2015 BMW i3 test drive
overall
The BMW i3 is an interesting proof-of-concept for the automaker that battery-first tech has a future in the rest of its lineup.
The small, lumpy i3 hatchback may not look like a BMW underneath all of its badges and grilles, but it does have enough tech to make up for it. A carbon fiber and aluminum body, and lightweight materials inside, help a 22kWh battery power the i3 for 80 miles on electricity alone—when fitted with an optional "range extending" gas-powered generator, twice that. Its $42,400 entry price isn't for the squeamish, but the "gee-whiz" tech helps make up for that.

It has nearly all the features I am looking for but two. I would like the bigger battery pack and I do not think the Rex system is needed for my use case.

Great car for graceful people who don't have to travel very far on a single charge. I knocked heads with the passenger as we buckled up (I'm under 5' tall, so this was a width/coordination problem). The backseat is incredibly small with no windows, which was a no-go for my kid. The car was adorable and super fun to drive, though. If I were single and childless I would have bought it.

This is a high end version with driver and parking assist, leather interior and bigger display screens. The wood dash adds to a beautiful contrast with the brown seating. It was a great deal. Accepting the relatively short driving range will be OK once I use it for commuting. Long distance travel (drive it home over 300 miles) is challenging even with the clever extended range feature. It is a work of art and technology!

Car drives smoothly with good acceleration. Not a lot of cargo space, but would be perfect for a couple or a family with a child. If you are a minimalist, this car would work fantastic for you, car is quirky but quirky is better than sitting on the roadside because you cant afford gas.

Is the 2015 BMW i3 a good car?
Yes — you rate it 4.5/5, and the expert rating is 7.00/10. The standout strength is Technology at 9/10. Owners praise the smooth ride, stylish interior, fun driving experience, and the convenience of electric commuting, while the quirky design also comes through as a recurring plus. The market shows 9.3% of listings as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop carefully.
Is the 2015 BMW i3 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. Owners also describe it as dependable for commuting, with the electric setup and smooth day-to-day use coming up as recurring positives. The expert notes that the range extender is not a usable long-term replacement for regular recharging, so your ownership risk is tied more to how you plan to use and recharge it than to the car’s basic appeal. If you want a used i3, make sure the battery range and charging habits fit your routine.
What should I look for when buying a used 2015 BMW i3?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 76.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a history report on any listing and confirm there are no hidden accident or title issues. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on battery health, charging behavior, and overall condition. Because the i3’s range and packaging are central to the ownership experience, pay close attention to whether the car still suits your commute and cargo needs.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The i3 comes in three trims or “Worlds” — Mega, Giga, and Tera. The Mega uses 19-inch tires and Sensa-tec fabric, the Giga adds leather seats and an open-pore eucalyptus-wood dash, and the Tera adds a leather dash and hand-stitched accents. The base-level equipment is the most minimal, so you should compare interior materials and wheel/tire content carefully.
- Powertrain: You get a 170-hp all-electric rear-wheel-drive setup with a single-speed transmission. An optional 600cc range-extending generator adds flexibility, but it does not mechanically drive the wheels. The battery is good for roughly 80 miles of city driving, and the range extender roughly doubles that.
- Safety package: The i3 uses LifeDrive construction, carbon fiber reinforcement in collision areas, and front- and side-impact airbags. Antilock brakes and child seat safety latches are standard across all versions.
- Infotainment: The optional 10.2-inch high-definition screen is clear and easy to navigate, and the car uses BMW’s iDrive system. An optional Technology + Driving Assistance Package adds the high-def screen and real-time traffic info.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA rates it at 117 mpge on electricity alone and 39 mpg with the range extender.
Which 2015 BMW i3 trim should I buy?
The 2015 BMW i3 is offered in 3 trim levels: Mega, Giga, and Tera.
Here's the short version:
- Mega: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core i3 experience with 19-inch tires and Sensa-tec fabric. Choose it if you want the least expensive way into the model and care more about the electric driving experience than upscale cabin materials.
- Giga: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds leather seats and an open-pore eucalyptus-wood dash without moving all the way to the top trim. It’s the sweet spot if you want a more premium cabin without chasing every luxury detail.
- Tera: This is the most upscale version, with a leather dash and hand-stitched accents. Pick it if you want the richest interior presentation and are willing to pay for it.
The safety equipment is standard across all versions, so your trim choice is mostly about interior materials and comfort content.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2015 BMW i3?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but should move quickly on the right car.
- Deal availability: 9.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 108 listings available.
- Clean inventory: 76.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $8,390.05, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2015 BMW i3 safe?
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
Neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has rated the i3 for crash safety. According to the manufacturer, the i3 uses a LifeDrive construction to compartmentalize and protect the passenger cabin in a crash, with carbon fiber composites reinforcing collision areas. Front- and side-impact airbags are included, along with antilock brakes and child seat safety latches. Because there is no crash-test result to lean on, you should put extra weight on condition, repair history, and how carefully the car has been maintained.
Should I buy a 2015 BMW i3 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2015 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2015 if:
- 9.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 76.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It stands out for its tech-heavy, unconventional electric driving experience.
Consider the 2014 if:
- It delivers a similarly unusual, small-scale electric-car experience with very little change from the 2015.
The bottom line: If you want the 2015 BMW i3’s mix of quirky design, strong tech, and easy commuting, this year makes sense as long as the range works for your daily use. If you’re mainly shopping on price, the 2014 is worth a look because it offers a very similar experience and may be the more budget-friendly path.
