About 2015 BMW i3
overall
The BMW i3 is an interesting proof-of-concept for the automaker that battery-first tech has a future in the rest of its lineup.
The small, lumpy i3 hatchback may not look like a BMW underneath all of its badges and grilles, but it does have enough tech to make up for it. A carbon fiber and aluminum body, and lightweight materials inside, help a 22kWh battery power the i3 for 80 miles on electricity alone—when fitted with an optional "range extending" gas-powered generator, twice that. Its $42,400 entry price isn't for the squeamish, but the "gee-whiz" tech helps make up for that.

It has nearly all the features I am looking for but two. I would like the bigger battery pack and I do not think the Rex system is needed for my use case.

Great car for graceful people who don't have to travel very far on a single charge. I knocked heads with the passenger as we buckled up (I'm under 5' tall, so this was a width/coordination problem). The backseat is incredibly small with no windows, which was a no-go for my kid. The car was adorable and super fun to drive, though. If I were single and childless I would have bought it.

This is a high end version with driver and parking assist, leather interior and bigger display screens. The wood dash adds to a beautiful contrast with the brown seating. It was a great deal. Accepting the relatively short driving range will be OK once I use it for commuting. Long distance travel (drive it home over 300 miles) is challenging even with the clever extended range feature. It is a work of art and technology!

Car drives smoothly with good acceleration. Not a lot of cargo space, but would be perfect for a couple or a family with a child. If you are a minimalist, this car would work fantastic for you, car is quirky but quirky is better than sitting on the roadside because you cant afford gas.

Is the 2015 BMW i3 a good car?
Yes — the 4.5/5 user rating and 7.0/10 expert rating point to a car that resonates with shoppers who want something different. The standout strength is Technology at 9/10. Owners repeatedly praise the smooth ride, stylish interior, fun driving experience, and the convenience of electric driving, especially for commuting. The i3’s unusual design and premium-badge appeal fit buyers who want a tech-forward city car with a lot of personality. With 12.5% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is at least some market opportunity if you find the right example.
Is the 2015 BMW i3 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. User feedback points to a reliable, dependable, and trouble-free ownership experience for many drivers, especially those using the car for commuting and everyday electric driving. The expert evaluation also emphasizes that the range-extending generator is not a usable long-term replacement for regular charging, so the ownership experience depends heavily on how well the car fits your routine. If you buy used, your biggest long-term risk is mismatch between your driving habits and the i3’s limited range and charging needs.
What should I look for when buying a used 2015 BMW i3?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 76% — always verify the vehicle history report. You should still check the report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a proper history review. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on battery-related condition, charging behavior, and overall wear, especially if the car has been used for longer commutes or frequent fast-turnaround driving. Pay close attention to whether the car’s range and cabin space still match your needs.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Mega trim uses 19-inch tires and Sensa-tec fabric, the Giga adds leather seats and an open-pore eucalyptus-wood dash, and the Tera adds a leather dash and hand-stitched accents. The higher trims bring more upscale materials, while the base trim is the most straightforward way into the car.
- Powertrain: The i3 uses a 170-hp all-electric rear-wheel-drive setup with a single-speed transmission. An optional 34-hp range-extending generator can double the driving range, but it only acts as a generator and is not a traditional hybrid system.
- Safety package: The car includes front- and side-impact airbags, antilock brakes, and child seat safety latches across all versions.
- Infotainment: An optional 10.2-inch high-definition screen is available, and the system includes BMW iDrive. A Technology + Driving Assistance Package adds the high-def screen and real-time traffic info.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA rates it at 117 mpge on electricity alone and 39 mpg when using the range extender.
Which 2015 BMW i3 trim should I buy?
The 2015 BMW i3 is offered in 3 trim levels: Mega, Giga, and Tera.
Here's the short version:
- Mega: This is the simplest entry point, with 19-inch tires and Sensa-tec fabric. It makes sense if you want the i3 experience without paying for the more upscale cabin materials.
- Giga: This trim adds leather seats and an open-pore eucalyptus-wood dash, making it the best-value choice for many shoppers who want a more premium feel without going all the way to the top trim.
- Tera: This is the most luxurious version, with a leather dash and hand-stitched accents. Choose it if you want the richest interior presentation and are willing to pay for it.
The safety equipment is standard across all versions, including front- and side-impact airbags, antilock brakes, and child seat safety latches.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2015 BMW i3?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and wait for the right car.
- Deal availability: 12.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 96 listings available.
- Clean inventory: 76.0% of listings are accident-free.
Is the 2015 BMW i3 safe?
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
Due to its extremely low volume, neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has rated the i3 for crash safety. According to the manufacturer, the i3 uses a LifeDrive construction to compartmentalize and protect the passenger cabin in a crash. Carbon fiber composites were used to reinforce collision areas, and the i3 has front- and side-impact airbags. Antilock brakes and child seat safety latches are standard across all versions.
Should I buy a 2015 BMW i3 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2015 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2015 if:
- 12.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 76% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It pairs a carbon-fiber-and-aluminum body with a 22kWh battery and an optional range-extending generator for a distinctly tech-forward EV experience.
Consider the 2014 if:
- It delivers a similarly unconventional, city-friendly EV experience with a revolutionary design.
The bottom line: The 2015 is the better pick if you want the i3’s tech-heavy personality and can live with its range and practicality tradeoffs. If you’re shopping on a tighter budget, the 2014 may still make sense, but the 2015 is the cleaner choice for buyers who want the most complete version of this early BMW EV concept.
