The Toyota Prius practically kickstarted the hybrid car movement in the US, and it remains a top-selling option in its class today. Toyota recently overhauled the car, giving it more modern styling and making it a much more attractive option compared to the wild-looking Prius models from years past.

What’s New for the 2025 Toyota Prius Plug-In
Toyota didn’t introduce any substantive changes in 2025; the only update is a name change from Prius Prime to Prius Plug-in Hybrid (or PHEV). The car's last major update took place in 2023, when it saw a complete redesign, but the change was drastic enough to keep the Prius competitive with its class.
Design
For years, the Prius was one of the most polarizing vehicles on the market in terms of styling. Toyota relied on wild shapes and strong lines that made the car look futuristic in a slightly cartoonish way. The new car is much sleeker and is more cleanly designed, with a low-slung shape and more curves than angles.
Powertrain
The Prius PHEV comes with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and two electric motors making a combined 220 horsepower and 139 pound-feet of torque. Front-wheel drive (FWD) and a continuously variable transmission (CVT) are standard. Toyota quotes a 44-mile all-electric range for the SE trim, but higher trims are limited to a still-impressive 40-mile range.

Interior
The Prius PHEV seats five people on standard cloth upholstery. A heated steering wheel is standard, and more expensive trims add heated front seats and synthetic leather upholstery. Ventilated front seats and heated rear outboard seats are available. The Prius Plug-In Hybrid offers a good amount of space in the front, with wide, supportive seats and generous legroom. Adults can ride comfortably in the back, though it’s a less accommodating space with somewhat limited headroom due to the car’s sloped roof.
Technology
A 7-inch digital gauge cluster and an 8-inch touchscreen come standard on the 2025 Prius PHEV, along with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Other standard tech features include SiriusXM radio, Bluetooth, a Wi-Fi hotspot, six speakers, and multiple USB ports. Toyota’s updated infotainment system is much easier to use and less distracting than previous iterations, and the new displays are crisp, offering easy viewing for both front passengers.
Safety
The 2025 Prius Plug-In Hybrid hasn’t been crash-tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) yet, but its predecessor earned a Top Safety Pick designation. Toyota offers a long list of standard safety tech, including automatic emergency braking, forward-collision warning, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, traffic-sign recognition, and a rearview camera. Upper trims add a head-up display, reverse automatic braking, a rear camera mirror, a surround-view camera system, and automatic wipers.

Pricing and Release Date
As of the time of this writing, the 2025 Prius Plug-In Hybrid starts at $33,375. The mid-range XSE trim costs $36,625, and the top Premium version starts at $40,070.
