Emphasizing a sportier style and performance, the 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix focuses most of its attention on the powerful GT and GTP trims, and leaves the base SE sedan for fleet and rental sales. Proof? The SE comes in sedan only, with a 3.1-liter, 175-hp V6. The GT and GTP is either a sedan or a coupe, with a gruntier 3.8 V6 that gets 200-hp in the GT and 240 in the supercharged GTP. A 4-speed automatic overdrive transmission is standard across the Grand Prix lineup. The 2001 Grand Prix puts a new grille on the SE and makes OnStar standard on GTPs. A Wide Track Smart Package for the SE adds a spoiler. The Special Edition Package for GT and GTP models adds a rear spoiler, hood scoops. shiny dual exhaust tips, and the requisite badging. As part of its performance orientation, Pontiac has given the Grand Prix more swooping body lines and sits it low to the ground. Inside, the cockpit-like front seat also sits low in front of an overly busy instrument cluster that's lit orange at night. Though the 2001 Grand Prix is big enough for five passengers, four would be most comfortable. A fold-down armrest in back doubles as a pass-through to the spacious trunk. Though it's no sports car by any means, the 2001 Grand Prix is plenty fast, with terrific sporty handling and smooth acceleration and shifting, say owners. They praise the engine performance, along with the roominess and overall sleek looks. The biggest complaint seems to be about the cheaply-made plastic parts, which break or fall off or just don't seem in keeping with the exterior styling. It also tends to rattle because of this. Rear legroom can be cramped, the dashboard is too cluttered, and low ground clearance means scraping the front end.

I owned a 98 and it was great. Never had any problems with it except for the pressure sensor for the a/c. Other then that it was great. I loved driving it daily and racing it on the weekends. I would have kept it but family out grew the vehicle. Sep 26, 2021

It is a great car, until things start having problems. Then it seems like a chain reaction into more and more problems. However, this is a by the car basis. I used to own a 97 grand prix, and drove it over 200,000 miles with hardly any problems. And the last couple thousand of that were after I got in a wreck with it. If you can find one of these that has been well maintained, with decent miles, for a good price-well then you might find a winner. But I would definitely take a mechanic with you to look it over before you buy it.Sep 19, 2014

Car drives, and performs amazingly. Only negatives I can think of are the build quality. Several parts tend to fail, and some of the designs seem poor. The cost is pretty high, only due parts that always seem to break a lot. Over all I love it.Dec 22, 2010

Performance: Pretty quick for a 3.3, beaten a couple mazdas, civics, preludes, and cobolts. Build quality: Quite, Smooth, and Drives like a dream. Appearance: Nice sporty look even for a four door. Interior is clean and uniform. Now has cold air intake and plan to get it supercharged. Cost of Ownership: $38 to fill up and using only 30mpg hw and 24 city. Easy to maintain smaller engine allows for easy maintanance space. Fun Factor: Very fun to drive and pretty quick without using your entire tank of fuel in the process.Oct 21, 2010

Comfortable, reliable, and had pretty much every option.
Heat and A/C worked great, and dual zone was nice for a passenger.
I like the way it looks, though the interior left something to be desired.

I love this car, yeah it may be the standard stripped model and it does not have a racing engine, but for what I paid for, this car is amazing. Since my purchasing of the car on September 2, 2009, I have put in a 300 watt 2-way subwoofer in the trunk, a brand new kenwood 300 watt stereo with AMP, a new full exhaust, new tires, some blue accented lights inside and more. It has a great strong build and The body style has alot of potential. I painted the front under grill and the side skirts semi-flat black and Im going to do a solid stripe along the whole bottom. This car runs amazing and very comfortably seats 5 people. Gas mileage is great, I get around 22-27 mpg on average. Putting 93 in the tank instead of 87 really brings out the power in the car, you really feel a pull when you hit the gas and it takes off. The engine has a pretty distinct sound for not having almost anything done to it but a new stainless steel exhaust and some minor work to the block, but it sounds great when you really hit the gas. The build quality is pretty good, My only problem with mine so far is the front bumper. It is a little bit shaky, mostly because it has been backed up into about 5 times since september 09 when I bought it. But nonetheless it has a sloid build and a great look. The car is really fun to drive, being so comfortable and big you get a great smooth ride and the handling, especially with my Yokohoma touring S tires on it, is flawless. It has really good acceleration for a 200hp car and can brake rather quickly and the handling is what makes this car. It has a good build quality depends on how well you take care of it but tends to have problems. The gt and up models all look rather good. the cost is rather cheap considering its power it gets around 22-25mpg avg between city and highway. My first car was a 4 door Grand Prix GT. unfortunatly it was totalled in and accident but I knew I wanted another one just like it. The one I have now is a Silver 2001 GT Special Edition. The second time around I found EXACTLY what I was looking for the first time. I love the acceleration off the line. Braking has saved me a couple times and the handling, well, let's just say I've taken it out on a road course (both the sedan and the coupe) and had a blast! I was driving and yelling all at the same time. It is a soild built car. Repairs are typical of an older car along with the maintenance. Maintenance is relativly low as it is a daily car. Gas mileage for what this car is capable of is great. Highway I normally get between 30 and 35 (it pays to take good care of your car)
The car looks as sharp as a GTP (most people think it is a GTP) The added factory Special Edition package makes the exterior look sleek. No body rust and it has been WI/MI kept since it came off the lot! Interior is close to showroom condition. The two toned leather and all the additional options (heads up, heated seats, dual controls, etc.) make the interior as comfortable to be in as higher end sedans.
Only real drawback is the low clearance-I will occasionally drag when pulling into driveways.Aug 12, 2009

I really enjoy this car because you have to room and space to modify. I bought mine stock and it had decent horsepower and i loved the look of the car, it looks sleek but mean. I think GM did a great job with the stability of the car, there is no lean at all. I havent encountered any mechanical issues at all and I have done a lot of modifications to it, that just shows it has a strong built motor that can handle more horsepower than what it was designed for. The car is very fun to drive and show off. Stock, the gas mileage is decent for a large sedan but now that it is modded its a little iffy. I enjoy the car tremendously and it is the best purchase I have ever made. I own the GTP Special Edition and love it, it definatly will not be traded in. The super charger puts out 10 lbs of boost which is really good for a super charger that is stock to a car. The car hauls and sounds great, the exhaust they manufactured with the car is wonderful, you can actually hear it!! Got 177,000 miles on it and runs good. Just need some routine maintenance to keep to running good. The car is very stable and really hugs the corners thanks to the traction control. Hope to get many more miles on it or win the lotto and buy a Ferrari!Jul 16, 2009

The 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix GT. This is a transporter that lives up to its
domestic heritage and more. Domestics have been known for their power and
size - lots of passenger space and trunk space. All the creature comforts a man
needs to become one with his machine and ergonomics to keep up with the
Europeans. Good styling and great looking to rival the Japanese and European
competition. Handling is quite responsive and acceleration is quite good - with
the potential of adding a supercharger. The Series II 3.8L powerplant has the
ability to be efficient on gas mileage if one is able to resist the urge to race
between destinations with or without TCS aka Launch Control. Winter handling is
improved with traction control and anti-lock brakes, however this front wheel
drive like so many others has a tendency to understeer on icy roads when
exceeding the safe speed limit - also the low ground clearance makes this a good
candidate to retire for the winter months. I'd own a second one of these should
the opportunity arise - this second one with a Ram Air Hood Scoop & Intake

I've had three Grand Prixs. This one is lacking on the acceleration dept.it just takes it a little longer to accelerate then my last one but it handles well. There is no rust a few minor scratches, can barely see them unless your really looking. Very fun to drive. Very good on gas. Needed all around pads and rotors, the headlights are also fogged over as are the rest of the grand prixs. Yes, i would recommend this car to my friends. Feb 04, 2009

Love just about everything about it, except for the fact that it is not supercharged and that it's FWD. Acceleration is decent, will be getting a Turbocharger and Race Built Tranny (Hopefully) soon. This car is all around awesome. It's great in any weather and goes fast if you want it to or slow around town. The only downfall is the low gas milage and having to put premium gas in it. Other then it being expensive to drive i cant say anything bad about the car.Jul 22, 2008

I have had so much trouble with this car. Before I had it a full year, 9 months, I had to take it to Pontiac to have a new (re built) transmission put in. It took 6 weeks to get my car back. Then almost a year later, more transmission problems. According to the dealer they called in the Pontiac rep. and he didn't have a clue. THen a few months after the warranty expires I had to take it in for more transmision work. Now I am getting ready to take it in for more transmission work. And the car seems to eat tires. The orginial set got less than 20,000 miles and right now at 99,000, I am on my 4th set of tires. I have tires rotated and balanced every 3-4000 miles.Jan 16, 2008

I am the second owner of my 2001 grand prix gt. I personally believe this car is over looked by many .Out of the box this car handles reasonably well,loaded with options standard,great gas mileage for a large car and decent comfort.......$8200.00 used come on.............
Well did you know that there are lots of performance parts available for this car? And they make a huge difference in performance, handling and braking.GM performance makes handling and braking packages for the g body.ZZPerformance manufactures custom bolt on parts for the GP. They also modify stock parts to increase HP on the 3800.I personally have purchased many of these parts.My GP has picked up at least 100 hp.It handles as well as a BMW of its size, and stops on a dime.It still gets 28mpg when my foots not in it........Thats just my opinion.
And by the way I have not had one major problem with this car.

I bought this car brand new. I have had nothing but major problems with it, since it had only 18K on it. It is always things that mechanics tell me I shouldn't have wrong with it, with the amounts of mileage that I have on it. I had a Grand AM before it, that was also nothing but trouble. That one always had electrical problems. I made a promise that I will NEVER, ever again, buy an american car, and am sticking to it. I will be looking at Honda's this week. Bose Premium Sound System/Amplifier ?
I'm trying to replace the stock radio with an aftermarket radio. I'm using a Scosche GMDA wiring harness, I can't get the radio to turn on but the illumination works. It says "For Bose eguipped vehicles,must be used with the Scosche FAI-3A Bose Premium Sound interace". I can find anything in the manual or anywhere on the car if it is eguipped? Do I need the to have the aftermarket radio even turn on or is it for the amplifier(if eguipped ?) to turn on or both ?
