Summary
With 421 currently listed for sale and an average price of $13,578, 31.1% of 2014 Nissan Frontiers for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2014 Nissan Frontier 4.4 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.5 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2014 Nissan Frontier stands out for its rugged look and feel, which gives it a more traditional truck character than many buyers expect from a small pickup. It also has a playful side: the Frontier may suit weekend surfers or off-roading excursions, making it appealing to drivers who want a compact truck for recreation rather than heavy-duty work.
At the same time, its limitations are part of the story. The Frontier gets awful mileage, and it has limited cargo capability and questionable value, which makes it a weaker choice for people who need to haul lots of stuff often. That tradeoff helps explain why it can make sense as a simple, rugged truck for occasional use, but not as a do-everything utility vehicle.

How much does the 2014 Nissan Frontier cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $13,545 |
| Year-Round Low | $13,044 |
| Year-Round High | $14,091 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $14,109 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −4.00% |
Prices have softened 4.00% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 422 listings available, which gives you a decent amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
Is the 2014 Nissan Frontier a good car?
Generally — the 2014 Nissan Frontier earns a 4.4/5 user rating and a 6.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Performance at 9/10.
Drivers commonly praise its reliability, good fuel economy, and decent interior design. The Frontier’s rugged look and feel also fit the use case for weekend surfers or off-roading excursions, so it makes the most sense if you want a compact truck for recreation rather than heavy-duty work. Even so, the market shows 27.0% good or great deals, which suggests you may have room to shop carefully.
Is the 2014 Nissan Frontier reliable?
Owners rate it 4.4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to reliability and a trouble-free ownership experience as recurring positives, and the expert evaluation also describes favorable quality and reliability ratings. The Frontier’s straightforward truck setup can be a plus if you want something dependable and easy to live with, and the cost-effectiveness notes point to a favorable quality-and-reliability profile. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that condition varies a lot, so a neglected example can erase much of the truck’s appeal.
What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Nissan Frontier?
At 64% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report before you get too far into the process, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection if the truck has any signs of prior damage, neglect, or heavy use. Focus on overall condition, because value concerns in the market often come down to how well a specific truck has been maintained and whether it has been repaired properly.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Frontier comes in 5 trim levels: S, SV, Desert Runner, PRO-4X and SL. The S is the most basic version, while the SV adds more everyday convenience, the Desert Runner adds styling and off-road-themed hardware, the PRO-4X is the most off-road focused, and the SL leans more toward comfort and convenience than trail equipment.
- Powertrain: You can equip a Frontier with a 4- or 6-cylinder engine and rear-wheel or 4-wheel drive in various configurations. The 4.0-liter V6 is described as stout and energetic, while the standard 2.5-liter 4-cylinder is more basic and comes with lower towing capacity.
- Safety package: The truck includes antilock brakes, stability control, a limited-slip differential, rear parking sensors and a back-up camera. The 4WD model gets a 4-star rollover rating, while RWD models get a 3-star rating.
- Infotainment: The optional NissanConnect system includes Bluetooth smartphone pairing with streaming audio, a text-messaging assistant, live traffic updates, gas prices at nearby stations, mobile apps, navigation, voice commands, satellite or Internet radio, and a USB port plus an auxiliary audio input jack. The touchscreen is rather small and can suffer from sun glare.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA-rated combined figure is 17 mpg for the V6 test vehicle, and the expert test vehicle averaged 14.6 mpg. The 4-cylinder is described as more basic, but no separate fuel-economy figure is stated for it.
Which 2014 Nissan Frontier trim should I buy?
The 2014 Nissan Frontier is offered in 5 trim levels: S, SV, Desert Runner, PRO-4X and SL.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the entry point, and it is the most stripped-down choice with a 4-cylinder engine, a manual transmission and 15-inch steel wheels. If you want the lowest-cost way into the Frontier, this is the trim to start with, but it is also the one with the fewest conveniences unless you add the S Preferred package.
- SV: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds 16-inch alloy wheels, power accessories, a tilt steering wheel, a 4.3-inch color radio display, satellite radio, a USB port and an auxiliary audio input jack. If you want a more usable daily driver without jumping into the pricier off-road trims, this is the smart middle ground.
- Desert Runner: This trim is for you if you want a truck that looks more rugged and adds fog lights, Bilstein shock absorbers and off-road tires while staying rear-wheel drive. It is more about style and light trail flavor than full off-road hardware.
- PRO-4X: This is the trim to choose if off-road capability is your priority, because it adds off-road tires, Bilstein shocks, a locking rear differential, underbody skid plates and automatic headlights. The Luxury package can add a sunroof, roof rack with cross bars, leather upholstery, power-adjustable front seats and NissanConnect.
- SL: This trim keeps much of the comfort and convenience content from the PRO-4X Luxury package but drops the off-road equipment, then adds 18-inch alloy wheels and side steps. It makes sense if you want a more upscale Frontier without paying for trail-focused hardware.
The safety content also notes that the Frontier is fairly basic by modern standards, so if advanced driver-assistance features matter to you, you should pay close attention to equipment differences before choosing a trim.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Nissan Frontier?
The market looks moderately favorable for selective buyers right now.
- Deal availability: 27.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 422 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.00% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 64.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $13,044, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2014 Nissan Frontier's resale value?
The current average of $13,545 sits slightly below last year's $14,109.
That decline suggests the Frontier has softened in the market, which can be good news if you are buying now but less helpful if you plan to sell soon. For a future seller, the key takeaway is that pricing discipline matters: a truck in strong condition and with clean history should hold up better than one with damage or neglect. The current range also shows that buyers are still comparing value closely, so presentation and maintenance records can make a real difference.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2014 Nissan Frontier safe?
The Frontier earns Good ratings from IIHS for moderate overlap frontal impact, side impact and roof crush protection, and an Acceptable rating for rear-impact seat and head restraint protection. It also earns a four-star rollover rating from NHTSA on 4WD models, while RWD models get a three-star rating.
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
The safety equipment is fairly basic, with antilock brakes, stability control, a limited-slip differential, rear parking sensors and a back-up camera. That means you should not expect the kind of advanced driver-assistance suite you would find in newer trucks. The main caveat is that the truck’s age shows in its safety tech, so you should weigh its solid crash-test results against its limited modern safety features.
Should I buy a 2014 Nissan Frontier or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 27.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 64% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.00% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The Frontier may work perfectly for weekend surfers or off-roading excursions, but it comes up short for those who need to haul lots of stuff lots of the time.
The bottom line: If you want a simple, rugged compact truck and you can live with its compromises, the 2014 Frontier is worth a close look. If your priority is maximum utility, better fuel economy, or a more modern feature set, you may want to compare it with a different year or a larger truck. For price-sensitive buyers, the current softness in pricing makes this a reasonable time to shop carefully and focus on condition.
