CarGurus Analysis: 2014 Subaru Legacy
overall

Summary
With 415 currently listed for sale and an average price of $8,818, 28.9% of 2014 Subaru Legacies for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2014 Subaru Legacy 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.33 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2014 Subaru Legacy stands out as a practical family sedan that emphasizes substance over style. It may not be the prettiest four-door car, but it earns attention for fuel economy, safety, comfort, quality, and its ability to handle harsh weather. It is also described as fun to drive and a good value, which gives it a broader appeal than its understated appearance might suggest.
Its 4-cylinder engine may not look impressive on paper, but the CVT is said to make the most of its horsepower and torque, and the 2014 Subaru Legacy 2.5i rarely feels underpowered in real-world driving. That combination helps explain why the car can feel more capable than its specifications imply. For buyers who want a dependable sedan that is comfortable, efficient, and confident in difficult conditions, the 2014 Subaru Legacy has a clear identity.
At the same time, it is not the most modern-feeling choice, and some drivers note that it lacks certain tech features found in competitors. Even so, its strengths in safety, comfort, reliability, and winter-friendly confidence make it appealing to shoppers who value everyday usefulness over flash.

I Love this car, my favorite color and drives so smooth and can't say enough how much room there is.

Reviewed a 2014 Subaru 2.5i Premium AWD on Sep 9, 2013
When I started researching fuel-efficient all wheel drive vehicles, the Subaru Legacy was at the top of the list. I live in the Northeast, and drive about 40 miles each way (mostly highway) to and from work, and during the winter months, I need AWD. I test drove the 2014 Subaru Legacy and immediately loved that it handles like a sports car, not like an SUV. I also like the CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) which makes for a smooth ride and acceleration. But most of all, love the money it will be saving me at the pump! I needed to make sure that it was reliable and safe, so after some additional research, took delivery on my first red car!

I have always heard extremely terrific reviews of Subaru’s, from safety, comfort and milage. These cars last FOREVER! And in my experience, they are not an overly priced car.

How can you go wrong with an all wheel drive car that is always at the top of the charts when it comes to safety and reliability for under $24,000? Do you get all of the technological bells and whistles as some of the other cars in its class? No. But if you just want a solid car that has decent gas mileage, is great in bad weather and can be had for a decent price, then this is the car for you.

Is the 2014 Subaru Legacy a good car?
Yes — the 2014 Subaru Legacy earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.33/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.
Drivers consistently praise its safety, comfort, and reliability, and many also like the all-wheel-drive confidence it brings in winter weather. Fuel efficiency is another recurring plus, while some owners note that it lacks certain modern tech features compared with rivals.
That lines up with the overview: you’re looking at a practical family sedan that prioritizes everyday usefulness, weather confidence, and value over flash. Good and great deals make up 30.8% of listings, so you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2014 Subaru Legacy reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback repeatedly points to the Legacy as reliable, dependable, and trouble-free over time, with owners saying they feel confident counting on it for daily use. The expert drive notes also emphasize that this Subaru isn’t expected to cost very much to own in the long run, and that its reliability reputation is strong.
The ownership risk for used buyers is mostly about condition and maintenance history, so a careful pre-purchase inspection still matters.
What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Subaru Legacy?
At 58.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough inspection of bodywork, alignment, and signs of prior repair. After that, focus on how the car drives, how the cabin wears, and whether the equipment works as expected.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base 2.5i is the simplest version, while the 2.5i Premium adds a 10-way power driver’s seat, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, a reversing camera, Bluetooth, and a better stereo with HD Radio, satellite radio, a USB port, an iPod connection, and an auxiliary audio input jack. The 2.5i Sport adds 18-inch aluminum wheels, fog lights, fake carbon fiber dashboard trim, a power sunroof, and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror with a Homelink universal garage door opener. The 2.5i Limited adds leather seats, woodgrain trim, dual-zone automatic climate control, a premium Harman Kardon audio system, and fancy gauges. The 2.5i Premium is the best-value pick for most shoppers.
- Powertrain: Most models use a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine with 173 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque, paired with a CVT on most trims. The base version offers a 6-speed manual, and the 3.6R Limited uses a 6-cylinder engine with 256 hp and 247 lb-ft of torque plus a 5-speed automatic. The CVT is described as making the most of the engine’s output and helping the car feel stronger than the numbers suggest.
- Safety package: EyeSight includes adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking, and lane departure warning. It is available on the 2.5i Premium and 2.5i Limited, but not on the 2.5i Sport.
- Infotainment: Subaru’s Starlink technology is included with the optional navigation system. The system supports iPhone pairing, contact downloads, calling, and music streaming, but the touchscreen can be unresponsive and the interface lacks natural voice recognition.
- Fuel efficiency: The 2.5i model is rated at 24 mpg city, 32 mpg highway, and 27 mpg combined, and a weeklong test returned 26.4 mpg.
Which 2014 Subaru Legacy trim should I buy?
The 2014 Subaru Legacy is offered in 5 trim levels: 2.5i, 2.5i Premium, 2.5i Sport, 2.5i Limited, 3.6R Limited.
Here's the short version:
- 2.5i: This is the entry point, and it gives you the Legacy’s standard all-wheel drive and the choice of a 6-speed manual. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the model and don’t need extra convenience features.
- 2.5i Premium: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the most useful everyday upgrades, including the power driver’s seat, reversing camera, Bluetooth, and a better stereo. It also opens the door to EyeSight, which is a major safety upgrade.
- 2.5i Sport: This trim is the style-and-feel choice, with 18-inch wheels, fog lights, and a more distinctive appearance. It’s the one to choose if you care most about looks and don’t mind that it skips EyeSight.
- 2.5i Limited: This is the comfort-focused trim, with leather, dual-zone climate control, and the premium Harman Kardon audio system. It suits you best if you want the most upscale 2.5i experience.
- 3.6R Limited: This is the power upgrade, with the 6-cylinder engine and automatic transmission. Choose it if you want more performance and are willing to pay for it.
EyeSight is available on the 2.5i Premium and 2.5i Limited, but not on the 2.5i Sport.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Subaru Legacy?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 30.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 416 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.57% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 58.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $8,194, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2014 Subaru Legacy's resale value?
The current average of $8,790 sits slightly below last year's $9,022.
That price movement suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy more confidently now. For a future seller, it also means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the car has been maintained.
Because the Legacy has strong value positioning and a solid reputation with owners, it should remain reasonably appealing to used buyers. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2014 Subaru Legacy safe?
The 2014 Subaru Legacy earns an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ rating and a five-star overall crash-test rating from NHTSA. It also earns a three-star rating in the individual side-impact pole test.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
EyeSight is the key driver-assistance suite, and it includes adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking, and lane departure warning. It is available on the 2.5i Premium and 2.5i Limited, but not on the 2.5i Sport.
The main caveat is that the side-impact pole result is weaker than the rest of the crash-test picture, and the suite does not include blind-spot monitoring.
Should I buy a 2014 Subaru Legacy or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 30.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 58.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.57% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It delivers strong value, safety, comfort, and winter-friendly all-wheel-drive confidence.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $10,518, the 2015 costs more than the current year's $8,790 average.
- It is bigger, better looking, and more generously appointed.
The bottom line: If you want the better bargain, the 2014 is the smarter buy because it combines lower pricing with strong owner satisfaction and solid safety. If you’re willing to spend more for a roomier and more upscale feel, the 2015 is the better alternative.
