The 2009 Ford Focus S is the base trim for this popular compact car. The exterior of the S trim is recognizable by its black door handles, black manual side mirrors, chrome two-bar grille, halogen headlamps, and 15-inch wheel covers and P195/60R15 BSW tires. The standard seats are cloth for the S trim, the only truly defining characteristic for the interior.
While these features are unique to the S, Ford hasn’t really neglected this base trim – it comes standard with air conditioning, an AM/FM/CD stereo with MP3 capability and four speakers, two 12-volt power outlets, a tilt steering column, solar-tinted glass, the full range of Focus safety features, from a tire pressure monitoring system to a crash severity sensor, and, of course, the mileage (24 city/35 highway mpg) and pricetag ($14,995 MSRP) that have made the Focus so popular.

For the extra money the SE exterior gets 15-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, power sideview mirrors, power windows and door locks, and a remote keyless entry system with two fobs. The move to the SE trim also adds a message center with instantaneous fuel economy readings and SIRIUS satellite radio to the interior. The SE trim offers an available SYNC in-car voice-activated communications and entertainment system and Electronic Stability Control, included with the Anti-Lock Brake System and Traction Control.

The interior of the SES gets a serious upgrade from the SE's with ambient lighting, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, steering-wheel-mounted cruise and audio controls, Ford’s SYNC voice-activated, in-vehicle communications and entertainment center, a metallic instrument panel appliqué with bright cluster rings, release handles, and register accents, and a metallic console top plate.
The Focus SES's performance gets a boost from an enhanced European-inspired suspension, a rear stabilizer bar, and 16-inch aluminum alloy wheels with P205/50R16 BSW tires. The exterior upgrades for the SES are similar to those of the SE Coupe, with body-color door handles, a chrome exhaust tip, power and heated body-color sideview mirrors, a rear decklid spoiler, and foglamps.

Not surprisingly, the 2009 Ford Focus SES Coupe gets many of the same upgrades as the SES sedan – a European-inspired suspension, a rear stabilizer bar, ambient lighting, metallic accents on the instrument panels, steering-wheel-mounted cruise and audio controls, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and Ford’s SYNC voice-activated, in-vehicle communications and entertainment center. It also has many of the features of the SE Coupe, including sport-tuned exhaust, power windows, locks, and mirrors, dark chrome headlamps and taillamps, and a chrome exhaust tip. The SES Coupe has its own unique features as well – 17-inch premium painted dark stainless aluminum wheels with P215/45R17 BSW tires and a high-mount rear spoiler.
