CarGurus Analysis: 2014 Subaru Legacy
overall

Summary
With 395 currently listed for sale and an average price of $8,677.00, 27.3% of 2014 Subaru Legacies for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2014 Subaru Legacy 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.33 / 10.
59.0% of 2014 Legacy models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2014 Subaru Legacy stands out as a practical family sedan that wins buyers over with substance rather than style. It may not be the prettiest four-door car on the road, but it is described as especially strong in fuel economy, safety, comfort, quality, and in handling harsh weather. That combination makes it appealing for shoppers who want an everyday car that feels well-rounded and dependable.
It also has a reputation for being more capable than its modest power figures suggest. The 4-cylinder engine’s horsepower and torque may look unimpressive on paper, but the CVT is said to make good use of both, so the 2014 Subaru Legacy 2.5i rarely feels underpowered. The same source also calls it fun to drive and good value, which helps explain why it can be an appealing choice even if it does not make the strongest first impression.
There are limits, though. The available information suggests that some buyers may find it lacking in modern tech features compared with competitors. Even so, the 2014 Subaru Legacy’s mix of comfort, efficiency, safety, and all-weather confidence gives it a distinctive appeal for drivers who care more about real-world usefulness than flash.

Reviewed a 2014 Subaru 2.5i Premium AWD on Sep 9, 2013
When I started researching fuel-efficient all wheel drive vehicles, the Subaru Legacy was at the top of the list. I live in the Northeast, and drive about 40 miles each way (mostly highway) to and from work, and during the winter months, I need AWD. I test drove the 2014 Subaru Legacy and immediately loved that it handles like a sports car, not like an SUV. I also like the CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) which makes for a smooth ride and acceleration. But most of all, love the money it will be saving me at the pump! I needed to make sure that it was reliable and safe, so after some additional research, took delivery on my first red car!

I have always heard extremely terrific reviews of Subaru’s, from safety, comfort and milage. These cars last FOREVER! And in my experience, they are not an overly priced car.

How can you go wrong with an all wheel drive car that is always at the top of the charts when it comes to safety and reliability for under $24,000? Do you get all of the technological bells and whistles as some of the other cars in its class? No. But if you just want a solid car that has decent gas mileage, is great in bad weather and can be had for a decent price, then this is the car for you.

If you find a listing below $8,198.43, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2014 Subaru Legacy a good car?
Yes — the 2014 Subaru Legacy earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.33/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.
Drivers consistently praise its safety, comfort, and reliability, and many also highlight all-wheel drive for winter driving and strong fuel efficiency. The overview frames it as a practical family sedan that prioritizes substance, with real-world usefulness, comfort, and all-weather confidence standing out more than flash. With 27.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2014 Subaru Legacy reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The user feedback points to reliability, safety, comfort, and trouble-free ownership, while also noting that many drivers feel confident counting on it in winter weather. The expert evaluation also emphasizes high marks for reliability and says the car is not expected to cost much to own over the long run. It also notes that the first scheduled maintenance visit is on the house.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that a well-used example may have accumulated wear that isn’t obvious without a careful inspection and service-history review.
What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Subaru Legacy?
At 58.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in a prior collision or shows uneven wear. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and whether the car’s safety and comfort features still work as intended. Because this model is often bought for all-weather confidence and daily practicality, you want to make sure the example you choose still feels solid and well cared for.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base 2.5i starts at $21,090, while the 2.5i Premium adds a 10-way power driver’s seat, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, a reversing camera, Bluetooth, and a better stereo with HD Radio, satellite radio, a USB port, an iPod connection, and an auxiliary audio input jack. The 2.5i Sport adds 18-inch aluminum wheels, fog lights, fake carbon fiber dashboard trim, a power sunroof, and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror with a Homelink universal garage door opener. The 2.5i Limited adds leather seats, woodgrain trim, dual-zone automatic climate control, a premium Harman Kardon audio system, and fancy gauges.
- Powertrain: Most models use a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine with 173 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque, paired with either a 6-speed manual in the base version or a CVT in other 2.5i models. The 3.6R Limited uses a 6-cylinder engine with 256 hp and 247 lb-ft of torque. The CVT is described as making the most of the 4-cylinder’s output and helping the car rarely feel underpowered.
- Safety package: EyeSight includes adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking, and lane departure warning. It is available on the 2.5i Premium and 2.5i Limited, but not on the 2.5i Sport.
- Infotainment: Subaru’s Starlink technology is included with the optional navigation system. The system is easy to pair with a phone and supports calling and music streaming, but it lacks natural voice recognition and the touchscreen can be unresponsive.
- Fuel efficiency: The 2.5i gets 24 mpg city, 32 mpg highway, and 27 mpg combined. The test car averaged 26.4 mpg in real-world driving.
Which 2014 Subaru Legacy trim should I buy?
The 2014 Subaru Legacy is offered in 5 trim levels: 2.5i, 2.5i Premium, 2.5i Sport, 2.5i Limited, 3.6R Limited.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The 2.5i is the least equipped choice, and the safety content makes clear that EyeSight is not available on the Sport trim, which also signals that lower trims may miss out on key driver-assistance tech.
- Sweet-spot trim: The 2.5i Premium is the best value pick because it adds the reversing camera, Bluetooth, upgraded audio, and EyeSight while staying below the more expensive luxury-oriented trims.
- Premium/top trim: The 2.5i Limited is the most upscale gas model, adding leather seats, woodgrain trim, dual-zone automatic climate control, and the premium Harman Kardon audio system.
- Off-road trim: None of the trims is positioned as an off-road choice.
EyeSight is available on the 2.5i Premium and 2.5i Limited, but not on the 2.5i Sport.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Subaru Legacy?

- Price trend: Prices are up 2.30% year-over-year.

What is the 2014 Subaru Legacy's resale value?
The current average of $8,895 sits slightly above last year's $8,695.
That upward move suggests the market has held up well for this model year, which is a positive sign if you plan to sell later. Strong demand can help support pricing, especially when shoppers are looking for a practical sedan with all-wheel drive, comfort, and efficiency. The fact that prices are still rising year over year also suggests buyers continue to value this car’s everyday usefulness.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

The 2014 Subaru Legacy earns an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ rating and a five-star overall rating from NHTSA.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
EyeSight is the named driver-assistance suite, and it includes adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking, and lane departure warning. It is available on the 2.5i Premium and 2.5i Limited, but not on the 2.5i Sport. The safety writeup also notes a three-star rating in the individual side-impact pole test, which is worth keeping in mind if safety is a top priority.
Should I buy a 2014 Subaru Legacy or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 27.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 58.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices are up 2.30% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The expert summary calls it a talented, fun-to-drive value pick with strong fuel economy, safety, comfort, and all-weather capability.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $10,836, the 2015 costs more than the current year's $8,895 average.
- It is bigger and more generously appointed.
The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2014 is the smarter buy because it combines strong owner satisfaction, solid expert praise, and a lower average price. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer, roomier sedan, the 2015 is the better secondary path for price-sensitive buyers who want a redesigned cabin and a more polished feel.
