Is the 2014 Chevrolet Malibu a good car?

Yes — the 2014 Chevrolet Malibu earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.2/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Technology and Safety.

With 25.9% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a meaningful chance to find a competitive offer.

Is the 2014 Chevrolet Malibu reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

User feedback points to a car that many owners find dependable, with praise centered on its excellent fuel economy, quiet ride, and family-trip comfort. The expert review also describes it as a well-sorted sedan, and the cost-effectiveness notes mention free factory-scheduled maintenance for 2 years or 24,000 miles.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that some listings may come with warranty concerns, so condition and service history matter.

What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Chevrolet Malibu?

At 51.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re comparing multiple listings at similar prices. Focus on signs of prior bodywork, uneven wear, and whether the car’s equipment matches the trim level you’re considering. Because some owners mention missing features and warranty concerns, it’s smart to verify that the car’s condition and equipment line up with your expectations.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The entry-level LS comes with 16-inch alloy wheels, Bluetooth, OnStar, a height-adjustable driver’s seat, and cruise control, while the 1LT adds the Chevrolet MyLink 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with satellite radio and voice recognition, heated mirrors, and floor mats. The 2LT adds dual-zone automatic climate control, remote start, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, driver’s power lumbar adjustment, and 18-inch alloys, while the 1LTZ brings leather upholstery, unique alloy wheels, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and heated 8-way power front seats. The 2LTZ adds a power moonroof and the upgraded engine.
• Powertrain: The standard setup uses a direct-injected 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 196 horsepower and a 6-speed automatic, and it is front-wheel drive only. The available turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder brings 259 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque, with fuel economy rated at 21 mpg city and 30 mpg highway.
• Safety package: The Malibu includes 10 standard airbags, and available safety tech includes rear-side airbags, side blind-zone alert, a rear-view camera, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-departure warning. The tested 2LTZ also included forward-collision warning.
• Infotainment: The MyLink system uses a 7-inch touchscreen and includes text-message reading and response, iPhone-specific Eyes Free mode, Pandora, Stitcher, and voice control. OnStar Directions & Connections is complimentary for the first 6 months of ownership.
• Fuel efficiency: The standard 2.5-liter engine is rated at 25 mpg city and 36 mpg highway, while the turbocharged 2.0-liter returns 21 mpg city and 30 mpg highway.

Which 2014 Chevrolet Malibu trim should I buy?

The 2014 Chevrolet Malibu is offered in 6 trim levels: LS, 1LT, 2LT, 3LT, 1LTZ, 2LTZ.

Here's the short version:

• LS: This is the least expensive way into the Malibu, and it gives you the core sedan experience with Bluetooth, OnStar, cruise control, and a height-adjustable driver’s seat. It makes sense if you want the lowest entry price and can live without the upgraded infotainment and comfort features found higher up.
• 1LT: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the MyLink 7-inch touchscreen, satellite radio, voice recognition, heated mirrors, and floor mats without jumping too far up the price ladder. If you want the most useful everyday upgrades for the money, this is the trim to target.
• 2LT: This trim adds a more upscale feel with dual-zone automatic climate control, remote start, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, driver’s power lumbar adjustment, and 18-inch alloys. It suits you if comfort and convenience matter more than keeping the purchase price as low as possible.
• 3LT: This version is essentially a 2LT with a more powerful standard engine, so it’s the pick if you want the stronger powertrain without moving all the way to the premium trims.
• 1LTZ: This is the premium-grade Malibu, with leather upholstery, unique alloy wheels, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and heated 8-way power front seats. It’s the right choice if you want a more upscale cabin and don’t mind paying more for it.
• 2LTZ: This trim adds a power moonroof and the upgraded engine, making it the most fully equipped version in the lineup. Choose it if you want the top-end Malibu experience and are comfortable paying for it.

The safety content highlights a strong overall safety package, including 10 standard airbags and available driver-assistance features, so even lower trims benefit from a solid foundation.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Chevrolet Malibu?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 25.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 718 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.56% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 51.4% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $7,571, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2014 Chevrolet Malibu's resale value?

The current average of $7,829 sits slightly below last year's $8,034.

That tells you the Malibu has softened a bit in the used market, which can help you as a buyer but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. The current pricing trend suggests future sellers may need to stay competitive, especially if similar listings continue to sit in the market. Strong equipment, clean history, and good condition should matter more if you want to protect value later.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2014 Chevrolet Malibu safe?

The 2014 Chevrolet Malibu earns an overall five-star rating from NHTSA and a best-possible Good ranking in all IIHS tests.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The safety package includes 10 standard airbags, plus available rear-side airbags, side blind-zone alert, a rear-view camera, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-departure warning. The tested 2LTZ also included forward-collision warning.

Should I buy a 2014 Chevrolet Malibu or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2014 if:

• 25.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 51.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.56% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• Expert or safety highlight specific to this year from the review: it combines a 196-hp 2.5-liter engine, strong fuel economy, and a safety package that earned top marks.

The bottom line: The 2014 Malibu makes sense if you want a used midsize sedan with strong owner satisfaction, good fuel economy, and a lower average price than many rivals. If you’re especially price-sensitive, this year is worth a close look; if you want more modern tech and broader trim variety, a newer Malibu may be the better path.

How does the 2014 Chevrolet Malibu compare to the 2014 Toyota Camry?

Our experts score the 2014 Chevrolet Malibu 7.2/10 and the 2014 Toyota Camry 7.5/10.

The Malibu gives you more horsepower, a lower average used price, and a stronger deal share, while the Camry edges it on expert score and has a larger pool of listings. If you want the better value play, the Malibu is the more affordable choice; if you want the slightly stronger overall expert pick, the Camry has the edge.
