CarGurus Analysis: 2014 Jeep Wrangler
overall

Summary
With 4,131 currently listed for sale and an average price of $15,603.00, 29.5% of 2014 Jeep Wranglers for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2014 Jeep Wrangler 4.62 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7 / 10.
63.3% of 2014 Wrangler models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2014 Jeep Wrangler stands out because it is built to go just about anywhere at just about any time, and it does so at a surprisingly affordable price. That combination makes it appealing to buyers who want a rugged American icon with real off-road ability rather than a polished everyday crossover.
Its biggest strength is also its biggest tradeoff: the Wrangler’s uncompromised off-roading capability comes with all kinds of compromise during the daily drive. It demands attention all the time, and that can make the experience feel brilliant to some drivers and ridiculous to others. For shoppers who value adventure and capability more than comfort, refinement, or easy commuting, that character is exactly what makes it distinctive.

I am totally impressed with the Jeep Wrangler Sahara Unlimited. It is more than I expected. The vehicle has a very new feeling and seems showroom fresh. The leather is still great smelling and looks new. The Jeep is easy to see out of, despite being a four door. The driving feels strong and stable and the visibility in all directions is easy. The controls are within easy reach and it has a great many cup holders and plug ins for electronics. This was a great purchase. I specifically wanted a Wrangler and I am very pleased. There are no disappointments.

Reviewed a 2014 Jeep Sport 4WD on May 3, 2014
This is the most fun vehicle I've ever driven. It has plenty of power to get around and enough to be fun off-road, but it is by no means fast. It takes a while to unzip the windows and put the top down, but it gets easier and quicker the more you do it. It brings a smile to my face every time I drive it. Off-roading with a 2" lift and 35" Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac tires, it was able to conquer most obstacles with ease. Modifications so far include Superlift 2" spacer lift, JKS adjustable track bars, Magnaflow exhaust, 315/75-16 Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac tires, 16" Level8 wheels, Body Armor 4x4 side bars, Rugged Ridge tail lamp guards, and carpet removed and floor sprayed with truck bed liner.

Is the 2014 Jeep Wrangler a good car?
Yes — the 4.62/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction, and the expert rating is 7.00/10. The model scores 10/10 across Look and feel and Performance.
Owners consistently praise the Wrangler’s ruggedness, off-road capability, and fun driving experience. The overview also makes clear that you’re buying a vehicle built for serious adventure rather than a polished commuter, which fits the feedback about its distinctive character and versatility.
With 26.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively if you want the right combination of price and equipment.
Is the 2014 Jeep Wrangler reliable?
Owners rate it 4.62/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner summary points to a vehicle that many drivers find dependable in the ways that matter to them: ruggedness, capability, and a driving experience they can count on for adventure use. The expert review also notes that customer complaints have dwindled since Jeep’s earlier reboot, which supports the idea that this model year is more settled than older versions.
The cost-effectiveness notes also frame the Wrangler as a vehicle that holds onto value well, which usually reflects a product buyers continue to trust. For used shoppers, the main long-term ownership risk is that durability and satisfaction can depend heavily on how hard the Jeep was used off road and how well it was maintained.
What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Jeep Wrangler?
At 63.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a close inspection of body panels, underbody components, and signs of hard use. Because this model is often bought for off-road driving, condition matters as much as mileage, and you’ll want to pay attention to wear that could come from trail use, modifications, or neglected maintenance.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The standard Wrangler lineup includes a short-wheelbase 2-door and a long-wheelbase 4-door, and the base setup is intentionally spartan. You get the core Wrangler formula, but the content makes clear that the stripped-down versions leave out much of the comfort and convenience equipment that more expensive versions add.
- Powertrain: Every version uses a 3.6-liter V6 with 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, paired with either a 6-speed manual or 5-speed automatic. The engine is described as well suited to the Wrangler’s mission, and it returns 18 mpg in combined driving.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes dual front airbags, antilock brakes with brake assist, hill-start assist, all-speed traction control with a special 4-Lo setting, stability control with electronic roll mitigation, and trailer sway control. Front-seat side-impact airbags are optional.
- Infotainment: Available tech includes a 6.5-inch color touchscreen, Bluetooth connectivity, navigation, and a premium audio system. The content does not mention wireless smartphone integration or over-the-air updates.
- Fuel efficiency: The Wrangler is rated at 18 mpg in combined driving, and a loaded example returned 17.1 mpg during a week of driving.
Which 2014 Jeep Wrangler trim should I buy?
The 2014 Jeep Wrangler is offered in 4 trim levels: Sport 2-door, Wrangler Unlimited Dragon Edition, Rubicon, and Rubicon X.
Here's the short version:
- Sport 2-door: This is the entry point if you want the Wrangler experience at the lowest price. It keeps the core formula intact, and the content shows it can be equipped for serious trail use with the Tire and Wheel Group, making it the best-value choice for buyers who care most about capability per dollar.
- Wrangler Unlimited Dragon Edition: This version adds more equipment and a softer, more composed on-road feel, along with distinctive styling touches. It suits you if you want a more feature-rich Wrangler and don’t mind giving up some of the rough-and-ready edge.
- Rubicon: This is the trim to target if off-road performance is your priority. It adds the hardware that makes the Wrangler especially capable on difficult terrain, including locking differentials, a sway-bar disconnect system, and a Rock-Trac transfer case.
- Rubicon X: This is the most heavily equipped off-road-focused version in the content, adding steel bumpers, larger rock rails, and winch-ready hardware. Choose it if you want the most serious trail-ready setup described here.
Front-seat side-impact airbags are optional.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Jeep Wrangler?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without expecting deep discounts everywhere.
- Deal availability: 26.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 4,165 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.04% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 63.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $15,662.30, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2014 Jeep Wrangler's resale value?
The current average of $15,661 sits slightly below last year's $16,847.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer today but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. On the other hand, the Wrangler’s strong owner satisfaction and enduring appeal help support demand over time.
Because buyers continue to value the Wrangler’s identity, capability, and image, well-kept examples should remain easier to move than many niche SUVs. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.62/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2014 Jeep Wrangler safe?
The standard Wrangler 2-door gets a Good rating for moderate overlap frontal impact, a Marginal rating for small overlap frontal impact and rear-impact injury prevention, and a Poor rating in the side-impact test. The Wrangler Unlimited 4-door improves to Marginal in side-impact protection.
It earns a 3/10 safety score from our experts.
The safety equipment includes dual front airbags, antilock brakes with brake assist, hill-start assist, traction control with a 4-Lo setting, stability control with electronic roll mitigation, and trailer sway control. Front-seat side-impact airbags are optional.
The crash-test results are the main caveat here, especially the Poor side-impact result on the 2-door and the Marginal result on the 4-door. If safety is a top priority, you should weigh those ratings carefully against the Wrangler’s strengths elsewhere.
Should I buy a 2014 Jeep Wrangler or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 26.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 63.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.04% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.62/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The expert review emphasizes its unmatched off-road capability and affordable entry price.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $16,655, the 2015 costs more than the current year's $15,661 average.
- It adds an upgraded sound system and more editions to choose from.
The bottom line: If you want the lower price and the classic Wrangler formula, the 2014 is the better value play. If you’re willing to spend more for a slightly fresher take and extra variety, the 2015 is the better alternative.
