Why it stands out
Perhaps the most important changes to the 2016 Acura RDX are the ones you can’t easily see. Acura gives its 5-passenger crossover SUV a thorough update for 2016, upgrading the powertrain, enhancing vehicle safety, and installing new infotainment technologies. It also gets freshened styling, so the changes are not limited to what’s under the surface.
That combination makes the 2016 Acura RDX appealing to buyers who want a compact luxury crossover that feels meaningfully updated rather than lightly revised. Its strengths are the breadth of the refresh and the way Acura aimed to improve both everyday usability and overall appeal at the same time. The main limitation is simply that the update asks shoppers to be open-minded, but for those who are, the RDX is presented as worthy of consideration.

Took a while to locate a late model one that had all the electronic safety features. Adaptive Cruise Control, lane keeping assist, cross traffic’ alert, etc. They should all be standard and perhaps on new models they are. It’s a great car and we’ll prices.

Is the 2016 Acura RDX a good car?
Generally — the 2016 Acura RDX earns a 4/5 user rating and a 7.17/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.
The refresh gives you a more thoroughly updated compact luxury crossover, with upgraded powertrain, improved safety, new infotainment technology, and freshened styling. That makes it a stronger fit if you want a small luxury SUV that feels meaningfully updated rather than lightly revised.
The model also lands in a practical sweet spot for shoppers who want everyday usability and a premium feel without moving up to a larger crossover. 33.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Acura RDX reliable?
Owners rate it 4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The RDX is described as expected to be reliable, expected to hold its value well, and expected to be relatively affordable to own over time. Its V6 also uses Variable Cylinder Management to help efficiency, and premium fuel is recommended but not required.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure the vehicle was maintained consistently, since a luxury crossover’s ownership costs can rise if prior care was uneven.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Acura RDX?
At 55.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with a price that looks unusually strong. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the vehicle’s equipment and safety systems work as expected.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base setup includes the refreshed styling and Jewel Eye LED headlights, but the top package adds the 18-inch machined-finish wheels and every factory option. The base, AcuraWatch, and Technology packages do not get those top-package wheel upgrades.
- Powertrain: You get a 3.5-liter V6 with 279 horsepower, a 6-speed automatic, front-wheel drive standard, and available all-wheel drive. The engine is more powerful and more fuel-efficient than the prior version, and it can return up to 29 mpg on the highway.
- Safety package: AcuraWatch Plus adds adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist. Technology and Advance packages add blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert.
- Infotainment: The RDX uses a dual-screen setup, with the lower screen for radio and media and the upper screen for the rest of the system. Pairing and streaming are easy, and the navigation map can show real-time traffic data.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA estimates for AWD are 19 mpg city, 28 mpg highway, and 22 mpg combined. In testing, it returned 19.8 mpg on one loop and 22.3 mpg over a week.
Which 2016 Acura RDX trim should I buy?
The 2016 Acura RDX is offered in 4 trim levels: base, AcuraWatch, Technology, Advance.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: This is the simplest way into the RDX, but you give up the added driver-assistance and convenience content that comes with the higher packages.
- Sweet-spot trim: The Technology package is the best value if you want the stronger mix of infotainment and safety upgrades without jumping all the way to the top package.
- Premium/top trim: The Advance package is the most fully equipped choice, adding every factory option and the blind-spot warning system with rear cross-traffic alert.
The Advance package also carries the highest price premium, so it makes the most sense if you want the fullest feature set rather than the best bargain.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Acura RDX?
The market looks moderately favorable if you’re a selective buyer.
- Deal availability: 33.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 701 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.50% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 55.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $14,589.08, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Acura RDX's resale value?
The current average of $14,880 sits slightly below last year's $15,581.
That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point today. For a future seller, it also means resale value may depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the vehicle was maintained.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Acura RDX safe?
earns a five-star overall rating from the federal government, with five-star ratings in each collision assessment and a four-star rating for rollover resistance.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
AcuraWatch Plus adds adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist. Technology and Advance packages also add blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert.
One caveat is that the lane-departure warning system was less accurate in testing, so you should verify that the driver-assistance features behave the way you expect during a test drive.
Should I buy a 2016 Acura RDX or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 33.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 55.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.50% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- For 2016, Acura gives the RDX a thorough update, upgrading the powertrain, enhancing vehicle safety, and installing new infotainment technologies.
The bottom line: If you want the more updated version of this compact luxury crossover, the 2016 is the better target because it brings the refresh-era improvements in power, safety, and tech. If you’re mainly shopping on price, a nearby year may still make sense, but the 2016 is the stronger pick when you want the newer-feeling package and can find a clean example at a good price.
