CarGurus Analysis: 2015 Toyota Tacoma
overall

Summary
With 1,391 currently listed for sale and an average price of $20,403.00, 28.6% of 2015 Toyota Tacomas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2015 Toyota Tacoma 4.33 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6 / 10.
61.6% of 2015 Tacoma models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2015 Toyota Tacoma stands out as a truck built for buyers who care more about capability than modern tech. In its final year of production before a complete redesign, it was available as a limited-production TRD Pro trim that enhanced its off-road ability in a Baja-flavored way. That focus gives it a clear identity: it is the kind of Tacoma meant for drivers whose destinations are far off the beaten path.
That same specialization is also what limits its appeal. The truck is described as a one-trick pony that may not serve well as a versatile family vehicle, and it definitely shows its age from a technological standpoint. Even so, that old-school character is part of the draw for shoppers who want a rugged, purpose-built pickup with undeniable off-road talent.

This truck has a lot of cool features although it's lacking power seats. I would compare it to the Nissan Frontier and Ford Ranger.

The Gen 2 Tacoma VVI 4.0 L cycl. motor is relatively maintenance free . Change the oil religiously every 5 to 7500 k mi. And you should expect 300,000 plus. Mi.s What the Tacoma lacks in technology and fine durable finishes it makes up in worry free workhorse performance and longevity. And perhaps moreover long-term resale value!

Owners rate it 4.33/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback points to reliability, and the expert commentary reinforces that this is a durable machine you can count on over time. The truck’s old-school design and purpose-built character support that reputation, especially if you want something that can take abuse and keep going.
The expert notes also describe it as dependable and durable, and the cost-effectiveness commentary says Toyota’s reputation for value retention and toughness works in its favor. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that age and hard use can magnify wear, so condition matters a lot.
What should I look for when buying a used 2015 Toyota Tacoma?
At 61.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough inspection of bodywork, frame condition, and signs of off-road abuse. Because this truck is often bought for hard use, you’ll want to focus on how it was maintained and whether any repairs suggest repeated trail or work duty.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The TRD Pro stands out with off-road hardware, including an electronically locking rear differential, hill-start assist control, downhill assist control, bead-lock-style wheels, knobby all-terrain tires, Bilstein shocks with remote reservoirs, and increased suspension travel. It also rides higher than a stock Tacoma, but it lacks step rails, and the cabin still leans heavily on cheap, gray plastic.
- Powertrain: The 4.0-liter V6 is the core engine here, and the TRD supercharger raises output to 295 horsepower and 318 lb-ft of torque. The added power makes the truck feel much quicker, but it also brings a noisy character and thirsty fuel use.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes 6 airbags and Smart Stop Technology, with an optional reversing camera and downhill assistance control on the test truck. The truck’s safety setup is basic, and the TRD Pro does not get the same rollover rating cited for the standard 4WD Double Cab.
- Infotainment: The standard setup uses a 6.1-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth and a fast-charging USB 2.0 port. The TRD Pro adds Entune App Suite, a reversing camera, navigation, a JBL premium sound system, voice recognition, satellite radio, predictive traffic and weather reports, and HD Radio.
- Fuel efficiency: The test truck averaged 15.1 mpg, and the cost-effectiveness commentary says a normal Tacoma’s 18 mpg from the 4.0-liter V6 is still not especially impressive.
Which 2015 Toyota Tacoma trim should I buy?
The 2015 Toyota Tacoma is offered in 1 trim level: TRD Pro.
Here's the short version:
TRD Pro: This is the one to buy if you want the Tacoma’s most distinctive off-road setup and don’t mind paying for it. It adds the suspension, tires, locking rear differential, and other hardware that make this truck feel purpose-built for rough terrain, and it also brings the richer infotainment setup. It’s the clear choice if your priority is trail capability and you want the most character in the lineup.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2015 Toyota Tacoma?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 29.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,441 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.19% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 61.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $19,437.81, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2015 Toyota Tacoma's resale value?
The current average of $20,584 sits slightly below last year's $20,832.
That modest decline suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy more confidently now. For a future seller, it also means you should expect value to hold reasonably well, but not necessarily appreciate in the short term. The Tacoma’s strong owner satisfaction and reputation for durability should continue to support demand.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2015 Toyota Tacoma safe?
The Tacoma gets a four-star overall rating from NHTSA, with three-star protection for the front passenger in a frontal-impact collision and a four-star rollover resistance rating for the standard 4WD Double Cab.
It earns a 3/10 safety score from our experts.
The safety setup includes 6 standard airbags and Smart Stop Technology, plus an optional reversing camera and downhill assistance control on the test truck. The expert commentary also flags the truck’s age and notes that the roof crush strength rating is Marginal, so you should not treat this as a modern safety leader.
Should I buy a 2015 Toyota Tacoma or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2015 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2015 if:
- 29.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 61.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.19% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It’s the final-year Tacoma before the redesign, with the limited-production TRD Pro adding standout off-road hardware.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $24,191, the 2016 costs more than the current year's $20,584 average.
- It brings a full redesign with 29 configurations and broader cab-and-drive-layout flexibility.
The bottom line: If you want the lower entry price and the old-school Tacoma character, the 2015 is the better value play. If you’d rather pay more for the redesigned truck’s broader configuration range and newer packaging, the 2016 is the smarter upgrade. For most price-sensitive buyers, the 2015 makes more sense as long as you verify history and condition carefully.
