Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Ford Mustang 4.85 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.5 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2016 Ford Mustang stands out because Ford chose not to treat it as a simple carryover after the car’s 50th anniversary year. Instead, it brought back some old favorites and added new surprises to keep the pony car feeling fresh. Among the notable updates were hood-mounted turn signals that first appeared in ’67, along with new Black Accent and California Special packages.
It also gained the Sync 3 infotainment system just in time for the Mustang’s 51st birthday. Another meaningful change was that the GT Performance package finally became available for the convertible. Together, those updates give the 2016 Mustang a mix of heritage touches and modern convenience that helps it feel distinctive.
Owners also tend to praise the 2016 Ford Mustang for its fun and smooth ride, performance, handling, stylish design, and value compared with similar cars. Some drivers, however, noted missing features like Apple CarPlay, and fuel economy drew mixed reactions on certain models.

So beautiful, top up or down its a head- turner. Super comfortable to drive around town or on the highway, all good. Ford did a good job on the infotainment, plug and play to use Google maps. The sport mode really gets it while normal mode helps save gas. Best in class cargo means you can fit your stuff no problem. I have the 6 speed stick, notchy and fun all the time. The 4 cylinder turbo engine Ecoboost means the car is way lighter than the GT which makes this really easy to drive and nimble. The brakes are great. At 34,000 and have no issues, very reliable. I love this car. What a delight. They say things dont make your life better but this car proves otherwise!

The premium is the perfect mix of luxury meets sport. Plenty of options included adds lots of comfort. And this GT is fast with amazing handling and control. My wife can take it to the grocery store without being scared of it and I can drop it in sport mode and tear up the asphalt.

I have a very well equipped Ecoboost Premium. The car rides exceptionally well. The 4 cyl has plenty of power and pulls close to 30 MPG on the highway. The car is a joy to drive and is my 5th Mustang. Having owned some older generations, this is the best one yet. Lots of creature comforts in this model and a nice mix of retro and new.

| Year-Round High | $20,342 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $20,341 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −4.29% |

There are 1,802 listings available, which suggests you should have a workable selection to compare.
Is the 2016 Ford Mustang a good car?
Yes — the 2016 Ford Mustang earns a 4.85/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise its fun and smooth ride, performance, handling, stylish design, and value compared with similar cars. For you, that means this Mustang fits especially well if you want a sporty car that still feels approachable day to day. The overview also points to heritage touches and modern convenience, so you get a mix of classic Mustang character and newer tech.
With 30.9% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Ford Mustang reliable?
Owners rate it 4.85/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a car that many drivers enjoy for the long haul, with praise centered on its fun, smooth ride and overall value. The expert notes also frame it as a car that keeps the Mustang formula fresh without losing its core appeal, which supports the idea that it can be a satisfying ownership choice if you buy a well-kept example. Ford also includes a strong safety and convenience package on higher trims, which can make daily use feel more reassuring.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the model’s appeal and more about how the individual car was treated, especially if it has been modified or driven hard.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Ford Mustang?
At 55.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on cars with performance packages or visible modifications. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the car’s equipment matches the trim and options advertised. If you are comparing multiple listings, the cleanest example is often worth paying a bit more for.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base car comes with 17-inch alloys, automatic xenon headlights, LED taillights, keyless entry and ignition, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, and MyKey, while higher trims add features like power front seats, leather upholstery, heated and ventilated seats, ambient lighting, and Sync 3.
- Powertrain: You can shop V6, turbocharged 4-cylinder, and V8 versions, with the V8 delivering the strongest performance and the EcoBoost offering the best efficiency among the performance-oriented choices.
- Safety package: Premium Mustangs can add adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with cross-traffic alert, and forward-collision warning, while all Mustangs can add optional front and rear parking sensors.
- Infotainment: Sync 3 appears on the EcoBoost Premium, with an 8-inch touchscreen and a 9-speaker setup; the system is quicker than the old interface, but Apple CarPlay is not mentioned here.
- Fuel efficiency: The V6 is rated at 17 mpg city/28 highway/21 combined with the manual and 22 combined with the automatic, while the EcoBoost returns 22/31/26 with the manual or 21/32/25 with the automatic. The V8 is rated at 15/25/19.
Which 2016 Ford Mustang trim should I buy?
The 2016 Ford Mustang is offered in 5 trim levels: V6, EcoBoost, EcoBoost Premium, GT, GT Premium.
Here's the short version:
- V6: This is the most affordable way into the Mustang and still gives you a strong standard feature set, including the core convenience and lighting equipment. It makes sense if you want the Mustang look and feel without chasing extra performance or luxury features.
- EcoBoost: This is the best-value trim if you want more power and a more modern driving feel without jumping all the way to V8 pricing. It adds power front seats, unique wheels, a rear spoiler, LED fog lights, and can be paired with a Performance Package that meaningfully sharpens the car.
- EcoBoost Premium: This is the trim to target if you want the most balanced mix of tech and comfort. It adds Sync 3, leather, heated and ventilated seats, dual-zone climate control, and other upscale touches that make daily use easier.
- GT: Choose this if you want the V8 experience and are willing to give up some premium features to get it. It brings the bigger engine, bigger brakes, and available line-lock and launch control, making it the enthusiast’s pick.
- GT Premium: This is the most complete Mustang in the lineup and the best choice if you want V8 power without giving up the nicer cabin and convenience features. It is also the trim that supports the California Special package.
Premium Mustangs can also add adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with cross-traffic alert, and forward-collision warning.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Ford Mustang?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay patient.
- Deal availability: 30.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,802 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.29% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 55.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $18,414, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Ford Mustang's resale value?
The current average of $19,468 sits slightly below last year's $20,341.
That decline suggests the market has softened, which can work against you if you are planning to sell soon. If you buy now, you should expect depreciation to remain a factor, especially if the car has been modified. On the other hand, a cleaner, well-kept Mustang with desirable equipment should still be easier to move than a rougher example.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.85/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Ford Mustang safe?
The 2016 Ford Mustang earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA and a Good rating from IIHS.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard antilock brakes, traction and stability control, and a full suite of airbags help support that result. Premium Mustangs can add adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with cross-traffic alert, and forward-collision warning, while all Mustangs can add optional front and rear parking sensors. That gives you a solid safety foundation, especially if you choose a better-equipped trim.
Should I buy a 2016 Ford Mustang or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 30.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 55.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.29% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.85/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It adds hood-mounted turn signals, Black Accent and California Special packages, and Sync 3, which help it feel fresher than a simple carryover.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $20,141, the 2015 costs more than the current year's $19,468 average.
- It was a redesigned anniversary-year Mustang with a clear step forward in dynamics and technology.
The bottom line: If you want the better value and the fresher feature mix, the 2016 is the smarter default choice. If you are price-sensitive and find a cleaner 2015 with the right equipment, that earlier redesign still makes sense as a fallback.
