CarGurus Analysis: 2014 Subaru Legacy
overall

Summary
With 395 currently listed for sale and an average price of $8,889.00, 29.9% of 2014 Subaru Legacies for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2014 Subaru Legacy 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.33 / 10.
58.5% of 2014 Legacy models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2014 Subaru Legacy stands out as a practical family sedan that wins buyers over with substance rather than style. It may not be the prettiest four-door car on the road, but it is described as especially strong in fuel economy, safety, comfort, quality, and in handling harsh weather. That combination makes it appealing for shoppers who want an everyday car that feels well-rounded and dependable.
It also has a reputation for being more capable than its modest power figures suggest. The 4-cylinder engine’s horsepower and torque may look unimpressive on paper, but the CVT is said to make good use of both, so the 2014 Subaru Legacy 2.5i rarely feels underpowered. The same source also calls it fun to drive and good value, which helps explain why it can be an appealing choice even if it does not make the strongest first impression.
There are limits, though. The available information suggests that some buyers may find it lacking in modern tech features compared with competitors. Even so, the 2014 Subaru Legacy’s mix of comfort, efficiency, safety, and all-weather confidence gives it a distinctive appeal for drivers who care more about real-world usefulness than flash.

I Love this car, my favorite color and drives so smooth and can't say enough how much room there is.

Reviewed a 2014 Subaru 2.5i Premium AWD on Sep 9, 2013
When I started researching fuel-efficient all wheel drive vehicles, the Subaru Legacy was at the top of the list. I live in the Northeast, and drive about 40 miles each way (mostly highway) to and from work, and during the winter months, I need AWD. I test drove the 2014 Subaru Legacy and immediately loved that it handles like a sports car, not like an SUV. I also like the CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) which makes for a smooth ride and acceleration. But most of all, love the money it will be saving me at the pump! I needed to make sure that it was reliable and safe, so after some additional research, took delivery on my first red car!

I have always heard extremely terrific reviews of Subaru’s, from safety, comfort and milage. These cars last FOREVER! And in my experience, they are not an overly priced car.

How can you go wrong with an all wheel drive car that is always at the top of the charts when it comes to safety and reliability for under $24,000? Do you get all of the technological bells and whistles as some of the other cars in its class? No. But if you just want a solid car that has decent gas mileage, is great in bad weather and can be had for a decent price, then this is the car for you.

Is the 2014 Subaru Legacy a good car?
Yes — the 2014 Subaru Legacy earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.33/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.
Drivers consistently praise its safety, comfort, and reliability, and they also call out its all-wheel-drive confidence in winter weather. The feedback also highlights fuel efficiency and a well-rounded, dependable feel, even if some shoppers wish it had more modern tech features.
That lines up with the overview’s focus on a practical family sedan that emphasizes real-world usefulness, comfort, and harsh-weather capability over flash. With 24.5% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2014 Subaru Legacy reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback repeatedly points to reliability, dependability, and a car you can count on, especially for everyday driving and winter use. The expert evaluation also describes it as a smart ownership choice and notes that it is expected to be inexpensive to own over the long run.
The powertrain is described as satisfying in real-world use, and the cost-effectiveness commentary says the model is not expected to cost very much to own over time. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure prior wear and maintenance history are clean before you commit.
What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Subaru Legacy?
At 57% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you are considering a higher-mileage example. Focus on overall condition, signs of prior bodywork, and whether the car’s equipment and driving feel match the trim level you want.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base 2.5i is the simplest version, while the 2.5i Premium adds a 10-way power driver’s seat, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, a reversing camera, Bluetooth, and an upgraded stereo with HD Radio, satellite radio, a USB port, an iPod connection, and an auxiliary audio input jack. The 2.5i Sport adds 18-inch aluminum wheels, fog lights, fake carbon fiber dashboard trim, a power sunroof, and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror with a Homelink universal garage door opener. The 2.5i Limited adds leather seats, woodgrain trim, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a premium Harman Kardon audio system. The 2.5i Sport is the best-value trim if you want the strongest mix of style and equipment.
- Powertrain: Most models use a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine with 173 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque, paired with a CVT on most trims. A 6-speed manual is offered only on the base 2.5i, and the 3.6R Limited uses a 6-cylinder engine with 256 hp and 247 lb-ft of torque plus a 5-speed automatic. The CVT is described as making the most of the 4-cylinder’s output and helping the car feel less underpowered in real-world driving.
- Safety package: EyeSight includes adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking, and lane departure warning. It is available on the 2.5i Premium and 2.5i Limited, but not on the 2.5i Sport.
- Infotainment: Subaru’s Starlink technology is included with the optional navigation system, and it supports iPhone pairing, contact downloads, calling, and music streaming. The system lacks natural voice recognition, and the touchscreen can be unresponsive.
- Fuel efficiency: The 2.5i model is rated at 24 mpg city, 32 mpg highway, and 27 mpg combined. The test car averaged 26.4 mpg over a week of driving.
Which 2014 Subaru Legacy trim should I buy?
The 2014 Subaru Legacy is offered in 5 trim levels: 2.5i, 2.5i Premium, 2.5i Sport, 2.5i Limited, 3.6R Limited.
Here's the short version:
- 2.5i: This is the entry point, and it gives you the standard all-wheel-drive Legacy experience at the lowest price. It is the right pick if you want the simplest path into the model and are comfortable with fewer convenience features.
- 2.5i Premium: This is the trim most shoppers will want to step up to because it adds a reversing camera, Bluetooth, and a stronger audio setup along with a power driver’s seat and nicer cabin touches. It is the best-value trim for most buyers.
- 2.5i Sport: This trim is the most appealing if you care about appearance and a more upscale feel, thanks to its 18-inch wheels, fog lights, sunroof, and interior trim upgrades. It is also the favorite of the expert evaluator, but it does not get EyeSight.
- 2.5i Limited: Choose this if you want the most comfort-oriented 4-cylinder version, with leather, woodgrain trim, dual-zone climate control, and the premium audio system. It is the most upscale 2.5i choice.
- 3.6R Limited: This is the power upgrade, with the 6-cylinder engine and automatic transmission for buyers who want more performance. It is the priciest option and makes sense if stronger acceleration matters more than value.
EyeSight is available on the 2.5i Premium and 2.5i Limited, but not on the 2.5i Sport.

What is the 2014 Subaru Legacy's resale value?
The current average of $8,883 sits slightly below last year's $8,890.
That small decline suggests the market has been stable rather than volatile, which is helpful if you plan to own the car for a few years before selling. A steady price pattern can make it easier to estimate future value, especially when the model continues to attract practical buyers.
The Legacy’s value story is also supported by its strong reputation for efficiency, safety, and all-weather usefulness, which helps keep demand broad. If you maintain it well and keep the history clean, it should remain appealing to shoppers looking for a dependable used sedan.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2014 Subaru Legacy safe?
It earns an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ rating and a five-star overall crash-test rating from NHTSA.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
EyeSight is the named driver-assistance suite, and it includes adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking, and lane departure warning. It is available on the 2.5i Premium and 2.5i Limited, but not on the 2.5i Sport.
One caveat is that NHTSA also gives the Legacy a three-star rating in the side-impact pole test. Even so, the overall safety picture remains strong, especially if you choose a trim with EyeSight.
Should I buy a 2014 Subaru Legacy or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 24.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 57% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2014 stands out for standard all-wheel drive, strong fuel economy, and a well-rounded mix of comfort and safety.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $10,802, the 2015 costs more than the current year's $8,883 average.
- Bigger cabin and nicer accommodations.
The bottom line: If you want the better value play, the 2014 is the stronger buy because it combines stable pricing, strong owner satisfaction, and broad practical appeal. If you can spend more and want a newer redesign with a roomier, more polished cabin, the 2015 is the alternative to compare.
