Overall the experience of driving the vehicle is fantastic. The higher seating above a sedan car makes this a pleasant ride in any weather enabling the driver to see far ahead when driving in heavy traffic. It has enough air bags to float a tank.

Our Limited AWD is a very solid car that we expect to drive for a long time. Very comfortable seats. The space is easily configured for people or cargo. Love the shelf under the dash!

Overall... excellent vehicle. Front row and 2nd row seats adjust to accommodate most drivers/riders. I did alot of shopping around before I made my purchase and what I found is that the Highlander is really the best value for the money. The interior is very nice... not cheap looking as compared to some other mid-size SUVs which were actually more expensive.

The car feels solid, that’s what I was looking for. The downside is that the seats are uncomfortable and the mirrors don’t fold in.

There are 1,217 listings available, which gives you a solid pool to compare trims and conditions. If you find a listing below $14,923.45, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2014 Toyota Highlander a good car?
Yes — the 2014 Toyota Highlander earns a 4.78/5 user rating and an 8.67/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise its reliability, comfort, and value for money, and they also like the spacious interior and useful features. The overview points to a family-friendly crossover with seating for up to eight, while the expert review emphasizes that it brings more style and driving appeal than earlier Highlanders. With 32.1% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding one that fits your budget well.
Is the 2014 Toyota Highlander reliable?
Owners rate it 4.78/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner summary repeatedly points to reliability, and it also frames the Highlander as a vehicle people feel good about living with over time. The expert review adds that it delivers a strong blend of power, technology, and everyday usability, which supports the idea that it’s built to be a dependable family hauler. The cost-effectiveness notes also suggest you get a lot of content for the money, which can make ownership feel easier to justify over the long haul.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright durability and more about finding a well-kept example with the right maintenance history and condition.
What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Toyota Highlander?
At 56.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the price looks unusually attractive. Focus on signs of prior bodywork, uneven wear, and interior condition, since those clues can tell you a lot about how the vehicle was treated. If you’re shopping a family crossover, comfort and feature functionality matter too, so make sure everything you’ll use daily works as expected.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base LE trim includes standard seating for 8, a 6.1-inch touchscreen, backup camera, Bluetooth hands-free calling, and plenty of storage, while the LE Plus adds three-zone climate control with rear climate toggles, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, and SofTex leatherette seating. The XLE adds navigation, leather seating, and a detailed color digital display in the instrument panel, and the Limited adds 19-inch wheels, a JBL audio system, and upgraded safety tech like blind-spot monitoring.
- Powertrain: The base LE uses a 185-hp 2.7-liter inline 4-cylinder, but the 3.5-liter V6 is the stronger choice and is standard on LE Plus and above. The V6 makes 270 hp, pairs with a 6-speed automatic, and is tuned to balance performance with efficiency.
- Safety package: Standard safety equipment includes a backup camera, tire pressure monitoring system, and a full array of advanced front and side impact airbags. The available pre-collision system is tied to the Top Safety Pick Plus recognition, and other available driver aids include lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.
- Infotainment: The Highlander uses the Entune multimedia touchscreen interface with apps such as Pandora, Yelp, and Bing. Navigation-equipped vehicles do not get a dedicated dash button for that function, and the system also includes live-pausing radio.
- Fuel efficiency: Front-wheel-drive V6 trims achieve up to 19 mpg city and 25 mpg highway, while I4 FWD trims get 20 mpg city and 25 mpg highway. The AWD V6 test trim was listed at 18 mpg city and 24 mpg highway.
Which 2014 Toyota Highlander trim should I buy?
The 2014 Toyota Highlander is offered in 4 trim levels: LE, LE Plus, XLE, Limited.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The LE gives you the essentials, but it lacks the richer cabin materials and added convenience features found higher up the range. If you want the lowest entry price, it works, but it is the most basic way into the lineup.
- Sweet-spot trim: The LE Plus is the best value pick because it adds meaningful everyday upgrades like three-zone climate control, rear climate toggles, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, and SofTex seating without jumping all the way to the top price tier.
- Premium/top trim: The Limited is the most upscale choice, with 19-inch wheels, a JBL audio system, and upgraded safety tech like blind-spot monitoring. It’s the trim to target if you want the most comfort and tech.
- Off-road trim: The AWD setup adds capability beyond typical crossover duty, but the performance notes suggest it’s more about all-weather confidence and light rough-road use than serious off-road driving.
The available pre-collision system is the key safety-package note to look for if safety tech is a priority.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Toyota Highlander?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient and compare condition carefully.
- Deal availability: 32.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,217 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.11% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 56.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $14,923.45, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2014 Toyota Highlander's resale value?
The current average of $15,841 sits slightly below last year's $16,183.
That price movement suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy at a more favorable point if you plan to keep the vehicle for several years. For a future seller, a softer entry price can also mean less downside if the Highlander continues to hold demand well. Strong owner satisfaction and a reputation for family usefulness can help support buyer interest when it’s time to resell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.78/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2014 Toyota Highlander safe?
When selected with the available pre-collision system, it is a 2014 Top Safety Pick Plus award winner.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes a backup camera, tire pressure monitoring system, and a full array of advanced front and side impact airbags. Available driver-assistance features include lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. The strongest safety recognition is tied to the available pre-collision system, so that feature is worth prioritizing if you want the most complete safety package.
Should I buy a 2014 Toyota Highlander or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 32.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 56.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.11% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.78/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2014 model stands out for its more athletic styling, stronger driving appeal, and family-friendly mix of power, technology, and safety.
The bottom line: If you want a used Highlander with a stronger style update and a well-rounded family focus, the 2014 is a sensible target. If you’re shopping mainly on price, you should still compare condition closely and look for the best-maintained example rather than chasing the cheapest listing.
