How much does the 2014 Subaru Forester cost?

Prices have softened 3.32% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,857 listings available, which suggests you have a solid amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2014 Subaru Forester a good car?

Yes — the 2014 Subaru Forester earns a 4.6/5 user rating and a 6.7/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 9/10. Owners consistently praise its spaciousness, reliability, and enjoyable driving experience, while the overview also points to strong all-weather capability and practical versatility. That makes it a strong fit if you want a midsize, 5-passenger crossover that leans toward usefulness and confidence in rough weather rather than flash. With 32.1% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still offers some attractive opportunities.

Is the 2014 Subaru Forester reliable?

Owners rate it 4.6/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. User feedback highlights reliability, and the review summary also points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience for many drivers. The expert driving notes reinforce that sense of durability by describing the Forester as a vehicle that can handle snow, mud, and ice without fuss. If you buy used, the main long-term risk is finding a neglected example, so condition and maintenance history matter a lot.

What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Subaru Forester?

At 63.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually strong. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the cabin and controls show the wear you’d expect from the mileage. Because some owners mention lower-trim shortcomings and durability complaints, it’s smart to verify that the specific car you’re considering feels well cared for.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base 2.5i starts at $21,995, while the 2.5i Premium adds a massive sunroof and roof rails. The XT trims bring larger 18-inch wheels and a more aggressive front-end appearance, and the cabin stays simple and straightforward with plain 3-dial climate controls.
• Powertrain: The 2.5i trims use a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter boxer 4-cylinder with 170 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque, paired with either a 6-speed manual or an available CVT. If you want more punch, the 2.0XT trims use a turbocharged 2.0-liter boxer 4-cylinder with 250 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque.
• Safety package: Subaru EyeSight is the named driver-assistance suite, and it uses cameras and sensors to warn you if you drift out of your lane or if a crash is imminent. It is optional on most trims, so you should confirm whether the specific vehicle has it.
• Infotainment: The Premium trim’s touchscreen handles stereo and navigation, plus AM/FM/XM satellite radio and Bluetooth streaming audio. The system is dated for the model year, and the screen and icons are small.
• Fuel efficiency: The 2.5i with a 6-speed manual is rated at 22/29/24 mpg, while the test model is rated at 24/32/27 mpg. The Turbo XT trims return 23/28/25 mpg.

Which 2014 Subaru Forester trim should I buy?

The 2014 Subaru Forester is offered in 6 trim levels: 2.5i, 2.5i Premium, 2.5i Limited, 2.5i Touring, 2.0XT Premium, 2.0XT Touring.

Here's the short version:

• 2.5i: This is the entry point if you want the Forester’s core all-wheel-drive capability at the lowest price. It gives you the basic formula, but the content points to a more stripped-down feel than the better-equipped trims.
• 2.5i Premium: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the massive sunroof and roof rails while keeping the Forester’s practical character intact. It also brings the touchscreen interface for stereo and navigation.
• 2.5i Limited: This trim is a step up if you want more equipment and the X-Mode system for more inclement terrain. It suits you if you want a more complete daily driver without moving into turbo territory.
• 2.5i Touring: This is the most upscale non-turbo choice and also includes X-Mode. Pick it if you want the most comfort and convenience from the standard engine lineup.
• 2.0XT Premium: This is the choice if you want the turbocharged 2.0-liter engine and X-Mode, plus a more spirited drive. It makes the most sense if performance matters more than fuel economy.
• 2.0XT Touring: This is the top trim if you want the turbo engine with the most upscale equipment. It is the most expensive route, so it makes sense mainly if you want the strongest powertrain and the fullest feature set.

The safety package is optional on most trims, so verify whether the Forester you’re considering includes Subaru EyeSight.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Subaru Forester?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right listing.

• Deal availability: 32.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,857 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.32% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 63.2% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $9,514, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2014 Subaru Forester's resale value?

The current average of $9,655 sits slightly below last year's $9,986.

That softer pricing suggests the Forester has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help if you buy now and later resell from a lower entry point. For a future seller, that means your upside is more about buying well and keeping the vehicle in strong condition than expecting the market to rise. The model’s practical reputation and broad appeal should still help support demand, especially for clean, well-maintained examples.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2014 Subaru Forester safe?

The 2014 Subaru Forester is described as an incredibly safe vehicle, and its standard safety structure is backed by 7 airbags, vehicle dynamics control, antilock brakes, and electronic brakeforce distribution.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Subaru EyeSight is the named driver-assistance suite, and it uses cameras and sensors to warn you if you drift outside your lane or if a crash is imminent. It is optional on most trims, so you should check whether the specific vehicle includes it. The main caveat is that this safety tech is not standard across the lineup.

Should I buy a 2014 Subaru Forester or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2014 if:

• 32.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 63.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.32% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2014 redesign emphasizes all-weather capability and practicality, but the cabin tech feels dated.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $11,086, the 2015 costs more than the current year's $9,655 average.
• It adds a Top Safety Pick from IIHS and arrives fresh off the redesign.

The bottom line: If you want the lower purchase price and can live with older tech, the 2014 is the value play. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer-feeling safety profile and a slightly more polished ownership story, the 2015 is the better alternative.
