In 2002, Chrysler introduced the Special package of the 300M. The Special added several performance upgrades, shifting the 300M's focus from luxury to sport. The 300M itself was originally conceived as such a car, but its initial sport-tuned suspension was readjusted for a smoother ride. On the Special, 18 inch wheels were added, along with 18 inch Michelin Pilot Sport tires. The firmer suspension returned, and more powerful brakes were attached.
The 300M Special used the same engine as its counterpart. However the 3.5 liter V6 was tweaked for more horsepower and torque. Five additional horses brought the total count to 255, and torque rose from 250 to 258 pound-feet. The 0-60 time was shaved down to seven seconds, but the 19/27 mpg fuel economy did not suffer. larger brakes halted the Special from 60 mph in just 114 feet.
The Special trim sharpened the styling and offered a more road-responsive feel, and most drivers were pleased. This sport-tuned version did not provide the same ride comfort, and the tires created a lot of additional road noise. However, the Special's handling was far superior.
