How much does the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu cost?

Prices have softened 3.49% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,397 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of options to compare.

Is the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu a good car?

Generally — the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu earns 4.3/5 from owners and 7.7/10 from our experts. The redesign gives you a more modern midsize sedan with a spacious interior, smoother everyday manners, and a stronger mix of tech and safety features than earlier Malibus. Owners commonly praise the smooth ride, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and fuel economy, while the overview points to a practical daily-driver setup with broad appeal. The standout strength is Technology at 9/10. With 25.4% of listings priced as good or great deals, the market still offers some attractive opportunities.

Is the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu reliable?

Owners rate it 4.3/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction. Review feedback points to a dependable-feeling car with a smooth ride and useful features, and it also highlights the Malibu as a solid choice for a secondary car. The expert evaluation reinforces that it’s a more convincing, better-equipped version of the nameplate, with efficiency and everyday usability working in its favor. If you’re buying used, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure you choose a well-kept example, since build-quality concerns can matter more as mileage climbs.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Chevrolet Malibu?

At 50.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a hands-on inspection of body panels, paint consistency, and signs of prior repair. Because the Malibu’s appeal depends heavily on its comfort, tech, and everyday usability, you’ll want to focus on how well the cabin, electronics, and drivetrain have held up. If a listing looks especially cheap, make sure the condition matches the price before you move forward.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base L trim keeps things simple with keyless entry and ignition, cloth upholstery, cruise control, air conditioning, and steel wheels, while the LS adds alloys, automatic headlights, 4G connectivity, MyLink, a rear-view camera, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The 1LT adds LED running lights, heated mirrors, a power driver’s seat, satellite radio, rear ventilation, and 17-inch alloys, so it’s the better value if you want a more complete everyday setup.
• Powertrain: The base 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder pairs with a 6-speed automatic and is tuned for efficiency and usable low-end punch, while the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder in higher trims brings much stronger acceleration with an 8-speed automatic.
• Safety package: Two Driver Confidence packages add automatic headlights, front and rear parking sensors, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure intervention, forward collision intervention, and a self-parking system. Some of those features are not standard on every trim.
• Infotainment: Lower trims use a 7-inch touchscreen, while the Premier trim upgrades to an 8-inch touchscreen with navigation, wireless smartphone charging, a Bose stereo, and additional USB ports. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are part of the Malibu’s tech story, along with 4G LTE Wi-Fi.
• Fuel efficiency: The base engine returns 27 mpg city/37 mpg highway/31 combined, while the 2.0-liter turbo is rated at 22/33/26.

Which 2016 Chevrolet Malibu trim should I buy?

The 2016 Chevrolet Malibu is offered in 5 trim levels: L, LS, 1LT, 2LT, Premier.

Here's the short version:

• L: This is the simplest way into the Malibu, with the core comfort and convenience basics, but it leaves out the tech and visual upgrades that make the car feel more modern.
• LS: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds alloys, automatic headlights, a rear-view camera, 4G connectivity, MyLink, and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto without jumping too far up the price ladder.
• 1LT: This trim is the sweet spot if you want a more upscale feel, thanks to LED lighting, heated mirrors, a power driver’s seat, satellite radio, rear ventilation, and 17-inch wheels.
• 2LT: Choose this if you want the stronger 2.0-liter turbo engine and the 8-speed automatic, plus larger wheels and dual exhaust tips.
• Premier: This is the most luxurious version, with leather, heated and ventilated front seats, memory settings, remote ignition, a heated steering wheel, 19-inch wheels, LED headlights, wireless charging, navigation, and a premium Bose audio system.

Safety-package features are available through the Driver Confidence packages, so check carefully for those options if they matter to you.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Chevrolet Malibu?

The market looks moderately favorable if you’re selective and willing to compare listings carefully.

• Deal availability: 25.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,397 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.49% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 50.8% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $9,500, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu's resale value?

The current average of $9,687 sits slightly below last year's $10,038.

That softer pricing suggests the Malibu has become more accessible for used buyers, but it also means sellers may need to stay realistic on asking price. If you’re planning to resell later, the current trend points to a market that rewards clean condition, strong equipment, and well-documented history more than just age alone. The redesign and improved feature set help support demand, but value retention still depends on how well your specific car presents.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.3/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu safe?

The 2016 Malibu earns five-star ratings overall from NHTSA, with a four-star rollover rating.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The Malibu’s safety equipment includes four-wheel antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, dual front knee airbags, front and rear side airbags, side curtain airbags, and OnStar with automatic crash notification, roadside assistance, and stolen-vehicle assistance and recovery. It also offers driver-assistance tech through the Driver Confidence packages, including automatic headlights, parking sensors, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure intervention, forward collision intervention, and self-parking. The main caveat is that some of the most useful active-safety features are package-dependent rather than standard across the lineup.

Should I buy a 2016 Chevrolet Malibu or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 25.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 50.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.49% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.3/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The redesign brings a more modern cabin, stronger tech, and better safety features than the older Malibu.

Consider the 2017 if:

• At $10,652, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $9,687 average.
• It builds on the redesign with a more refined family-sedan feel and familiar smartphone tech.

The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2016 is the smarter starting point because it delivers the redesigned Malibu at a lower average price. If you’re willing to spend more for a slightly newer example, the 2017 is the cleaner follow-up path for shoppers who want to stay within the same formula.

How does the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu compare to the 2016 Toyota Camry?

Our experts score the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu 7.7/10 and the 2016 Toyota Camry 7.2/10. The Malibu gives you a lower average used price, stronger tech, and better fuel economy in the city and on the highway. The Camry counters with a more powerful base engine, a higher starting MSRP when new, and a larger used-market footprint. If you want the better value and more modern features, the Malibu is the sharper pick; if you want a more traditional midsize sedan with stronger base output, the Camry still makes sense.
