We had a 2006 Odyssey. Spent a lot of money on repairs and maintenance. (I have worked on aircraft for years and learned to developed an ear and a feel for problems.) Yes, our 2006 with over 200K miles is still running and my son now has it. With just my wife and I at home, we decided to look for another Odyssey prior to 2011. What we are finding, is that many older used ones were not taken care of and even though they appeared nice, many have been run into the ground. Several we looked at in the 2007-2010 range didnt even have factory recalls done that we could tell. I could quickly tell by test driving them. Also, our questions like valve adjustments or timing belt changes could not be answered on most. That is important on these vehicles. The engine valves can be heard as the engine runs, especially when started cold. Most do get quieter after warm up. So, if there is one we liked we will return and do a cold start in the morning. That gives me the answer! Transmissions are another expensive concern. We have slowed our search, but after owning one, they can get really expensive if not properly cared for, especially the older ones. Like I said, people see Honda and think they are a great car, they are for the most part and go a long way with PROPER scheduled maintenance. Like I said, most people cant provide the maintenance records and they tend to run them into the ground. So, buyer beware! We still like the older ones, pre 2011 era body style. Like my son said the newer style looks like a funeral wagon. We agree. Oh! when I learned more about the 3.5 engine, it has the solid lifter system, I was surprised. And valve adjustments are NOT inexpensive! Mechanics that really know how to do it properly, are also not inexpensive either! Same with the timing belts. Trans replacement/overhauls can break the piggy bank. We have three cars already. That is enough for two of us. We loved the Odyssey for our monthly grocery shopping trips and those 100 mile trips we took. On our 2006 we also had to replace the front end, rack and pinnion. That turned out to be a $1600 expense. But it drove so much better and felt like new on the road. With all going on, we are reconsidering that vehicle as a replacement. My personal favorite vehicle is our 2003 GMC Yukon. Yes, a gas guzzler and has had only a few minor maintenance issues through my many years of owning and caring for it.

This model is quite basic which is what we were looking for. We have a 2004 Odyssey with 313,000 miles runs great but is due for a timing belt (we have replaced 2 as recommended) and have problems with the automatic side doors. The new one has manual back doors so this was a plus. Our 2004 was a “deluxe” model and the 2007 is basic but this is what we wanted. The timing belt was replaced in April so this was a plus. Good value.
