Why it stands out
The 2016 Acura TLX is distinctive because Acura positions it as a performance luxury sedan, aiming to blend driving appeal with upscale character. That promise gives it a clear identity: it is meant to be more than just a comfortable sedan, and the brand’s own description suggests that attention to detail is what would allow it to fully deliver on both sides of that mission.
What also sets the 2016 TLX apart is the broader context around Acura itself. The summary frames the brand as trying to recover its heritage and sense of purpose, with leadership changes and a new design direction presented as hopeful first steps. In that light, the TLX becomes part of a larger effort to rebuild passion and pride among both longtime Acura loyalists and new buyers, which gives it significance beyond its basic role as a luxury sedan.

I absolutely love this car. The best driving car I have ever had. I only wish there was a place to put a trash bag. I’m used to having a gear shift to hang it from. Other then that awesome ride!!!

A very easy car to drive. Solid quality after 57k miles... The weakness of this car is the transmission. As with many other vehicles with a high number of gears for their automatic transmissions. Other than that, a near perfect car.

32.0% of listings are marked as good or great deals, so you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Acura TLX reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The TLX is presented as a refined luxury sedan with a comfortable interior and a premium feel, but the expert commentary also points to some compromises in execution. The performance notes describe a smooth and powerful V6 setup, yet they also flag brake fade under hard use, which matters if you drive aggressively or in demanding conditions.
The cost-effectiveness commentary also reinforces that the TLX is meant to deliver luxury value, but it suggests the car falls short of fully matching its performance ambitions. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that a well-equipped example may feel more impressive on paper than it does in sustained hard driving.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Acura TLX?
At 50.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you are considering a higher-mileage or heavily optioned example. Pay close attention to body condition, brake condition, and signs of prior repair quality, since accident history and wear can affect both value and ownership confidence.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The TLX is described as a value-priced sedan with a 4-cylinder or V6 engine, and the available SH-AWD version adds a more upscale and performance-oriented character. Base-level equipment is more modest, while higher-spec versions bring a richer cabin and more capability.
- Powertrain: You can choose between a 4-cylinder or V6 setup, and the V6 SH-AWD version is described as especially strong when paired with torque-vectoring and the 9-speed automatic. The expert notes also mention that the car feels softer in everyday driving than its performance branding suggests.
- Safety package: The TLX includes a sophisticated driver-assistance and collision-avoidance setup, but the safety content also notes a Marginal result for small-overlap frontal protection and a Marginal result for LATCH ease of use.
- Infotainment: The TLX does not offer Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, but it does include a dual-screen setup, Bluetooth, Aha and Pandora internet radio, Siri Eyes Free, text and email reading, and optional navigation with AcuraLink services.
- Fuel efficiency: The expert notes cite 25 mpg for the tested V6 setup, with a real-world test result of 22.8 mpg.
Which 2016 Acura TLX trim should I buy?
The 2016 Acura TLX is offered in 2 trim levels: TLX 2.4, TLX 3.5 SH-AWD.
Here's the short version:
- TLX 2.4: This is the more affordable entry point and the best fit if you want the TLX’s upscale feel without paying for the V6 and SH-AWD hardware. It keeps the car’s value-focused mission intact and is the trim to target if you care most about price and everyday comfort.
- TLX 3.5 SH-AWD: This is the better choice if you want the strongest performance character in the lineup. The V6, torque-vectoring SH-AWD, and Agile Handling Assist make it the most engaging version, and it is the trim that best matches Acura’s performance-luxury pitch.
The safety content also notes a Marginal result for small-overlap frontal protection and a Marginal result for LATCH ease of use, so inspect any candidate carefully.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Acura TLX?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay patient.
- Deal availability: 32.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 578 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 50.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $14,030, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Acura TLX's resale value?
The current average of $14,645 sits slightly above last year's $14,574.
That small increase suggests the TLX has held its value fairly steadily rather than swinging sharply in either direction. For a future seller, that kind of pricing stability can help you plan your exit more confidently, especially if you buy at the right point in the range.
The market also appears balanced enough that condition and equipment will matter a lot when you resell. A clean, well-kept example should be easier to position than one with accident history or visible wear.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Acura TLX safe?
The 2016 Acura TLX earns five-star ratings across the board from NHTSA, but it also receives a Marginal IIHS rating for small-overlap frontal protection.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
The TLX’s safety content points to a sophisticated driver-assistance and collision-avoidance setup, but it also highlights a meaningful weakness in small-overlap frontal crash protection. The same safety commentary notes a Marginal result for LATCH ease of use, which is worth keeping in mind if you plan to install child seats.
Should I buy a 2016 Acura TLX or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 32.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 50.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The expert summary frames Acura’s redesign effort as a hopeful step toward restoring the brand’s identity.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $13,582, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $14,645 average.
- It is a likable near-luxury sedan with rewarding driving dynamics and a long list of modern entertainment and safety technologies.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger current-market balance of price stability, inventory, and owner satisfaction, the 2016 is the cleaner pick. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2015 is the better value-oriented alternative, especially if you find one in strong condition.
