CarGurus Analysis: 2014 Honda Pilot
overall

Summary
With 108 currently listed for sale near New York, NY and an average price of $10,027, 22.2% of 2014 Honda Pilots for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2014 Honda Pilot 4.44 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.83 / 10.
56.5% of 2014 Pilot models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2014 Honda Pilot stands out as a practical midsize crossover SUV built around space and utility. It has lots of room for people, lots of room for cargo, and lots of room to stash all your stuff, making it the kind of vehicle that prioritizes carrying capacity over flash. The overall impression is that form follows function: it is designed to fit as many passengers and as much gear as possible while still staying within owners’ budgets and garages.
That focus on usefulness is also what makes the 2014 Honda Pilot appealing to buyers who need a family-size vehicle rather than simply want one. The source describes it as not especially pretty or technologically sophisticated, but still easy to love because it does the basics so well. Owner feedback reinforces that appeal by pointing to spacious seating, reliability, comfort, a high safety rating, and versatility for carrying a larger number of passengers. At the same time, some owners have reported hard shifting and a wide turn radius, so its strengths are practical rather than polished.

I cant say enough about this vehicle. Its my truck!! I currently have a 2009 and I will be upgrading to this model. The safety rating is high , and very comfortable at that. The cargo space stands out above all others, all adults and children in carseats have space. Most vesitile vehicle seat related, cant beat 8 seats!! Love this vehicle!!

The pilot is a solid vehicle if you take care of it. My sister in law bought one new in 2003 and still has it. My son has a 2013 with 111,000 miles. If you take of it and do the required maintenance it will last well over 200,000 miles. Dont skip the timing belt interval this is a interface engine and will be junk if the belt breaks.

The Pilot seems to be in good condition. That said, it had been involved in a more serious accident which gave me reason to hold off on its purchase. In addition there were approximately $2,000 in fees that made me walk away.

I sold Hondas for 5 years and the only thing I would change is the brand of tires. I would go with Michelins which is what came on them from the factory when I was selling them.

How much does the 2014 Honda Pilot cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $10,871 |
| Year-Round Low | $10,622 |
| Year-Round High | $11,272 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $11,275 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −3.59% |
Prices have softened 3.59% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 768 listings available, which suggests you have a workable amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2014 Honda Pilot a good car?
Generally — 4.44/5 from owners points to strong satisfaction with this model year. The expert rating is 6.83/10, and the model scores 8/10 across Performance, Cost effectiveness, and Safety.
Owners repeatedly praise the spacious seating, comfort, reliability, and versatility for carrying more passengers and cargo. The Pilot’s family-first layout fits buyers who need practical space and utility more than style or cutting-edge tech.
Only 31.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so you may need to shop selectively to find the best value.
Is the 2014 Honda Pilot reliable?
Owners rate it 4.44/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback also points to reliability, and the broader review summary reinforces that this is a vehicle many drivers feel they can count on for family duty. The expert evaluation adds that reliability is expected to be better than average, which supports the Pilot’s reputation for dependable ownership.
Honda also positions the Pilot as an affordable proposition to own, with cost-of-ownership strength helping offset its age and simpler feature set. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright durability and more about finding a well-maintained example that has been treated consistently over time.
What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Honda Pilot?
At 55.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing has any accident history or incomplete service records. Focus your inspection on signs of wear, repair quality, and how the vehicle drives, since condition matters more than mileage alone on an older family SUV.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The LX is the least expensive version and is the most basic, while the EX adds 18-inch aluminum wheels, a 10-way power driver’s seat, remote keyless entry, and a security system. The EX-L adds leather seats, heated front seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a power sunroof, and a power tailgate with separate liftglass, while the Touring adds navigation and a rear-seat entertainment system along with a premium audio system and memory for the driver’s seat. If you want the best value, the EX-L is the trim that most clearly balances equipment and price.
- Powertrain: Every version uses a 3.5-liter V6 with 250 hp and 253 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 5-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive is standard, and 4WD is available with a system that can send power rearward as needed and lock for extra traction at low speeds.
- Safety package: Honda’s Advanced Compatibility Engineering body structure is standard, and the Pilot’s crash-test performance is a strength. The available safety tech is limited, though, and the model lacks many modern driver-assistance features that you may expect in a family SUV.
- Infotainment: Standard equipment includes Bluetooth, a USB port, triple-zone climate control, and a basic reversing camera with poor resolution. Navigation and an upgraded camera are available on the EX-L, while the Touring adds a premium sound system, video input jacks, and a 115-volt power outlet.
- Fuel efficiency: The Touring 4WD is rated at 17 mpg city, 24 highway, and 20 combined, and the source notes that skipping 4WD improves each figure by 1 mpg.
Which 2014 Honda Pilot trim should I buy?
The 2014 Honda Pilot is offered in 4 trim levels: LX, EX, EX-L, Touring.
Here's the short version:
- LX: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the lowest purchase price and can live with the most basic equipment. It gets the Pilot’s core space and utility without the added comfort and convenience features found higher up the range.
- EX: This trim adds the most obvious everyday upgrades, including a power driver’s seat, remote keyless entry, a security system, and 18-inch wheels. It is a sensible step up if you want a better-equipped Pilot without moving too far up in price.
- EX-L: This is the best-value choice for many shoppers because it adds leather seats, heated front seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a power sunroof, and a power tailgate. It also opens the door to navigation or rear-seat entertainment, which makes it the most balanced family-friendly trim.
- Touring: Choose this if you want the most content from the factory, including navigation, rear-seat entertainment, premium audio, memory for the driver’s seat, and unique wheels. It is the right pick if you want a fully loaded Pilot and are willing to pay for it.
The safety content notes that the Pilot earned a Top Safety Pick designation, but it had not been tested in the newer small-overlap frontal-impact test at the time.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Honda Pilot?
This is a moderate market, so you can shop selectively without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 31.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 768 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.59% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 55.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $10,622, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2014 Honda Pilot's resale value?
The current average of $10,871 sits slightly below last year's $11,275.
That softer pricing trend suggests the Pilot has already absorbed some of its depreciation, which can help future resale stability if you buy at the right price. For a later seller, the key advantage is that this model year already sits in a value-oriented part of the market, so there may be less downside left than there was a year ago.
Demand should remain supported by the Pilot’s practical strengths, especially its space, comfort, and family usefulness. Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.44/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2014 Honda Pilot safe?
The 2014 Pilot earns a Top Safety Pick designation from IIHS and receives an overall four-star rating from NHTSA, with no individual assessment below four stars.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Honda’s Advanced Compatibility Engineering body structure is standard, and the Pilot’s safety story is helped by its strong crash-test results. The caveat is that it lacks many modern driver-assistance technologies, so you should not expect the kind of active safety suite found in newer family SUVs.
Should I buy a 2014 Honda Pilot or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 31.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 55.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.59% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.44/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2014 Pilot offers strong practicality, solid crash-test performance, and a value-focused ownership proposition.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $11,603, the 2015 costs more than the current year's $10,871 average.
- It adds a more up-to-date family-SUV presentation and remains focused on spacious, 3-row utility.
The bottom line: If you want the better value play, the 2014 is the smarter buy because it delivers the Pilot’s core strengths at a lower average price. If you can stretch your budget and want a slightly newer version, the 2015 is the cleaner alternative, but the 2014 remains the more price-efficient path for shoppers who care most about space, utility, and overall ownership value.
