For 2008, the Toyota FJ Cruiser crossover SUV got some new standard features, including curtain airbags for both rows of seats and an anti-theft system. Otherwise, the FJ Cruiser has 3 trims and retains its 4.0-liter, 239-hp V6 powertrain. You'll have your pick between a five-speed automatic and a six-speed manual transmission.
Gas mileage averages out to 16 mpg in the city and 19 on the highway. Maximum towing capacity comes out to 5,000 lbs. With 4 doors and room for 5 passengers, the FJ Cruiser should have the capacity to handle a small family.
Overall, drivers like the FJ Cruiser's solid powertrain and retro styling. On the other hand, its towing capacity doesn't top the charts, and the unique style may turn some drivers off. In any event, 2008 marks another year of steady progress for an interesting new foreign crossover SUV.

Really like everything about this vehicles features. Has just enough tech to be convenient but not so much you dont know how to work everything. Water resistant seats and rubber floors make for easy cleaning They are a little over priced cause they didnt make a lot of them and they are getting older and higher mileage. Watch for rust on the frames, especially from norther vehicles. I would probably compare it to a jeep but I feel the Toyota has better quality and longevity.Oct 09, 2023

The sticker shock is overwhelming but when you look at longevity, dependability and comfort theres no other vehicle out there that can match it... with stabilitrack, rear lockers and ease of use, it is very comfortable to use.. I need to update mine to a rear camera and a few camping options that are needed to make every excursion a little bit like home... Mar 05, 2022

Solid sturdy sporty vehicle. We were hesitant about the high miles but the FJ Cruiser drives great. We were shopping for our son’s first car and were impressed with the safety features. Blind spots were a concern, but we added mirrors to the side mirrors. We purchased it after one look! It’s a fun car to drive!Sep 12, 2020

I love driving and customizing this car. It has a commanding presence and people notice it. I've been on many trips where I've been stopped by a stranger at a gas station to talk about my car. This is not a car for shy people. Jan 18, 2015

I bought my 08 FJ Cruiser used. The previous owner had bought every option available including fog lights on the roof and bumper, the locking diff with a-trac etc. I really liked the fj's when they appeared in 2007 and decided when it was time for a new vehicle to test drive one. Loved it from the beginning! Immediately after purchase, myself, wife and son made a cross country trip to Colorado ( 2,000 miles one way) to see a family member who was injured in a serious car accident. I have to say that being 6'1 with long legs, this truck was The most comfortable to drive or be a passenger in. If you are looking for a Cadillac ride,,, this is the wrong truck for you, but it does ride nice on the highway. one tank of gas we got 24 mpg! all the rest we averaged around 20 mpg. This truck is solid, heavy duty, and ready to climb, mud, snow and Ice without any mods. I will never own another vehicle. My wife is 5'2 and at first was having trouble seeing until the she discovered the seat lift adjustment, now she loves to drive it.Sep 07, 2013

FJCruiser is for adventurous souls. I like this truck a lot and enjoy my ride every single day. Ample of space to fit in all your junk anywhere you go. Offroad performance is unmatched and equally drives good on the road.
Postive:
Off-roading, reliability, King of the road(u feel), looks good, ample of cargo space.
Negative:
Mileage, suicide doors.
Caution:- this is not a soccer mums SUV.

Fun vehicle to drive. Perfect for mountain terrain; both
on-road and off-road. Braking and handling superb.
Acceleration great in lower gears, good in upper gears.
Gas mileage is excellent. Our Cruiser has 40,000 km and
has not required any special maintenance at all. Totally
reliable vehicle. Jan 22, 2010

I have owned pickup trucks and SUV's, I have heard this FJ gets poor gas milage and on windy days you feel it and I have heard the seats are not comfortable.
I love this vehicle and I call it the all terrain vehicle that will do anything and go anywhere.
If you want really good gas milage buy a small car. If you complain about wind? drive any other SUV or truck and compare. If you don't like the interior? why did you buy this in the first place unless the dealer held a guun to your head.
This is a vehicle that is meant for anything, anytime or anywhere without a problem and they are pretty comfy. I am 6'3" and 245lbs and this has more room than my wifes expensive SUV?
This is a vehicle that will live on longer than any that try to compare and still look good.

Looks cool, should be great for duning, nice power for driving around crazy Doha. There was a little rattle, but it was the fire extinguisher (required equipment in Qatar) not sitting properly in its mount. Fuel is dirt cheap here, so i spend about QR 50 a week on it ($US 13). Fun to drive...no complaints. Jun 27, 2009

Performance: Couldn't ask for better acceleration for a 4300
lb box on wheels. It's got the same V-6 as the base 4Runner,
but variable valve timing for smoother, more responsive
power. Braking and handling are, again, good for its size and
shape. Off-road performance is stellar- I've driven tons of
Jeeps, a hand-full of Land Rovers, and one Hummer H3, and
it will go places (and get out of places) none of the rest
could. Beefier tires and 4x4 helps.
Build Quality: It's a Toyota SUV.
Appearance: judge for yourself. I like it, some of my friends
won't be seen in it. It doesn't look like anything else on the
road. Blind spots took a lot of getting used to. Interior is no
more or less than anybody needs. No leather heated seats or
sunroof, and a cramped back seat, but great head room and
driver/front passenger comfort. Water-resistant washable
floor and cloth seats. NO MAP LIGHTS!! WHAT???
Cost of ownership: On my best tank, i've gotten 22mpg. The
worst has been 16 mpg. Premium fuel will get an extra mile
or two per gallon for most drivers. I used synthetic oil at 15K
miles, and it was $60 for me to do it in my driveway with a
K&N filter. Dino oil changes with a Fram filter are free at the
dealership for 3 years for me.
This car is a blast to drive off-road, and a tolerable road
vehicle as SUV's go.May 01, 2009

I enjoy the drive and safety and looks. There is a jack for my iphone so that I can listen to internet radio in hte car, awesome! The only thing I don't like is the fact that there are not many parts to upgrade my FJ locally. I have to look at pictures closely to determine if I really want to order it online.Mar 22, 2009

The FJ is is so well built and performs so well off-road that
anyone on the trail with you will complain you're going too
fast and their teeth are rattling out of their skulls. All the
while you'll be wondering where everyone behind you
went - they can't keep up.
Shoulda bought an FJ, chump.Jan 04, 2009

The only thing I can see as a drawback on this truck is that it uses only premium unleaded! Otherwise I'm always dying to drive! The gas mileage isnt so bad, I get about 18 in town and about 25 on the highway. Toyota made a very good solid and fun SUV. I'd recommend to this car to anyone!Nov 01, 2008

Power seems about right for this vehicle and looking to get it in the hills as soon as snow is gone. I just don't see the blind spot others are talking about, and I don't haved an issue in this regard. Ride is on the soft-side but, I can live with it! Got the off-road pak with rails and rear locker and hope to try the locker soon. 5' 6" and seats fit me o.k. although, had to jack them up high to get that "just Right" position. In Denver, getting 18 + MPG in town with auto. Tight vehicle and ride is good however, a little wind noise at speeds above 55 MPH. Much better than my 06 Wrangler which, I don't miss!Jan 29, 2008
I have an '08 FJ and I'm looking to put 17' rims on it, I want to know if it will change things like the handling, acceleration, and throttle response due to the transmission and diff being designed for the 16' rims.
