This most basic of the Town Cars was sold for livery use. Whereas law enforcement and municipal vehicles were generally the Town Car's platform-sharing cousins, the Ford Crown Victoria and the Mercury Grand Marquis, which are not as plush, the Lincoln was better suited to provide the limousine experience.
The necessary features were here: leather seating, air conditioning, power accessories, and most of all a cushy suspension, but the performance-enhancing upgrades found on the Touring and Cartier trims were not needed for ferrying paying passengers to and from the airport or wherever they needed to go.

Starting in 2002 the Signature Touring Sedan became a separate trim; before this model year one could upgrade his Town Car Signature by adding the Touring Sedan Package as an option. This grouping of a couple dozen upgraded and sports-tuned components plus a shorter axle ratio resulted in an output of 15 additional horses and a firmer suspension.
The Signature Touring Sedan's interior was gussied up with some genuine maple trim that the other trims (aside from the Premium Touring Sedan) were not privy to. It is somewhat surprising though that a sunroof was not available on this trim: wouldn't an extra dose of natural light or a view of the stars be a wonderful addition on a car intended for long tours?
A CD player was an option, which seems strange just a few years later, since it's now standard fare on nearly every car out there. Although the optional front-seat heaters definitely fit into the comfort category, the other add-ons that were on the list were not very exciting: mud flaps, a full-sized spare, and daytime running lights.

Not surprisingly, the Town Car's mid-level trim was its best seller for several years running. It had all of the comforts of higher-priced Town Cars, minus a few extra emblems here and there, and until this year (when the Touring Sedan became a distinct trim), the Signature was eligible for a performance upgrade via its Touring options package.
With the Executive trim as of this time being sold merely as a fleet vehicle (for use as hearses, even), the Signature became the base model as far as the individual consumer was concerned. Its 220-horsepower engine and luxury suspension were certainly fine, and the essential luxury items (leather seating, full power accessories, and ample breathing room) were all in place.

What made the Signature Premium so premium had to do with accessories rather than performance. It received the standard 220-horsepower V8 (as opposed to the performance-enhanced edition with 15 more horses), but it came equipped with items that were either optional or unavailable on other Town Cars of that year.
Those items were a sunroof and an upgraded audio system featuring a CD player with changer as well as a subwoofer for those retirees who like to crank the tunes. Heaters for the front seat were optional, as were daytime running lights, to make the big sedan extra visible on those two-lane cruises.

What made a Touring trim so tuned for touring? In Lincoln's eyes the answer was higher performance and a somewhat sportier feel. This was brought on by an array of specially tuned components and configurations (including a shorter axle ratio and firmer suspension) that worked together to boost horsepower on the 4.6-liter V8 from 220 to 235.
An extra helping of bells and whistles played a part, too. The Premium Touring trim's list of standards boasted genuine wood trim inside, plus a sunroof. In addition, the top-shelf audio system came with a CD player (with changer) and a bass-boosting subwoofer to please the music-lovers. To absolutely have it all, the Premium Touring trim purchaser could have opted for mud guards, a full-sized spare, and daytime running lights.

The fanciest Town Car trim lured buyers with its enhanced performance and extra-flashy interior. Some additional passing power and unique Lincoln logos embroidered onto the premium-grade leather seats were well worth the higher MSRP to many Town Car buyers; for their extra coin they even received the requisite Cartier analog clock to keep time in gold-accented splendor, as well as taillights emblazoned with the Lincoln logo.
The extra power came from a grouping of a couple dozen performance-enhancing parts that cooperated with the somewhat firmer suspension and decreased axle ratio to make this and other â??02 Town Car trims sportier than others. The most notable stat was that horsepower increased from 220 to 235 with this set-up.
Although heated front seats and chrome wheels were standard equipment, Cartier buyers had to opt on a CD player and changer but were not eligible for a sunroof, believe it or not.

There was a segment of Town Car buyers who could not be satisfied by the plush Cartier trim. It was for them that the Cartier Premium was configured.
This extra-loaded edition came stacked with higher-grade leather seating, front-seat heaters, a sunroof, and a premium audio system complete with a subwoofer. These treats were added to an already plush list that included chrome wheels, logo-emblazoned taillights, and a Cartier clock rimmed with gold trim.
Of course, the other huge appeal of this trim was the enhanced performance brought about by a special grouping of sports-tuned parts. Together these components raised the 4.6-liter V8's stable of horses to 235, 15 more than the base 220. This resulted in a somewhat sportier feel to this luxury barge, which pleased those drivers who weren't quite satisfied with the floating feel of the original suspension.

Some people simply believe "The bigger, the better," and the extended-wheelbase Town Car helped them to reinforce that. Whether the backseat passengers were family, friends, or livery customers, somebody was going to appreciate the six added inches of rear legroom and the limo-style ambience afforded by the accent lighting and cigar-friendly ashtray, not to mention the separate audio and climate controls for their half of the cabin.
This was the only '02 Town Car that got heated rear seats - and they came standard at that. Of course, as on all incarnations of the Cartier, the niceties included higher-quality leather seats embroidered with special emblems, plus a fancy Cartier analog clock to dress up the instrument panel. Standard chrome wheels added flash to the exterior.
Of course, as the ultimate Town Car, this one was built with the performance-enhanced components, a grouping of nearly two dozen parts tuned for a sportier feel and boost in power. The main result was an additional 15 horses above the standard 220-hp engine, but an all-around firmer feel was the other benefit.
