Why it stands out
The 2014 BMW i3 stands out because it takes a familiar car layout and changes just enough to feel completely different. It still has four wheels at the corners, steering up front, doors on the sides, and seats in the middle, but BMW’s unusual approach gives it a revolutionary design and a driving experience that feels unlike most other vehicles on the road. That distinctiveness is part of its appeal: it is a car for buyers who want something genuinely different rather than a conventional compact EV.
At the same time, the i3’s appeal comes with a tradeoff. BMW’s own description points to “pricy efficiency,” which captures the car’s unusual mix of innovation and cost. Owner feedback also reflects that balance, with praise for its fun driving experience, comfort, and futuristic design, alongside complaints about battery range and interior material quality. For city use, it can be an appealing and memorable choice, but it may be less convincing for drivers who need longer-range practicality.
This analysis is based on CarGurus' proprietary market data from September 7, 2026, CarGurus experts' opinions, and generative AI.

This car is great for city driving. Its way ahead of its time. I would not recommend it for long commutes unless you have adequate charging options. Also, I would recommend the rex version for older models because if the limited range.

A fantastic car for the current and the future, currently a great city car and ideal for business use. The range is good for most journeys, but the extender version can do 180+ miles. This car will save you money.

Is the 2014 BMW i3 a good car?
The 3.57/5 user rating and 6.83/10 expert rating point to a car that is appealing in the right use case, but not universally easy to live with. The standout strength is Look and feel at 9/10.
Owners repeatedly praise its fun driving experience, comfort, and futuristic design. The overview also frames it as a strong fit for city use, where its unusual packaging and distinctive character matter more than long-distance practicality.
That same feedback also flags battery range and interior material quality as common drawbacks, so you should think of it as a niche choice rather than a conventional compact EV. The current market shows 11.1% good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2014 BMW i3 reliable?
The overview and expert testing both suggest a car built around innovation and efficiency rather than simple, low-drama ownership. Owners describe it as a good option for city driving, and the review summary also points to a trouble-free, dependable feel for buyers who stay within its intended use.
The expert drive notes that the i3’s range-extender generator is barely noticeable once it kicks in, and BMW’s fully hydraulic brakes avoid the grabby feel that can plague some electrified cars. The cost-effectiveness notes also mention that BMW’s charging station can add useful range quickly at home.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that the i3’s unusual design and battery-focused setup can make repairs, range expectations, and ownership costs more sensitive to condition and usage history.
What should I look for when buying a used 2014 BMW i3?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 76.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a history report on every candidate, because the cleanest-looking listing can hide prior damage or heavy use. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on battery health, charging behavior, and any signs of wear in the cabin materials. Because this car is so use-case dependent, condition matters more than mileage alone.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base Mega World trim is the stripped-down starting point, while Giga World and Tera World add extra trim pieces such as eucalyptus wood and leather seats. If you want the most complete feel, the higher worlds are the ones that add the nicer cabin materials.
- Powertrain: The i3 uses an electric motor, and the range-extender version adds a small 2-cylinder gas engine that only generates extra power for the battery. The electric-only setup is best suited to city use, while the range-extender version gives you more flexibility if you need extra buffer.
- Safety package: The car comes with 6 standard airbags plus traction and stability control. BMW also offers a Parking Assistant Package with Parking Assistant, Distance Control, and a rear-view camera, along with a Technology + Driving Assistant Package that adds navigation with real-time traffic, Active Driving assistant, and BMW online services.
- Infotainment: The Technology + Driving Assistant Package adds navigation with real-time traffic, and the iDrive system is described as easy to use and quick. BMW online services are included with that package.
- Fuel efficiency: The i3 is described as delivering 75-mile electric-only range, with the range-extender adding about 75 miles more. BMW also claims 80% charge in 30 minutes on DC fast charging, and around 30 miles of range per hour with the home charging station.
Which 2014 BMW i3 trim should I buy?
The 2014 BMW i3 is offered in 3 trim levels: Mega World, Giga World, Tera World.
Here's the short version:
- Mega World: This is the starting point, and it is the most stripped-down version of the i3. It makes sense if you want the core design and driving experience at the lowest entry point, but it leaves you with fewer comfort and convenience extras.
- Giga World: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds more appealing cabin trim without pushing all the way to the top. If you want a nicer interior without overpaying for extras you may not need, this is the one to target.
- Tera World: This is the most upscale version, with the richest trim pieces and leather seating. Choose it if you care most about the cabin presentation and want the most premium-feeling i3.
The safety setup is straightforward across the lineup, with 6 standard airbags plus traction and stability control, while the Parking Assistant Package and Technology + Driving Assistant Package remain optional.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 BMW i3?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and focus on the right example rather than rushing.
- Deal availability: 11.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 72 listings available.
- Clean inventory: 76.4% of listings are accident-free.
Is the 2014 BMW i3 safe?
The 2014 BMW i3 has not been tested by either NHTSA or IIHS.
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
BMW says the passenger compartment should remain intact in crashes up to 40 mph, and the car comes with 6 standard airbags plus traction and stability control. The available Parking Assistant Package adds Parking Assistant, Distance Control, and a rear-view camera, while the Technology + Driving Assistant Package adds navigation with real-time traffic, Active Driving assistant, and BMW online services.
Should I buy a 2014 BMW i3 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 11.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 76.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- It offers a distinctive city-focused EV experience with a range-extender option and a futuristic design.
Consider the 2015 if:
- It adds a 22kWh battery and 80 miles of electric range.
The bottom line: If you want the most distinctive, city-friendly version of the i3 and you’re comfortable shopping carefully, the 2014 can make sense. If you want the cleaner path to the next model year’s updated battery-first setup, the 2015 is the better direction; if price matters most, the 2014’s market can still reward a selective buyer.
