk is the rugged version, with a more adventurous setup than the other trims. The lineup also includes the Sport, Latitude, and Limited, and the base trim is the one most likely to leave you wanting more equipment if you care about comfort and convenience features.
- Powertrain: The Cherokee offers a 184-horsepower, 2.4-liter 4-cylinder and an optional 271-horsepower, 3.2-liter V6. The V6 is the stronger choice, and in the Trailhawk it is described as the more efficient highway engine while matching the 4-cylinder’s combined rating.
- Safety package: The Cherokee includes a standard Park View reversing camera, and available driver-assistance features include blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking. Some of these features are optional rather than standard.
- Infotainment: The Trailhawk comes with a Uconnect 8.4 system featuring an 8.4-inch touchscreen, USB and SD card ports, Bluetooth calling and music streaming, Siri Eyes Free, Do Not Disturb, and Reply with Text Message. Navigation is optional.
- Fuel efficiency: The Trailhawk’s V6 is rated at 22 mpg in combined driving, and the review says real-world results fell short of that estimate.
Which 2016 Jeep Cherokee trim should I buy?
The 2016 Jeep Cherokee is offered in 4 trim levels: Sport, Latitude, Limited, Trailhawk.
Here's the short version:
- Sport: This is the entry point, so it makes sense only if you want the lowest-cost way into the Cherokee nameplate and are comfortable giving up the richer feature content found higher up the range.
- Latitude: This is the trim that adds more everyday appeal and is the better value if you want a more complete Cherokee without jumping all the way to the top. It is the trim most shoppers should start with if they want a balanced mix of equipment and price.
- Limited: This is the more comfort-focused choice, with the kind of upscale equipment that makes the Cherokee feel more polished for daily driving.
- Trailhawk: This is the one to buy if you want the Cherokee’s most distinctive character. It is the rugged, trail-ready version with the most capability-focused hardware, and it is the best fit if you care about off-pavement use more than pure commuting comfort.
The safety package includes a standard Park View reversing camera, while additional driver-assistance features are available on some trims or as options.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Jeep Cherokee?
This is a moderate, selective-buyer market, so you can shop carefully without feeling rushed.
- Deal availability: 30.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,399 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.22% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 61.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $10,555, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Jeep Cherokee's resale value?
The current average of $10,556 sits slightly below last year's $11,502.
That softer pricing suggests the model has already absorbed some of its depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price today. If you purchase near the lower end of the range, you may have a better chance of limiting your loss when it comes time to sell. The key is to avoid overpaying now, because resale value is easier to preserve when your entry price is already discounted.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.12/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Jeep Cherokee safe?
The 2016 Jeep Cherokee earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA and a Marginal rating from IIHS in the small overlap frontal impact test, while IIHS gives it Good ratings in all other assessments and a Superior rating for front crash prevention.
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
The Cherokee comes with a standard Park View reversing camera, and available safety tech includes blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking. The camera is criticized for poor low-light clarity, so that is worth checking during a test drive if you often park in dim conditions.
Should I buy a 2016 Jeep Cherokee or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 30.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 61.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.22% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.12/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2016 stands out for its versatile Trailhawk identity, with comfort, utility, and genuine off-pavement capability in one package.
The bottom line: The 2016 is the better pick if you want this Cherokee’s distinctive mix of comfort and trail-ready character at a softened price. If you are mainly shopping on value, the current market gives you enough inventory and enough deal activity to be selective, but you should still prioritize condition and history over the cheapest sticker.
