CarGurus Analysis: 2014 Ford Focus
overall

Summary
With 1,194 currently listed for sale and an average price of $6,995, 26.5% of 2014 Ford Focus models for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2014 Ford Focus 4 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2014 Ford Focus stands out by feeling more substantial than a typical economy car. Its solid chassis and responsive suspension give it a composed, engaging character, while its still-fresh look helps it avoid the dated feel that can affect compact cars after a few years on the market. The Focus also benefits from the momentum of a major redesign, and its widespread presence on roads speaks to how familiar and established it has become.
For buyers, the appeal is a mix of style, efficiency, and everyday livability. Drivers generally praise its stylish design, excellent fuel economy, good sound system, and comfortable front seats. At the same time, the car’s recurring transmission issues are a notable drawback and can raise reliability concerns, especially for shoppers considering an automatic. That balance of strong driving manners and practical strengths, tempered by caution around transmission problems, is what makes the 2014 Ford Focus distinctive.

Stay clear of the Ford Focus SE 2014 -2018. Transmission is a ticking time bomb. Very unreliable. TCM among other transmission issues. Left me stranded more than once. Thank God I had USAA roadside support. Finally got fed up with it, trade it in for KIA RIO S.

It has good features. Lane change alerts would be good, better than some small cars, like the Sonic

I like how it looks and handles. It is very quiet and very smooth, especially around corners and over pot holes. I am very impressed overall with both the feel and maintenance and would definitely recommend it to anyone. Love it!

This is the first hatchback I have ever owned. This car handles pretty good and great fuel economy. I have always owned mustangs so it was very different owing this car. Over all this is a great car. The mods are out there to improve it and the market is still growing.

Owner feedback repeatedly points to the car being dependable in the ways that matter most to many shoppers, especially when it comes to everyday use, fuel economy, and value for money. The expert drive notes that the chassis and suspension feel stout and confidence-inspiring, which supports the sense that the car is built to handle regular use well.
That said, the recurring transmission complaints are the main long-term ownership risk for used buyers, so you should pay close attention to how the car drives and whether it has a clean service history.
What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Ford Focus?
At 62.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering an automatic. Focus on transmission behavior, braking feel, tire condition, and signs of uneven wear or prior repair work. If possible, test the car in stop-and-go traffic, since that’s where drivability issues are most likely to show up.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Titanium trim adds a more upscale equipment mix, including the 10-speaker Sony sound system, navigation, dual-zone automatic climate control, keyless entry and start, a rear-view camera, and power heated mirrors. The base S and SE trims are more basic, and the safety content notes that they use rear drum brakes rather than the four-wheel discs found on higher trims.
- Powertrain: The main setup uses a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated inline 4-cylinder with 160 hp and 146 lb-ft of torque, paired with a dual-clutch 6-speed automatic. The content also notes an optional 5-speed manual, and it says the dual-clutch can feel hesitant or shuddery in traffic.
- Safety package: Seven airbags come standard, including a driver’s knee airbag. The car also earned a full 5-star overall score from NHTSA, with 5-star ratings in all tests except frontal passenger crash and rollover, where it received 4 stars. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave it its highest rating of Good in all tests.
- Infotainment: The Titanium’s tech setup centers on Ford Sync and MyFord Touch with an 8-inch touchscreen, navigation, and the Sony audio system. The content also notes that the interface can be clunky and distracting to use while driving.
- Fuel efficiency: The dual-clutch automatic returns 27 mpg city and 37 mpg highway, while the manual drops 1 mpg on both ends.
Which 2014 Ford Focus trim should I buy?
The 2014 Ford Focus is offered in 1 trim level: Titanium.
Here's the short version:
The Titanium is the trim that best captures what this model does well, because it layers in the strongest mix of comfort, tech, and premium-feeling features. It’s the best fit if you want the most complete version of the car and value the upgraded audio, navigation, and convenience equipment.
The safety content also notes that S and SE trims use rear drum brakes, while higher trims get four-wheel discs, so if braking hardware matters to you, that’s an important distinction to keep in mind.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Ford Focus?

- Deal availability: 27.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,186 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.77% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 62.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $6,825, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2014 Ford Focus's resale value?
The current average of $6,984 sits slightly below last year's $7,110.
That softer pricing trend suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point. For a future seller, it also means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and service history rather than just model-year appeal.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Should I buy a 2014 Ford Focus or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 27.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 62.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.77% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2014 Focus combines a stout chassis with strong safety results and a fresh redesign-era feel.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $7,584, the 2015 costs more than the current year's $6,984 average.
- It brings a more sophisticated, European-influenced driving character.
The bottom line: If you want the lower-priced option with strong safety and a more engaging feel, the 2014 is the better starting point. If you’re willing to spend more for a slightly more polished driving character, the 2015 is the alternative to compare first.
