CarGurus Analysis: 2014 Ford Focus
overall

Summary
With 1,168 currently listed for sale and an average price of $7,091.00, 26.7% of 2014 Ford Focus models for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2014 Ford Focus 4 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.
63.8% of 2014 Focus models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2014 Ford Focus stands out by feeling more substantial than a typical economy car. Its solid chassis and responsive suspension give it a composed, engaging character, while its still-fresh look helps it avoid the dated feel that can affect compact cars after a few years on the market. That combination makes it appealing to buyers who want a small car that does not feel stripped down or purely utilitarian.
It also benefits from the momentum of a redesign that kept it looking current among strong competitors. With more than 10 million examples rolling down the world’s highways, the Focus is a familiar sight, and its broad popularity adds to its appeal as a practical everyday choice. Owner feedback reinforces that image, with praise for its stylish design, excellent fuel economy, good features, and comfortable front seats.
At the same time, the 2014 Ford Focus is not without drawbacks. Recurring transmission issues have been reported, and those concerns can affect confidence in the car’s long-term reliability. For shoppers, that means the Focus can be attractive for its driving feel and efficiency, but it is also a model that deserves careful attention to its transmission history.

Stay clear of the Ford Focus SE 2014 -2018. Transmission is a ticking time bomb. Very unreliable. TCM among other transmission issues. Left me stranded more than once. Thank God I had USAA roadside support. Finally got fed up with it, trade it in for KIA RIO S.

It has good features. Lane change alerts would be good, better than some small cars, like the Sonic

I like how it looks and handles. It is very quiet and very smooth, especially around corners and over pot holes. I am very impressed overall with both the feel and maintenance and would definitely recommend it to anyone. Love it!

This is the first hatchback I have ever owned. This car handles pretty good and great fuel economy. I have always owned mustangs so it was very different owing this car. Over all this is a great car. The mods are out there to improve it and the market is still growing.

Owners rate it 4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback repeatedly points to reliability concerns tied to recurring transmission issues, even while praising the car’s fuel economy, features, and everyday value. The expert drive notes that the dual-clutch transmission can hunt and shudder in traffic, which reinforces the need to pay close attention to how the car behaves on a test drive. The cost-effectiveness commentary also suggests the transmission may be more of a headache than a help for many drivers. For used buyers, the biggest long-term ownership risk is transmission-related trouble, so condition and service history matter a lot.
What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Ford Focus?
At 62.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has any accident history or signs of uneven wear. Focus on body condition, repair quality, and how the transmission behaves during stop-and-go driving and highway acceleration. A careful test drive should help you judge whether the car feels sorted or whether it shows the kind of hesitation and shuddering that can become expensive later.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Titanium trim adds a more upscale feel with features like the handling package, 18-inch alloys, navigation, dual-zone automatic climate control, Ford Sync, MyFord Touch, a rear-view camera, power heated mirrors, keyless entry and start, and the upgraded Sony sound system. Base S and SE trims are more basic, and the safety content notes that they use rear drum brakes rather than the 4-wheel discs found on other trims.
- Powertrain: The standard setup uses a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder with 160 hp and 146 lb-ft of torque, paired with a dual-clutch 6-speed PowerShift automatic. A 5-speed manual is also mentioned, and the car can also be had in full-electric and turbocharged flavors.
- Safety package: Seven airbags come standard, including a driver’s knee airbag. The car also earned a full suite of top crash results in the expert safety writeup, with the Titanium trim benefiting from 4-wheel discs and stronger stopping performance than S and SE.
- Infotainment: The Titanium’s tech setup includes an 8-inch touchscreen display, Ford Sync, MyFord Touch, navigation, and the Sony sound system. The writeup does not mention wireless CarPlay, Android Auto, or over-the-air updates.
- Fuel efficiency: The PowerShift automatic is rated at 27 mpg city and 37 mpg highway, while the manual drops 1 mpg on both ends.
Which 2014 Ford Focus trim should I buy?
The 2014 Ford Focus is offered in 1 trim level: Titanium.
Here's the short version:
The Titanium is the trim to target if you want the most complete version of this Focus, with the strongest mix of features, comfort, and equipment. It adds the 8-inch touchscreen, navigation, dual-zone climate control, rear-view camera, heated mirrors, keyless entry and start, and the upgraded Sony audio system, so it feels much more premium than the lower trims. It is the best-value choice if you want the Focus’s nicer cabin and tech without stepping outside the standard gas model. Safety content also notes that S and SE trims use rear drum brakes, while Titanium gets 4-wheel discs.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Ford Focus?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully and compare listings.
- Deal availability: 26.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,179 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.25% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 62.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $6,858.97, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2014 Ford Focus's resale value?
The current average of $7,094 sits slightly below last year's $7,258.
That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point. For a future seller, that also means resale value may depend heavily on condition, mileage, and maintenance history rather than broad market momentum. If you keep the car clean and well documented, you should be in a better position to hold demand when it is time to sell.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2014 Ford Focus safe?
It earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, with four-star ratings in frontal crash and rollover, and five-star ratings in all other NHTSA tests. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded it its highest rating of Good in all tests.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Seven airbags come standard, including a driver’s knee airbag. The safety writeup also notes that the Titanium trim benefits from 4-wheel discs and stronger stopping performance, while S and SE trims use rear drum brakes. One caveat is that stopping performance varies by trim, so the exact car you buy matters.
Should I buy a 2014 Ford Focus or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 26.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 62.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.25% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2014 keeps the redesigned Focus feeling current while offering a composed chassis and responsive suspension.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $7,687, the 2015 costs more than the current year's $7,094 average.
- It brings a more polished European-influenced ride and handling.
The bottom line: If you want the lower price and are willing to inspect carefully for transmission and history issues, the 2014 is the smarter buy. If you can spend more and want a slightly more refined feel, the 2015 is the better secondary path for shoppers who value polish over price.
