The 2002 Honda Odyssey is the same minivan design as it has been for the past 3-years. The V-6, 3.5-liter engine is now more powerful with 240-hp. It has quicker acceleration, though may be sluggish going uphill. All 2002 Odyssey models come with an (EBD) Electronic Braking Distribution system that calculates weight distribution inside the vehicle, and will adjust braking action during hard stops. All models feature an optional navigation system.
Owners really enjoy the looks of the Odyssey minivan with the sleek, attractive design. The fact that the 4-wheel independent suspension makes driving smoother, also appeals to many user reviewers. Most drivers expect that by staying with the regular maintenance schedule, this minivan will run dependably for a very long time. The most consistent problem over the years has been a poorly designed transmission, even with the new 5-speed. It has excellent fuel efficiency, low emissions, and with the back seat folded down, tremendous cargo space.
Owner reviews are pretty high for the 2002 Honda Odyssey. Now with standard side airbags, this vehicle has been awarded 5-stars in all crash test results. This minivan comfortably seats seven people, now has an entertainment center with improved speakers, and is probably the best bargain on the market.

I bought my 2002 odyssey in 2010 and it only had 16000 on it. I have gone all over on family vacation in it Now it has 170000 on it and It is still going. No problems. Buy Honda!!!Jan 25, 2024

The Honda Odyssey is a car the works very well for families. I have owned my Odyssey for over 13 years and am very pleased with its performance. The car is very safe and has a 5-star crash safety rating. It also has a comfortable ride and an awesome stereo. The only problem I have encountered with this car is transmission failure as well as a need for a new engine mount. Otherwise, It has great gas mileage. I do an equal amount of city and highway driving, and my Odyssey gets about 24 mpg. I am very pleased with this car and am planning to keep it for many years to come.Dec 31, 2014

I like that It starts and go. I can be alone or hauling my son basketball team. Very easy to drive. Easy in and out for older people. I dislike the style of the van concept in general. It is too boxy.Nov 17, 2014

I like it cause it's the perfect family vehicle and it comes with a fast 3.5 V-Tec V6. I have put a cold air intake in it with a new racing trans and now I want to know how I can lower it 2 inches so I can put my 20 inch tires & wheels on it!!!Sep 21, 2014

Overall a great car to drive around town, but perfect for long trips. Powerful v6 engine, but not great gas mileage. 3rd row seat folds into back creating deep storage and flexible transportation. Power driver's seat and heated front seats.Oct 28, 2013

A family of 5 bought this vehicle yesterday with delight! Not your single bachelor / bachelorette or empty nester's dream car. But for a family, this is a dream car come true. It hauls, it has tons of cup holders for bottles, cups and mugs. removable pilot seats, and instant trunk space by just a few simple adjustment. Accelerates very well. Brakes good, handles good for a mini van. The appearance is
typical of a mini van. Has over 157k miles on it so the noises are expected. Fun is

What can I say....this is a sweet 240HP and it lives up to that....great power and the transmission is good too...This 5 speed auto tranny was introduced in the 2002 - 2004 models......giving u decent fuel consumption for a 3.5ltr engine...definitely the best in its class...smooth and firm leather interior, DVD, ....great for the kids to stay focus for the entire ride. The cargo space is greeaaaattttt!!!! ...even with full passenger load...when used to carry cargo alone, with all seats down and ,middle seats removed..u will not believe the stuff it can move..i carried both a love seat and a 3 seater leather sofa at the same time and shut the back door...awesome!!!!Aug 06, 2010

its pretty big i would only recommend it for those who want to take it on a long trip but maintenince is a whole nother story its very expensive and many things go wrong with it as a matter of fact the other day the actual brake pad broke in half. so not the worlds best van but picks up kids from soccer practice.Jul 04, 2009

acceleration, 242hp, 5spd auto, it's freakin fast for a minivan
braking, It stops, brakes vastly superior to my old Voyager
handling, Not bad for a 4500lb minivan

Cost of Ownership –
20-22mpg in summer, 16-17mpg in winter and while towing
Only minivan I've ever changed the plugs in 20 minutes, timing belt took 2 hours, very easy to work on, has well over 100,000 miles and no problems.

Obviously it isn't an Odyssey!
It is a buggy with a 2002 Honda CBR954RR engine. It is custom built and fun to play in!
The only thing I don't like is the single arm front suspension. I am planning on rebuilding the front end with double A arm setup and moving the shocks outboard.Oct 14, 2008

Had the best reviews at the time, and best interior space. Transmission was a complete nightmare, and despite being replaced once by Honda (after a bitter fight), it failed a 2nd time. Not at all what I was hoping for when plunking down 35 grand on a Honda. My last Honda purchase... period.
I bought it for the powerful engine, nimble handling (for a minivan) and excellent braking. A nice design on the exterior matched with an efficient design on the interior. Unfortunately, nothing could make up for the lack of quality from the transmission. The final nail in the coffin was Honda of North America's denial of responsibility for my first failed transmission (within the first 70k miles) and the 2nd (after another 40k miles). Only 1 dealer (out of over 10) stepped up to fight the corporate head office to get me a replacement transmission. Kudos to Robertson Honda for stepping up! However, one shiny dealership is not enough to save Honda from being thrown off my short-list of future car purchases.Jul 07, 2008

This family car thinks it's an NSX. With similar 24-valve V-6s and VTEC, the torque is just amazing. While doing 85MPH, a downshift to 3rd gear produces neck snapping torque which instantly launches this heavy vehicle to 110MPH. That is, while carrying 6 people !!! Will blow away all SUVs. We bought a Honda, because of its supposed reliability. We poured hundreds of dollars into keeping current on all of the regularly scheduled maintenance and took it in for the second gear transmission recall service when that notice came as well. We did all of this to avoid what We are going throug now. In spite of doing everything "right" on our part, our transmission failed at 91,000 miles...NOT what we expected from a Honda...and a $3900 repair bill. Honda WAS going to pay for all but $850 of it, but then changed their mind when they found out we bought our Odyssey from Military Car sales while serving our country overseas. We are very unhappy with Honda, and will probably never buy a Honda again.Feb 09, 2008

Our Odyssey has been very dependable and comfortable, although transmission did have recall repairs. Too bad we can't just turn off the 5th-gear overdrive sometimes, although the computer sensor does a great job of compensating shift patterns when I tow varying loads.

transmission problem
was pulling a empty utility trailer at 75 mph and noticed engine starting to overheat and could smell trans fluid leaking but no visable leaks anywhere, pulled over and checked fluid was 3 inches up on dip stick. got back on road back to 75 same thing slowed to 60 temp came down and no more fluid smell but fluid is burned, drives around town perfect no issues, shifts great, no leaks and temp is normal????

Honda Odyssey Check Engine Light
2002 Honda Odyssey check engine light came on with TCS light. Rough idle. They told me the code says misfire on several cylinders. They replaced all spark plugs, coils, and cleaned ground wires. Problem came back the next day so they said the EGR valve and PCV valve needs to be replaced. They also replaced the battery telling me it was weak. Tonight the problem came back but now CEL is flashing and it doesn't want to run. They are cleaning out my checking account and it still is not right. Thoughts on what is wrong?
