CarGurus Analysis: 2014 BMW 3 Series
overall

Summary
With 146 currently listed for sale and an average price of $11,951, 13.0% of 2014 BMW 3 Series listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2014 BMW 3 Series 4.79 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.33 / 10.
59.6% of 2014 BMW 3 Series listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2014 BMW 3 Series stands out as a sports sedan that still leans hard into the qualities that made the nameplate famous: deft handling, sublime steering, and silky engines in a clean four-door body. It also has the kind of road manners that make it easy to appreciate in everyday driving, with punchy acceleration, solid and reassuring brakes, and handling that stays flat and confident without sending too many jolts through the cabin on rougher roads.
That said, the 2014 BMW 3 Series is not presented as an untouchable benchmark anymore. The source notes that newer rivals have gotten close to, and in some cases surpassed, what the BMW offers, so shoppers cross-shopping this car should not assume it is automatically the best choice in the class. Even so, it remains appealing for buyers who want a refined, engaging sedan with a strong driving character and a long-standing reputation for getting the basics right.

Diesel review only, I’ve never tested the gasoline models. The BMW 328D diesel xdrive is the most fuel efficient internal combustion engine powered all wheel drive vehicle. Go ahead and try to find another more efficient, you won’t be able to. For Highway it will get you into the 52 MPG range stock, and with a some modification into the 56 range, City is still high 40’s. It has all the creature comfort’s you could want, and is a quite, comfortable ride! Blasts through snow and ice especially with winter tires, this is a great car for all regions. Car is plenty spacious for four and has a large trunk (boot ) storage. Find yourself one!

I love the 3 series cars by BMW. Quick and sporty but still gets decent gas mileage and remain classy. Definitely recommend them.

How much does the 2014 BMW 3 Series cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $10,070 |
| Year-Round Low | $9,797 |
| Year-Round High | $10,210 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $10,196 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −1.23% |
Prices have softened 1.23% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,441 listings available, which suggests you should have a workable selection to compare.
Is the 2014 BMW 3 Series a good car?
Yes — the 2014 BMW 3 Series earns a 4.8/5 user rating and a 7.3/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Look and feel at 9/10.
Drivers consistently praise the fun driving experience, modern styling, and comfort. The user feedback also points to fuel efficiency in the diesel model and a spacious interior, which helps this sedan work well as an everyday car rather than just a weekend toy.
In use-case terms, the overview frames it as a sports sedan that still delivers deft handling, sublime steering, and strong road manners, so you should expect the most satisfaction if you want an engaging daily driver. The market also shows 30.5% good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2014 BMW 3 Series reliable?
Owners rate it 4.8/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a car that many owners feel good about living with over time, with praise centered on dependable-feeling ownership, comfort, and the kind of driving experience people want to keep coming back to. The expert driving notes also describe solid, reassuring brakes and a flat, confident chassis, which supports the sense that the car is composed and easy to trust on the road.
BMW’s no-cost maintenance plan adds another ownership advantage, covering scheduled checkups and replacements for items like oil, wipers, brake discs, and pads for 4 years or 50,000 miles. Even so, used buyers should still budget carefully, because age, mileage, and prior maintenance history can have a bigger effect on long-term costs than the badge alone.
What should I look for when buying a used 2014 BMW 3 Series?
At 55.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had bodywork or multiple owners. Focus on panel alignment, tire wear, brake condition, and signs that the car’s electronics and driver aids still work as intended.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: BMW offers four distinct trim lines: Base, Luxury, Sport and M Sport. Sport and M Sport emphasize performance with more aggressive body styling, larger wheels, and stiffer suspensions, while the source also notes that many desirable items are extra, so base cars can feel sparse.
- Powertrain: BMW offers four engines and three transmissions. The lineup includes 2.0-liter twin-turbo 4-cylinder engines in the 320i and 328i, a twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder in the 335i, and a 2.0-liter twin-turbo diesel 4-cylinder in the 328d. A 6-speed manual is available in all trims.
- Safety package: BMW Assist eCall is standard, along with adaptive brake lamps and automatic brake drying. Blind-spot detection, parking sensors, and even a basic alarm system are not standard, and a backup camera also does not come standard.
- Infotainment: The car uses BMW’s iDrive controller with a large color screen, quick-loading menus, Bluetooth streaming audio, USB connectivity, and BMW Apps support. An automated parallel parking system, head-up display, adaptive cruise control, and additional cameras are available.
- Fuel efficiency: The 328d promises an EPA-estimated 45-mpg-highway rating, while the expert drive notes also mention a disappointing 17 mpg in mostly city driving with the tester.
Which 2014 BMW 3 Series trim should I buy?
The 2014 BMW 3 Series is offered in 4 trim levels: Base, Luxury, Sport and M Sport.
Here's the short version:
- Base: This is the entry point, but the source makes clear that BMW loads many desirable features and comfort items onto options lists, so you should only choose this if price matters most and you’re comfortable keeping the car simple.
- Luxury: This is the better fit if you want the classic 3 Series experience with a more upscale feel, without leaning into the firmer, more aggressive setup of the sportier trims.
- Sport: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds more aggressive styling and a more performance-focused setup without going all the way to the top of the range.
- M Sport: Choose this if you want the most aggressive appearance and chassis tuning mentioned in the source, and you’re willing to pay more for it.
Safety-package note: BMW Assist eCall, adaptive brake lamps, and automatic brake drying are standard, while blind-spot detection, parking sensors, and a backup camera are not.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 BMW 3 Series?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right car.
- Deal availability: 30.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,441 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.23% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 55.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $9,797, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2014 BMW 3 Series's resale value?
The current average of $10,070 sits slightly below last year's $10,196.
That mild decline suggests the market has softened a bit, which can help you as a buyer today but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. For a future seller, the key takeaway is that this model year is holding value reasonably well rather than collapsing, so condition and equipment will matter a lot when it’s time to list it.
The price range also shows the market is fairly tight around the current average, which usually means clean, well-kept examples should remain easier to move than neglected ones. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2014 BMW 3 Series safe?
The 2014 BMW 3 Series didn’t fare too well in new small-overlap crash tests by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, and it still gains five-star ratings on government crash tests.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
BMW Assist eCall is standard, along with adaptive brake lamps and automatic brake drying. The source also notes that blind-spot detection, parking sensors, and a backup camera are not standard, so you should check carefully for the equipment you want.
The small-overlap result is the main caveat here, so a used example with complete safety equipment and a clean history is the smarter buy.
Should I buy a 2014 BMW 3 Series or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 30.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 55.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.23% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The expert summary says the latest version is still appealing, but no longer the undisputed class leader.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $10,282, the 2015 costs more than the current year's $10,070 average.
- It shifts to a sedan-only lineup and faces an even more competitive segment.
The bottom line: The 2014 is the better value if you want the classic 3 Series formula at a lower price and can live with shopping carefully. If you want the newer model-year setup and don’t mind paying more, the 2015 is the cleaner next step.
