What should I look for when buying a used 2015 Subaru Outback?

At 60.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with visible wear. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and whether the car’s safety and convenience equipment works as expected. If you want the best ownership experience, pay close attention to how the cabin, electronics, and driver-assistance features have held up.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The 2.5i comes with basic 17-inch steel wheels with wheel covers, but it does include a rear-view camera, Bluetooth connectivity, a touchscreen interface for the climate control and audio systems, and a roof rack with crossbars. The 2.5i Premium adds 17-inch alloy wheels, an 8-way power driver’s seat, heated front seats, fog lamps, and dual-zone automatic climate control. The 2.5i Limited adds 18-inch alloy wheels, a power liftgate, heated rear seats, active fog lights, blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic detection, and lane-change assist technology. The 3.6R Limited adds a 6-cylinder engine and Xenon headlamps. The 2.5i Limited is the best-value trim if you want the strongest mix of comfort and safety equipment.
• Powertrain: The standard 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine makes 175 hp and uses a CVT, with all-wheel drive standard. The 3.6R adds a more powerful 6-cylinder engine for buyers who want stronger acceleration.
• Safety package: EyeSight is the named driver-assistance suite, and it uses two windshield-mounted cameras to monitor the road ahead, warn you about danger, and brake the car to a full stop if needed. It is an option for Premium and Limited trim levels. The Rear Vehicle Detection System, which includes blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-change assist, is optional on Premium models and standard on Limited models.
• Infotainment: Starlink includes Bluetooth smartphone connectivity, hands-free calling, music streaming, and mobile apps. The available navigation system uses a 7-inch touchscreen, and the interface supports swipe and pinch gestures.
• Fuel efficiency: The Outback is described as not penalizing buyers in terms of fuel economy, and the expert evaluation says the standard engine is paired with decent efficiency for the class. The source also notes an EPA rating of 28 mpg in combined driving.

Which 2015 Subaru Outback trim should I buy?

The 2015 Subaru Outback is offered in 4 trim levels: 2.5i, 2.5i Premium, 2.5i Limited, 3.6R Limited.

Here's the short version:

• 2.5i: This is the entry point, and it already gives you useful basics like a rear-view camera, Bluetooth, a touchscreen interface for climate and audio, and a roof rack with crossbars. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the Outback’s standard all-wheel-drive formula.
• 2.5i Premium: This trim adds the comfort upgrades many shoppers will notice every day, including heated front seats, an 8-way power driver’s seat, fog lamps, and dual-zone automatic climate control. It’s the trim that most clearly balances price and livability.
• 2.5i Limited: This is the best-value trim if you want the most complete package without moving to the 6-cylinder model. You get 18-inch alloy wheels, a power liftgate, heated rear seats, active fog lights, blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic detection, and lane-change assist technology.

That softer pricing suggests the market has become a little more favorable for buyers, but it also means future sellers may need to stay realistic on asking price. Should I buy a 2015 Subaru Outback or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2015 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2015 if:

• 31.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 60.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.81% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.9/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• Redesigned for 2015, it’s bigger, more refined, and still keeps standard all-wheel drive.

Consider the 2016 if:

• At $12,316, the 2016 costs more than the current year's $10,907 average.
• It’s framed as a better fit for active use and outdoor trips.

The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2015 is the stronger starting point because prices have eased and the model still delivers the core Outback formula. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer-year alternative, the 2016 may appeal more if its added emphasis on active-lifestyle use matters to you.

How does the 2015 Subaru Outback compare to the 2015 Toyota RAV4?

Our experts score the 2015 Subaru Outback 8.2/10 and the 2015 Toyota RAV4 7.3/10.

The Outback gives you a stronger value proposition here, with a lower average used price and a higher expert score. The RAV4 has a slightly stronger deal share and more listings, but the Outback stands out for its standard all-wheel drive, stronger safety reputation, and more versatile, wagon-like practicality. If you want the more affordable and more safety-focused choice, the Outback is the better fit; if you want a more conventional compact SUV with more inventory to browse, the RAV4 is worth a look.
