The Toyota RAV4 is one of the most popular vehicles in the compact SUV segment, leading the automaker to offer a range of configurations, propulsion types, and options. The RAV4 Plug-In Hybrid enters 2026 with competitive electric range, strong value, and a good number of standard technology and safety features. Toyota recently changed the SUV’s name from RAV4 Prime, a shift that happened for the 2025 model year.

What’s New for the 2026 Toyota RAV4 PHEV
The RAV4 is all-new for 2026 and gains several new configurations, including a move to an all-electrified powertrain lineup. A new GR Sport trim joins the catalog, along with a hybrid or PHEV Woodland trim, and the plug-in powertrain offers 20 percent more driving range, reaching 50 miles for the model year.
Design
The new RAV4 isn’t styled dramatically differently from its predecessor, but it features a boxier, more upright look that borrows elements from the larger 4Runner and Land Cruiser. The GR Sport model features an aggressive grille and lower air intakes, and Toyota offers a range of wheel choices, depending on the trim and configuration.
Powertrain
The RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid comes with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and two electric motors that make a combined 302 horsepower. A continuously variable transmission (CVT) and all-wheel drive (AWD) are standard. That combination was once strong enough to make the RAV4 Prime Toyota’s second-quickest vehicle, and while other models have stepped into that gap, it remains a livelier-than-expected SUV with strong acceleration and decent handling. Additionally, the RAV4 maintains a mostly smooth ride quality and is reasonably quiet on rougher road surfaces.

Interior
The five-seat RAV4 comes standard with cloth upholstery, but higher trims add synthetic leather. Heated and ventilated front seats and a heated steering wheel are available. The RAV4 offers generous front-seat space and a reasonably comfortable back seat, though it’s much more accommodating with two adults in the back. Toyota offers a range of cargo management solutions, including nets, mats, anchors, and more.
Technology
The new RAV4 comes with a 10.5-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, and more. A 12.9-inch touchscreen is available, which pairs with a standard 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. A head-up display is available for the SE trim, and most models come with a JBL audio system. Toyota updated its infotainment system, making it much easier and less distracting to use. The new interface is more responsive and intuitive, and it’s easier to see, thanks to the bright new look.
Safety
The 2026 RAV4 is the first to use Toyota Safety Sense 4.0. The system comes with the latest advanced driver-assistance systems, but Toyota said details won’t be available until closer to the vehicle’s launch. The new SUV hasn’t been crash-tested yet.

Pricing and Release Date
As of this writing, Toyota has not yet priced the 2026 RAV4 Plug-In Hybrid. The 2025 model started at $44,565, so we expect the new model to carry at least a slight price bump over its predecessor.
