Why it stands out
The 2016 Acura TLX is distinctive because Acura positions it as a performance luxury sedan, aiming to blend driving appeal with upscale character. That promise gives it a clear identity: it is meant to be more than just a comfortable sedan, and the brand’s own description suggests that attention to detail is what would allow it to fully deliver on both sides of that mission.
What also sets the 2016 TLX apart is the broader context around Acura itself. The summary frames the brand as trying to recover its heritage and sense of purpose, with leadership changes and a new design direction presented as hopeful first steps. In that light, the TLX becomes part of a larger effort to rebuild passion and pride among both longtime Acura loyalists and new buyers, which gives it significance beyond its basic role as a luxury sedan.

I absolutely love this car. The best driving car I have ever had. I only wish there was a place to put a trash bag. I’m used to having a gear shift to hang it from. Other then that awesome ride!!!

A very easy car to drive. Solid quality after 57k miles... The weakness of this car is the transmission. As with many other vehicles with a high number of gears for their automatic transmissions. Other than that, a near perfect car.

Yes — the 5/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction, and the expert rating is 6.5/10. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 9/10.
The 2016 TLX is positioned as a performance luxury sedan, so you’re looking at a car meant to balance driving appeal with upscale character. The overview also frames it as part of Acura’s broader effort to rebuild its identity, which helps explain why it aims to feel more purposeful than a typical comfort-first sedan.
32.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there is some room to shop selectively if you want to target value.
Is the 2016 Acura TLX reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The overview presents the TLX as a sedan that aims to blend performance and upscale character, while the expert notes point to a bargain-minded luxury proposition. The performance write-up also suggests the car can feel rewarding when driven with intent, especially in V6 SH-AWD form.
The performance content also points to a smooth and powerful V6, but it notes brake fade under hard, hot driving, so used buyers should pay close attention to braking condition and maintenance history. That makes long-term ownership risk more about wear items and prior use than about the car’s basic appeal.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Acura TLX?
At 51.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has larger wheels, performance tires, or signs of harder driving. Focus on brake condition, tire wear, and any evidence of collision repair so you can judge whether the car still matches its intended luxury-sport character.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The TLX is presented as a value-priced 4-door sedan with 4-cylinder and V6 versions, and the cabin is described as upscale but not especially exciting. Base versions miss some of the richer equipment and visual appeal that help the car feel more premium.
- Powertrain: The TLX is available with a 4-cylinder or V6 engine, and the V6 SH-AWD setup is described as the more engaging choice. The performance content also notes that the V6 can feel smooth and strong, while hard use can expose brake fade.
- Safety package: The car includes sophisticated driver-assistance and collision-avoidance technology, but the safety write-up also points to a Marginal result in small-overlap frontal protection and a Marginal result for LATCH ease of use.
- Infotainment: The TLX does not offer Wi-Fi access or Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. It does include a dual-screen setup, Bluetooth, Aha and Pandora access, Siri Eyes Free, text and email reading, and available navigation with the Technology Package.
- Fuel efficiency: The performance content says the V6 model was rated at 25 mpg, and the test loop returned 22.8 mpg.
Which 2016 Acura TLX trim should I buy?
The 2016 Acura TLX is offered in 2 trim levels: TLX 2.4, TLX 3.5 SH-AWD.
Here's the short version:
- TLX 2.4: This is the entry point and the value play if you want the TLX’s upscale cabin and core luxury-sedan mission without paying for the V6 and SH-AWD hardware. It suits you best if comfort and price matter more than maximum performance.
- TLX 3.5 SH-AWD: This is the better choice if you want the TLX to feel more like the performance luxury sedan Acura says it is. The V6, torque-vectoring SH-AWD, and handling upgrades make it the more compelling pick, and it is the best-value trim if you care about driving enjoyment.
The safety content notes a Marginal small-overlap frontal result and a Marginal LATCH ease-of-use result, so inspect any used example carefully regardless of trim.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Acura TLX?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 32.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 568 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 51.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $14,030, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Acura TLX's resale value?
The current average of $14,691 sits slightly above last year's $14,665.
That small increase suggests the TLX has held its value fairly steadily rather than swinging sharply in either direction. For a future seller, that kind of stability can be helpful because it points to a market that is not punishing the model year. It also means condition, mileage, and equipment will likely matter more than broad market movement when you go to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Acura TLX safe?
The 2016 Acura TLX earns five-star ratings across the board from NHTSA, but it also gets a Marginal rating for small-overlap frontal-impact protection from IIHS.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
The safety content says Acura’s driver-assistance and collision-avoidance technologies generally operate with a high level of sophistication. It also notes a Marginal result for child-seat LATCH ease of use, so you should pay attention to how well the rear seat works for your needs if you plan to install child seats.
Should I buy a 2016 Acura TLX or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 32.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 51.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The expert summary frames it as part of Acura’s effort to rebuild passion and pride around the brand.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $13,542, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $14,691 average.
- Rewarding driving dynamics and modern tech make it a credible premium alternative.
The bottom line: If you want the current-year TLX with stable pricing and a solid supply of listings, the 2016 is the cleaner starting point. If your priority is saving money up front, the 2015 is the better value-oriented path, especially if you find one in strong condition.
