Summary
With 1,187 currently listed for sale and an average price of $15,877, 32.3% of 2014 Toyota Highlanders for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2014 Toyota Highlander 4.78 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.67 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2014 Toyota Highlander stands out as a family crossover that feels more engaging than the stereotype suggests. Toyota gave it a healthy shot of youthfulness and excitement, along with enough power, technology, and athletic styling to make everyday driving feel more appealing. It is also presented as a vehicle that can handle both a quick trip to the corner store and a weekend run to the mountains, which speaks to its broad usefulness.
That versatility is part of its appeal: the Highlander is aimed at buyers who want a practical family vehicle without giving up all sense of style or driving enjoyment. Owners commonly praise its reliability, comfort, value for money, and spacious interior, and they also appreciate its useful features. At the same time, some wish for better fuel economy and seat comfort, and the absence of modern conveniences like push-button start and a sunroof may matter to shoppers who want a more fully equipped cabin.

Overall the experience of driving the vehicle is fantastic. The higher seating above a sedan car makes this a pleasant ride in any weather enabling the driver to see far ahead when driving in heavy traffic. It has enough air bags to float a tank.

Our Limited AWD is a very solid car that we expect to drive for a long time. Very comfortable seats. The space is easily configured for people or cargo. Love the shelf under the dash!

Overall... excellent vehicle. Front row and 2nd row seats adjust to accommodate most drivers/riders. I did alot of shopping around before I made my purchase and what I found is that the Highlander is really the best value for the money. The interior is very nice... not cheap looking as compared to some other mid-size SUVs which were actually more expensive.

The car feels solid, that’s what I was looking for. The downside is that the seats are uncomfortable and the mirrors don’t fold in.

How much does the 2014 Toyota Highlander cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $15,859 |
| Year-Round Low | $14,947 |
| Year-Round High | $16,206 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $16,134 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −1.70% |
Prices have softened 1.70% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,189 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of options to compare on price and condition.
Is the 2014 Toyota Highlander a good car?
Yes — the 4.78/5 user rating and 8.67/10 expert rating both point to a strong overall ownership experience. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.
Owners repeatedly praise its reliability, comfort, value for money, spacious interior, and useful features. In use-case terms, it fits you well if you want a practical family vehicle that still brings some style and driving enjoyment to everyday errands and weekend trips.
With 33.1% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding a competitively priced example.
Is the 2014 Toyota Highlander reliable?
Owners rate it 4.78/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. The owner feedback also points to reliability, being dependable, and feeling like a vehicle you can count on over time.
The expert evaluation reinforces that impression by describing the Highlander as a capable, competent crossover with enough power and control for everyday use and more demanding trips. The cost-effectiveness commentary also suggests it delivers a lot of content for the price.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about the model’s overall reputation and more about finding one that has been maintained well and hasn’t been worn down by family-duty mileage.
What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Toyota Highlander?
At 55.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with visible cosmetic wear. Focus on signs of prior bodywork, uneven panel gaps, tire wear, and interior condition, since family use can leave a lot of wear even when the vehicle still drives well.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base LE includes standard seating for 8, a 6.1-inch touchscreen, a backup camera, and Bluetooth hands-free calling. The LE Plus adds three-zone climate control with rear climate toggles, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, and SofTex leatherette seating. The XLE adds navigation, leather seating, and a detailed color digital display in the instrument panel. The Limited adds 19-inch wheels, a JBL audio system, and upgraded safety tech like blind-spot monitoring.
- Powertrain: The base LE uses a 185-hp 2.7-liter inline 4-cylinder, while a 3.5-liter V6 is optional on the LE and standard on the LE Plus and above. The V6 makes 270 hp and pairs with a 6-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel-drive V6 trims are rated at 19 mpg city/25 highway, and the I4 with FWD is rated at 20/25.
- Safety package: The Highlander comes standard with a backup camera, tire pressure monitoring system, and a full array of advanced front and side impact airbags. With the available pre-collision system, it is a 2014 Top Safety Pick Plus award winner. Available driver-assistance features include lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.
- Infotainment: The Highlander uses Entune, a multimedia touchscreen interface with apps such as Pandora streaming radio, Yelp, and Bing. The touchscreen is 6.1 inches, and navigation is available, though it is accessed through the app page rather than a dedicated dash button. The system also includes live-pausing radio.
- Fuel efficiency: Front-wheel-drive V6 trims are rated at 19 mpg city and 25 highway, while the front-wheel-drive I4 is rated at 20 mpg city and 25 highway. An AWD test trim was listed at 18 mpg city and 24 highway.
Which 2014 Toyota Highlander trim should I buy?
The 2014 Toyota Highlander is offered in 4 trim levels: LE, LE Plus, XLE, Limited.
Here's the short version:
- LE: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core Highlander experience with 8-passenger seating, a 6.1-inch touchscreen, a backup camera, and Bluetooth. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the model, but it is the most basic choice.
- LE Plus: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds three-zone climate control with rear climate toggles, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, and SofTex leatherette seating. If you want a nicer cabin without jumping too far in price, this is the trim to focus on.
- XLE: This trim adds navigation, leather seating, and a detailed color digital display in the instrument panel. It suits you if you want a more upscale feel and are willing to pay for it.
- Limited: This is the most feature-rich trim, with 19-inch wheels, a JBL audio system, and upgraded safety tech like blind-spot monitoring. It is the right pick if you want the most equipment and are comfortable paying for it.
The safety package note to keep in mind is that the available pre-collision system is tied to the Top Safety Pick Plus recognition, and the Limited is the trim that adds upgraded safety tech like blind-spot monitoring.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Toyota Highlander?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient and compare condition carefully.
- Deal availability: 33.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,189 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.70% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 55.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $14,947, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2014 Toyota Highlander's resale value?
The current average of $15,859 sits slightly below last year's $16,134.
That tells you the market has eased a bit, which can help you as a buyer now but may temper what you can expect later if you plan to resell. A softer price trend usually means future sellers need to be more competitive on condition, mileage, and equipment to stand out.
If you buy well and keep the vehicle in strong shape, you can help protect your exit value. Well-kept examples with desirable equipment should remain easier to move than rougher ones.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.78/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2014 Toyota Highlander safe?
The 2014 Toyota Highlander earns a Top Safety Pick Plus award from IIHS when equipped with the available pre-collision system.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes a backup camera, tire pressure monitoring system, and a full array of advanced front and side impact airbags. Available driver-assistance features include lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.
The main caveat is that the strongest safety recognition depends on the available pre-collision system, so you should verify that a used example has the safety equipment you want.
Should I buy a 2014 Toyota Highlander or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 33.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 55.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.70% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.78/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2014 Highlander was described as having enough power, technology, and athletic styling to make everyday driving more appealing.
The bottom line: If you want a used Highlander with strong owner satisfaction, solid safety, and a market that has softened a bit, the 2014 is a sensible choice. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you can use the current inventory and deal mix to shop carefully and prioritize condition over chasing the cheapest listing.
