CarGurus Analysis: 2014 Subaru Forester
overall

Summary
With 1,836 currently listed for sale and an average price of $10,015, 32.0% of 2014 Subaru Foresters for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2014 Subaru Forester 4.58 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.67 / 10.
63.1% of 2014 Forester models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2014 Subaru Forester stands out for the way it handles bad weather with confidence. Its all-wheel drive is described as clawing through snow and maintaining control in just about any level of accumulation on the road, which fits Subaru’s long-standing reputation for all-weather driving capability. It is also presented as a high-riding wagon with capability and versatility that exceed many other car-based crossovers, giving it a practical, go-anywhere character that has helped make the Forester a popular midsize, 5-passenger crossover.
That same familiar formula is part of the Forester’s appeal, but it can also make the 2014 model feel dated at times. Even so, it remains distinctive for buyers who value space, utility, and a reputation for reliability. Owner feedback reinforces that appeal, with drivers praising its spaciousness, enjoyable driving experience, smooth ride, and great fuel economy. Some owners, however, have noted that certain lower trim levels lack a solid feel, and there have been complaints about leather seat durability and the absence of navigation in some models.

Reviewed a 2014 Subaru Forester on Jan 23, 2024
I’m pleased with the car I purchased This model has lots of sleek features! The leather is high quality with beautiful stitching. Touch screen is perfect size. Your eyes don’t have to struggle to see the buttons. Therefore, you tend to keep your eyes on the road more! The lighting is soft & subtle! It makes for a relaxing drive. The 4WD is a must in the mountains! It takes some practice getting used to the steering! It’s truly a different experience than a FWD vehicle. Gas mileage is outstanding! Although, I make checking the oil a multiple time/day must! These are known for oil leaks (especially with high mileage)! When I stop @ the store or put gas in my car, I lift the hood! I keep an extra quart of oil in my trunk! It’s a small inconvenience that can help ensure life for your engine!

| Year-Round Low | $9,515 |
| Year-Round High | $10,286 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $10,235 |

There are 1,831 listings available, which suggests solid inventory for shoppers comparing prices and conditions.
Is the 2014 Subaru Forester a good car?
Yes — 4.58/5 from owners, and the expert rating is 6.67/10. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 9/10.
Drivers consistently praise its spaciousness, reliability, enjoyable driving experience, smooth ride, and great fuel economy. That lines up with the Forester’s practical, high-riding crossover setup and its appeal as a versatile 5-passenger vehicle. If you want a used SUV-like crossover that emphasizes utility and all-weather confidence over flash, this model year fits that brief well.
The market also shows 32.0% good or great deals, which gives you room to shop selectively.
Is the 2014 Subaru Forester reliable?
Owners rate it 4.58/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to reliability, spaciousness, enjoyable driving, smooth ride, and great fuel economy as recurring strengths. The expert evaluation also emphasizes the Forester’s ability to keep moving without fuss in snow, rain, mud, and ice, which reinforces its dependable character in harsh conditions. The cost-effectiveness discussion adds that it can trudge through snow and ice while delivering useful everyday value.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about core capability and more about finding a well-kept example with intact interior and tech components.
What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Subaru Forester?
At 62.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of body condition, interior wear, and any signs of prior repair quality. Because some owners have reported leather seat durability concerns and missing navigation in certain models, it’s smart to focus on the condition and equipment level of the specific car you’re considering. If you want the best ownership experience, compare trim content closely and make sure the features you care about are actually present.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base 2.5i starts with a simpler setup, while the Premium version adds a massive sunroof and roof rails. Owner feedback also notes that some lower trims can feel less solid, so the better-equipped trims may be more satisfying if you want a more substantial feel.
- Powertrain: The 2.5i uses a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter boxer 4-cylinder with 170 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque, paired with either a 6-speed manual or an available CVT. If you want more punch, the 2.0XT uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter boxer 4-cylinder with 250 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque.
- Safety package: Subaru EyeSight is the named driver-assistance suite, and it uses cameras and sensors to warn you about lane departure or an imminent crash. It is part of an option package for most trims, so don’t assume every used example has it.
- Infotainment: The Premium trim’s touchscreen handles stereo and navigation, plus AM/FM/XM radio and Bluetooth streaming audio. The system is dated for the model year, and the screen and icons are described as small and easy to mis-hit.
- Fuel efficiency: The 2.5i with a 6-speed manual is rated at 22/29/24 mpg, the test model is rated at 24/32/27 mpg, and the turbo XT trims return 23/28/25 mpg.
Which 2014 Subaru Forester trim should I buy?
The 2014 Subaru Forester is offered in 4 trim levels: 2.5i, 2.5i Premium, 2.0XT Premium, 2.0XT Touring.
Here's the short version:
- 2.5i: This is the simplest entry point, and it makes sense if you want the Forester’s core all-wheel-drive capability at the lowest price. It gives you the basic formula, but the owner feedback about lower trims lacking a solid feel makes it the least appealing choice if you can stretch a bit.
- 2.5i Premium: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds a massive sunroof, roof rails, touchscreen audio/navigation, Bluetooth streaming audio, heated front seats, and the features highlighted in the cost-effectiveness discussion. If you want the strongest mix of value and everyday usefulness, this is the one to target.
- 2.0XT Premium: Choose this if you want more power, since it brings the turbocharged 2.0-liter engine and the up-rated X-Mode handling system. It suits you best if you live in warmer weather but still want stronger acceleration and extra capability.
- 2.0XT Touring: This is the range-topper, and it layers the turbo setup with the most upscale equipment in the lineup. It makes sense if you want the most fully equipped Forester and are willing to pay for it.
Subaru EyeSight is optional on most trims, so verify whether a specific used example includes it.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Subaru Forester?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without feeling rushed.
- Deal availability: 32.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,831 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.28% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 62.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $9,515, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2014 Subaru Forester's resale value?
The current average of $10,001 sits slightly below last year's $10,235.
That softer pricing suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point today. For a future seller, it also means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and equipment rather than on broad market appreciation. Well-kept examples with desirable features should hold up better than neglected ones.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.58/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2014 Subaru Forester safe?
The 2014 Subaru Forester is described as an incredibly safe vehicle, and it earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Its standard safety equipment includes 7 airbags, a reinforced safety structure, vehicle dynamics control, antilock brakes, and electronic brakeforce distribution. Subaru EyeSight is the named driver-assistance suite, and it uses cameras and sensors to warn you if you veer outside your lane or if a crash is imminent. It is optional on most trims, so you should confirm whether a used example has it.
The main caveat is that EyeSight is not standard across the lineup, so safety equipment can vary by trim and option package.
Should I buy a 2014 Subaru Forester or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 32.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 62.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.28% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.58/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It emphasizes all-weather capability and practical utility, with expert commentary highlighting its confidence in snow, rain, mud, and ice.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $11,337, the 2015 costs more than the current year's $10,001 average.
- It adds a Top Safety Pick from IIHS and stronger value-focused positioning.
The bottom line: If you want the better buy today, the 2014 makes sense because pricing is softer and inventory is healthy. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer-feeling safety/value package, the 2015 is the cleaner upgrade path. For price-sensitive buyers, the 2014 remains the more attractive shopping target.
