CarGurus Analysis: 2015 Toyota Tacoma
overall

Summary
With 1,517 currently listed for sale and an average price of $20,184, 30.7% of 2015 Toyota Tacoma listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2015 Toyota Tacoma 4.33 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6 / 10.
61.2% of 2015 Toyota Tacoma listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2015 Toyota Tacoma stands out as a rugged, off-road-focused pickup in its final year before a complete redesign. In this form, it is available as a limited-production TRD Pro trim that enhances its off-road capability in a Baja-flavored way. That makes it especially appealing to buyers who want a truck aimed at rough terrain rather than broad family duty.
At the same time, the Tacoma’s age is part of the story. From a technological standpoint, it definitely shows its age, so shoppers looking for the latest features may find it lacking. It is also described as a one-trick pony that may not serve as a versatile family vehicle, but for drivers whose destinations lie far off the beaten path, it offers clear talent and purpose.

This truck has a lot of cool features although it's lacking power seats. I would compare it to the Nissan Frontier and Ford Ranger.

The Gen 2 Tacoma VVI 4.0 L cycl. motor is relatively maintenance free . Change the oil religiously every 5 to 7500 k mi. And you should expect 300,000 plus. Mi.s What the Tacoma lacks in technology and fine durable finishes it makes up in worry free workhorse performance and longevity. And perhaps moreover long-term resale value!

Is the 2015 Toyota Tacoma a good car?
Generally — 4.33/5 — the 2015 Toyota Tacoma earns a 6/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Look and feel and Cost effectiveness.
Owners commonly praise its reliability, rugged look, powerful engine, comfort, and spaciousness. The truck’s use case is clear: it is aimed at buyers who want a rugged pickup for work, play, and rougher terrain rather than broad family duty. That focus helps explain why it appeals most if you value purpose-built capability over modern tech or everyday versatility.
Only 31.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so the market is selective even if the truck’s overall value proposition is strong.
Is the 2015 Toyota Tacoma reliable?
Owners rate it 4.33/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owners also describe it as reliable, and the review summary points to a rugged, dependable truck that many people feel good about living with over time. The expert evaluation reinforces that theme by describing the Tacoma as a durable machine with strong reliability and dependability. It also notes that Toyota dealers are willing to discount it, which can help offset ownership costs.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that age and hard use can matter more than mileage alone, so condition and maintenance history deserve close attention.
What should I look for when buying a used 2015 Toyota Tacoma?
At 60.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has seen off-road use or heavy work duty. Focus on signs of wear in the suspension, underbody, tires, and interior, since this model’s appeal often comes from hard use rather than gentle commuting. If you are shopping a TRD Pro, make sure the added hardware and modifications are documented and functioning as expected.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The TRD Pro stands out with off-road hardware, including an electronically locking rear differential, hill-start assist control, downhill assist control, bead-lock-style wheels, knobby all-terrain tires, Bilstein shocks with remote reservoirs, and increased suspension travel. It also rides higher than a stock Tacoma and has no step rails, while the cabin still leans heavily on cheap, gray plastic rather than upscale materials.
- Powertrain: The truck uses a 4.0-liter V6, and the TRD Pro test truck’s optional supercharger raises output to 295 horsepower and 318 lb-ft of torque. The performance notes also point to a thirsty setup, with an average of 15.1 mpg in testing.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes 6 airbags and Smart Stop Technology. An optional reversing camera is mentioned, and downhill assistance control is part of the TRD Pro’s off-road equipment. The safety content also notes that the truck’s protection is limited compared with newer rivals.
- Infotainment: The standard setup centers on a 6.1-inch touchscreen with USB 2.0, Bluetooth pairing, and music streaming. The TRD Pro adds Entune App Suite, a reversing camera, navigation, a JBL premium sound system, voice recognition, satellite radio, predictive traffic and weather reports, and HD Radio.
- Fuel efficiency: The TRD Pro averaged 15.1 mpg in testing, and the broader cost-effectiveness discussion says 18 mpg from the 4.0-liter V6 is not especially impressive.
Which 2015 Toyota Tacoma trim should I buy?
The 2015 Toyota Tacoma is offered in 1 trim level: TRD Pro.
Here's the short version:
The TRD Pro is the clear choice if you want the most off-road-focused version of this Tacoma. It adds the suspension, tires, locking differential, and other hardware that make this truck feel purpose-built for rough terrain, and it also brings the richer tech package with navigation, JBL audio, and Entune App Suite. If you want the Tacoma’s personality at its most extreme, this is the one to target.
The safety package is limited, so even this trim still asks you to accept older-era protection and equipment.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2015 Toyota Tacoma?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 31.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,515 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.98% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 60.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $19,442, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2015 Toyota Tacoma's resale value?
The current average of $20,195 sits slightly below last year's $20,816.
That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point. For a future seller, that also means resale value may depend more on condition, trim desirability, and documentation than on age alone. Trucks with cleaner histories and stronger equipment tend to hold buyer interest better when the market is selective.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2015 Toyota Tacoma safe?
The 2015 Toyota Tacoma earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA, with three-star protection for the front passenger in a frontal-impact collision and four-star rollover resistance for the standard 4WD Double Cab.
It earns a 3/10 safety score from our experts.
The safety content points to 6 standard airbags and Smart Stop Technology, with an optional reversing camera and downhill assistance control on the TRD Pro. It also notes that the truck gets Good ratings from the IIHS, but it has not been tested for small overlap frontal protection, and the roof crush strength rating is Marginal. That combination means you should treat safety as a clear weak point relative to newer trucks.
Should I buy a 2015 Toyota Tacoma or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2015 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2015 if:
- 31.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 60.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.98% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- Expert or safety highlight specific to this year: it is the final-year Tacoma before a complete redesign, and the TRD Pro gives you the most off-road-focused version.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $23,640, the 2016 costs more than the current year's $20,195 average.
- The redesign brings a broader, more flexible lineup with 29 configurations and two cab styles.
The bottom line: If you want the lower-priced, final-year version with a clear off-road identity, the 2015 is the better fit. If you are willing to spend more for a redesigned truck with broader configuration flexibility, the 2016 is the stronger alternative. For price-sensitive buyers, the 2015 makes the most sense; for shoppers who want the next-generation truck, move up a year.
