As proof that the Grand Prix is trying to beef up Pontiac's roots as a performance car brand, it adds a newer and nastier trim to its lineup in midyear 2005. The 2005 Grand Prix, a four-door large mid-sized sedan, now comes in base, GT, GTP, and the ultra-sporty GXP. The GXP is powered by a new 5.3-liter, 303-hp V8 engine, compared to the 3.8 V6 in the other trims, which get 200-hp in the base and GT and 230-hp in the supercharged GTP. All are paired with the 4-speed auto tran. The 2005 Grand Prix GXP comes standard with a stiffer suspension, Stabilitrak stability control, and TAPshift, which you can still get on the GTP as part of the racier Comp-G packaage. Leather seats and 18-inch wheels combine with the cockpit-like dash and low-slung seats to fulfill the everyday commuter's dream of driving a race car. All 2005 Grand Prix models feature fold-down rear and front passenger seats, cruise control, driver information center, fog lights and power windows and locks. As you go up the ladder, you add power seats, heads-up display, and leather seats. ABS and side impact airbags are standard on all but the base model. New in 2005, Onstar is standard on all models. Dual-zone climate control, a DVD navigation system, and remote start are new options this year. The new GXP approaches the sporty performance of the GTO, turning the 2005 Grand Prix away from just being a family car. Drivers love its speed and power, though comment that the ride can feel rough. Overall, Grand Prix owners agree that handling is smooth, acceleration instant and responsive, and gas mileage is good for a mid-size. They love the large trunk and the heads-up display. On the downside, is the cheap-looking interior and cluttered layout, the lack of headroom, a cramped backseat (particularly in the GXP), no lumbar support in the front seats, and the need for a manual transmission.

My Pontiac Gran Prix had 237,000 miles on it and ran fantastic until a snow plow totalled it. The V6 will run forever. 200 horsepower is more than enough! About 23 mpg combined. Mar 22, 2022

The 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix is both a capable machine and performer. The low stance and Wide Track design helps keep the car stable in adverse road conditions. This all comes together nicely when your behind the wheel reassuring the driver they are in full control.
If your a smoker youll quickly notice the size and placement of the ashtray is less than convenient. Among the dwindling niche of drivers still clinging to this archaic activity you will often hear it called the smallest ashstray ever put in a car.

I have had the car over 1 1/2 yrs. It handles nicely for a car its size. It isnt " numble", but doesnt wallow either. Took it on 5 hr trip up to mtns for ski trip last feb 2012, did nicely in some very tight turns and iffy road conditions. The auto headlights/DRL's work nicely, the heated seats are wonderful in the winter and warm up fairly quickly.
I get addicted to how easy it is to change stations or songs with the steering wheel radio controls. When not in my car, find myself hunting for the buttons.
Power front drivers seat with multi-way back and front support is nice. Like to pump up the lumbar and lean into it. Steering is solid, not to mushy, bit of understeer but only when actually pushing in a corner, which I generally dont do.
Have had no mechanicals in this time frame. Battery died, but, thats completely separate. The cruise control does get a little twitchy, when trying to resume after tap on the brakes, if you dont hit it just right, you have to reset it. Not a big deal, and only real electronic glitch I have run into so far.
Gas mileage is above what EPA says I should get by a fair margin. EPA is something like 19/26 mpg, even putting from store to store, I have never gone under 23.5 mpg, and hwy I have hit over 29 mpg, usually avg hwy 28-28.5.
For a 3.8l V-6 not set for fuel economy, in a car its size and weight, not bad at all.
Style isnt bad. Interior room is exceptional. Lots of room in the back seat, and the trunk is enormous. Folding rear seats, and you can take enough stuff with you for two people to go on a 15 day romp across the U.S., and have room for souvenirs . The leather isnt "Cadillac " plushy, but it is pretty comfortable, for a car in this price range.
4 wheel disc brakes, car comes down quick when you lean on the brake pedal, never had an issue there either.
Sunroof is powered, nice option to have on fall days. No problem with leaks or movement. These cars in GT form or higher ( you have 3 trim levels with a v-8 also in the highest trim level ) are very loaded. Only thing missing is an MP3 player or aux input. That I do miss, and would consider replacing the stereo for that accessory.
But the stereo itself, a Monsoon, had 7 speakers, a nice range, lots of options for tweaking the sound, stations, etc.
Ok, on the whole, this is a very solid sport sedan. The engine has plenty of pep, it handles nicely for its size and weight. You have a great deal of room, large supportive seats, smooth transmission, loads of accessories, dual climate controls and dual heated seats. Prices on this car, in solid shape, are reasonable to cheap when compared to pricier vehicles. I dont think you can go wrong with this car, either as your main driver, or as a nice, sporty, but affordable second car or students car.

My fiancee owns this 05 Pontiac Grand Prix. Cargo Room: Fold Down Back Seats + the passenger seat folds down flat as well - (fits longer items), so she can stuff it full when traveling out of town (will hold an 8' ladder and be able to close the trunk lid. Adult sized bicycle fits too). The cargo space of this car is what sold her on it. She loves it - I don't - Why? GM designed a lower roof line to make this car more visually attractive, BUT I'm 6' tall at 240lbs, its a pain getting in and out of this car. In addition: even though the seat is slid all the way back, it's not comfortable for me to either drive nor ride in.
On the plus side: Traction Control for winter driving. Wide Track technology provides excellent handling and stability for hugging the road in turns, and normal driving. Visibility is very good. It comes with the legendary 3800 engine as standard equipment - Believe me (as a retired ASE cert. mechanic for 20 yrs) - the 3800 lives up to it's reputation! Dependable, strong, and with plenty of power for this reasonably priced 4 door family sedan. The down side: Horrible design flaw when GM put the Bright Headlight indicator in the center of the instrument gauges - This bright blue indicator light is as bright as an LED flashlight being shined in your face! Serious driver distraction at night. I resolved this safety issue by taping a small piece of black electrical tape over the area (looks odd, but had to be done). Has started in 50 below weather (without an engine warmer or being plugged in) - doesn't run as well in very hot weather, but neither do I. Over all it's a good, affordable, family sedan. I would recommend it to anyone with kids + stuff to haul.. just make sure you're under 5' 10 tall and you'll be fine. Feb 23, 2013

I like the extra space in the trunk as well as the Gt pull when pressing the gas is needed . Roomy rear seat area as well as the convenient trunk release on the drivers door the delayed door lock switch

It has a good amount of power, probably just what you would expect for a
3.8L V6, but you totally pay for it in city gas mileage. I've been getting under
20mpgs in the city, but I get slightly over 25 on the highway which is very good
in my opinion. Cost to own is great, no complaints here... I bought it in 2009
with 85,000 miles on it, and right now it has 120,000 miles. I haven't had to do
much work on it, other than oil changes, tire rotations, new tires, brakes, and
wheel bearings. All of the mechanical work I've had to do to it is wear and tear.
As far as appearance goes, I think it's a great looking car. The only complaint I
have is the wheels. I bought mine with steel wheels and hubcabs and those are
just about the ugliest things imaginable. The interior styling is great, but plasitc-
y just like all GM's. The fabric interior and carpeting has held up very well.
And yes, it's fun to drive. Don't get me wrong, it's not a fast car... it'll get up
and going pretty well but I've play raced and had my ass kicked by Eclipses and
Civics. I think in the end it's just too heavy, but off the line acceleration is

This Pontiac Grand Prix GXP has to be the best handling front wheel drive sedan in its class. With the 5.3L V8 it has all the power you need to have fun and it has factory Brembo designed brakes to bring it all to a halt. With the displacement on demand it doesn't get to bad of fuel mileage. I average 22-25 on my hilly 20 mile commute to work. Don't overlook this car when looking at other performance sedan cars.Jan 08, 2012

I have had this car for about 5 yrs now and i love it. i have a tow package on it and i use it to tow a small trailer from time to time. this car pulls great and you do not even know you are towing anything. I have never had a major issues with this car the only thing I can really talk about is some ABS issues but other than that a great car.Jun 26, 2011

It was a great car, no mechanical problems except for the brakes. Performance wise, this car is a champ, it kept up there with the Audi's could show off a bit leaving black marks, but it wasn't too out of control. Only downsides, is that the base model doesn't have ABS or Traction control, but oh well, and the interior looked nice, but felt cheap, like a plastic dash.Nov 01, 2009

Nice looking but the hard lines of the front lights do not fit the curves of the rest of the car. Needs to sit lower to have muscular stance. Nice power and handling for base car. The car worked great, I got my license when it has 17,000 miles and two winters worth of Michigan weather on it. It functioned great for the 11 months I got to drive it, and I absolutely loved its performance and looks. A great daily driver for performance and was well worth its cost.Jan 12, 2009

I like my car alot. There's nothing really special about it, but it's nice. It's got get-up-and-go, but before I got it I drove a 4 cyl and this is a 6 cyl. I like the large gauges on the inside of the car and the digital oil life meter. It gets pretty good gas mileage for a larger car. I'd say about 27 mpg highway. Sep 03, 2008

Great balance of comfort, performance, and
economy. These car's (GTP or GXP) are quick and
handle well for a 4 door mid/full sized car. The fuel
economy is better than average for a car in this
performance bracket, however, don't expect it to
get hybrid like MPG. The engine is a 3800 series III
which has proven itself to be one of the most
reliable motors on the market. The car has a fairly
stiff suspension for better cornering performance
but is still very drivable for long trips (for me, it is a
good balance).
The interior isn't luxurious (mine has grey leather),
it is designed to have a sporty performance feel and
has Pontiac distinctiveness. The instrument cluster
is well designed and has a mean looking red
backlight. Some of the other interior elements have
a cheep plastic feel but it blends in well enough
with the utilitarian performance look.
I find the front bucket seats to be adequately
comfortable but the back seat is very cramped for a
car in this class. If that is a factor for you, look at
the Impala SS.
Overall a good car, functional, fun to drive,

Great handling, pickup, I picked up the GT2 so it's fully loaded! Performance isn't really much of an option, yet...it still contains the GM 3800 series motor. I paid $18,660 roughly for the car and it is the best thing I have owned so far! But I have a thing for silver pontiacs!!!Jun 29, 2008

With this car, even the base model is really fast. I think that they tried too hard to make it perform good though, and didnt spend enough time on the interior. It has really good pickup for example if I'm gonna pass someone, and im going say 50 when i start to pass, by the time I get back over, I'm going 90 easily without even noticing. Apr 03, 2008

Ive had my car for almost 3 years and it drives so nice, it is really a heavy duty car. It gets a lot of use on the road as I travel alot. The sun roof has leaked and left watermarks on the inside roof. the paint scratches easily. The interior is comfortable. Nov 06, 2007

why does my charging system failure light come on
Here are details. the battery is good as well as the alternator. whenever I start the car it dies out and the light "charging system Failure" comes on. I will try to start it again and it starts. if I give gas on the first time it might start but I know that is not how it is suppose to work. When this happens it also resets the sequence of the display beginning with the date. I always have the mileage on there. can any one help?
