What should I check if my car won't start and I have a good battery?

The Volkswagen Beetle received relatively few additions for the 2000 model year. The only notable upgrades were an improved anti-theft system, and traction control was added to the high-end GLX 1.8T Turbo trim package.
Other than that, standard equipment included power steering, power brakes, power windows and door locks, power heated mirrors, front and side airbags, air conditioning, cruise control, fog lights, and keyless entry. A five-speed manual transmission was standard while a four-speed automatic was available as an option. In addition, features such as leather seats and a sunroof were available as options on most versions of the 2000 Beetle, and as standard equipment on the GLX 1.8T Turbo.
Generally, drivers liked the car's handling, fuel economy, roominess (for a small car), and safety features. Others noted that it had some visibility problems out the back and sides, and some complained about the placement of some interior features. Still, most drivers raved about the New Beetle, appreciating its reliability, distinctiveness, and "fun" factor.

From under my 2004 vw beetle give had water at a stay pace drip from the skid plate. Its the gasket seal in the water pump. After sitting awhile, or through season temperature exposure seals and gaskets may dry out, crack even wear away, leading to leakage. In the case of a water pump however, this actual part will require replacement vs repair.Aug 12, 2022

had the car since 2003. bought from vw dealer off lease. put 170k miles on it and still going strong. unique car - kind of cult-ish. get the nod of approval from the other "oil burners" at the diesel pump. My brother was recently in the market for a new vehicle. Bambi and the front end of his A4 didnt agree. I talked up the TDI and he ended up getting a new Jetta TDI. He loves it.May 10, 2015

I love the power of this car, you put it in second gear and tromp on it and it puts you back in your seat. It runs and handles great. Does have almost100,000 miles but thats nothing for a VWMar 11, 2014

Love driving it around but sometimes can be a little cantankerous. Has some quirky features that seem to make things more complex than they should be like adjustable headlight position and turning the key to the left in the door winds the window down. Don't see the point. But overall I enjoy driving it so it's mostly love.Oct 31, 2013

Good power for a 4 cylinder. Loaded with nice features that you normally don't find in a small/compact vehicle and roomy interior. Poor location of the exterior mirrors creates blind spots when turning - VW lowered the mirrors on later models.Jun 19, 2013

I've had this car for two years, I drive it almost every day. It gets great MPG especially with gas prices being what they are. The clutch is the one thing I hate, and it takes it a while to get up to speed but overall I love this car and would recommend a Beetle to anyone. They're so cute! Plus it's really entertaining to watch people punch each other as you go by, and little kids always love you.May 25, 2013

I really love this car. Now I drive a truck due to my lifestyle and no longer need this one. I plan on buying another VW Beetle in the Fall of 2013. They do tend to run a little rough like a go cart, so if you need a luxury ride, this car is not for you.Sep 26, 2012

My daughter got tired of repairing the electrical system. This is the classic Beetle Turbo. The car was fun to drive. Ratings based upon the car when it was functioning. It would be neccesary to check out all internal mechanical componants for possible repair after sitting 8 or 9 years. Once rehabbed this would be a great car to own. Aug 25, 2012

The beetle might be fun to drive, if it stays out of the shop long enough!!!!! There was a recall on the timing chain but we didn't know it until after we had to replace our engine because ours broke. Volswagen wouldn't do anything about engine repair except an offering of $250 credit toward a NEW Beetle. They weren't thrilled about my suggestion of where to put their offer. Mar 19, 2011

I don't have one at the moment... It is adorable and It has its up's and downs... It is great for in town driving and is great for warmer weather. I wouldn't drive it in the heavy rain or in heavy snow.Aug 26, 2010

Lots of problems surfaced recently. Both windows have had problems
with their regulators and motors both need to be replaced. I have had to
replace a headlamp it fell out!! and now i have to replace my both tail

It will do 0-60 in 7.5 with a performance chip. It has a great turning radius. I have a 12 inch 500 watt sub and there are no rattles. It gets 46-55mpg depending on the season with a manual transmission.Mar 22, 2010

great gas mileage (about 40MPG) and cruising range(500+ miles), 5speed is fun to
drive, does great on curvy mountain roads. maintainence is fairly cheap, but Parts
are outrageously expensive when you do have to buy them. its turbo diesel power
surprises people on the inside and outside == just rolled 200K miles and took it on

The earlier generation of Beetles were practical, easy to repair. I learned to drive on one.

I dislike the cup-holders. I also dislike you have to
take parts off to do the oil change. I like the 1.8T
engine it gives it a go. It doesn't get great gas mileage
and eats the premium gas from SHELL.. But thats part

my car is a desiel :) i absolutely LOVE it..
it runs great, has lots of get up n go .. my only thing is, if u work on it urself ..some things in the engine r a little difficult to get to, and the tail lights are a pain to get out to change the light bulbs.. until uve done it once ;)

I love my car, it cute, fast, and fun to drive. the only complaint i have is tht the factory window motors are bad. in my current and pervious bug i had to replace the $300 window motors 3 times between the two. also, some of the plastic trim pieces on the interior break and scratch easily. overall i love my car, after all, no car is perfect.Jul 04, 2009

Actually, it's a 5spd Turbo S 1.8T----in YELLow! It's cute as hell, decently fast, and is easily spotted in a parking lot. It will make you smile:)! It had 57k on it when I bought it, just rolled 64k, not too shabby for a 2000 (for what I paid for it!!!!!..can you say, "stolen":))))) I love my Beetle and even created a fan site for VW new beetle owners. Oh yeah, it's name is Yellow Submarine!!!! It's a blast to drive (get the 5-spd), gets about 30mpg highway, 26-28 city. Handles like a go-cart, although I've noticed a bit of body roll(might just be taking the turns a wee fast though;)). Maintenace costs......we'll as long as you keep up with the regular maintenace, as for any vehicle, this car is relitively inexpensive if you have the know-how. Just don't break something, VW parts are NOT cheap. Which brings me to quality....VW is known for it's quality and reliability, and the Beetle is no exception. I absolutely love my bug...I have had it for four years now. I have hardly had any problems with it other than normal, routine maintenance. It has plenty of airbags, and is really safe. The new beetles are built very well. A couple of things I dislike about the new beetles are: lots of blindspots, and they are really low to the ground and tend to scrape easily. This car has very good acceleration and very good gas mileage. Over all the new beetles are really good cars, I am just kinda wanting something different after 4 1/2 years.Aug 04, 2008

It's the worst handling thing I've ever had but it gets me where I'm going and has been as reliable as the Rock of Gibraltar. I wouldn't get another one but you can't beat a VW. I'm sold on VW and would recommend them.May 10, 2008

I had a 2000 VW New Beetle. The color was Vapor, which was a limited edition of 2000. VW
described Vapor as "blue that has seen a ghost." People would stop & stare at my car &
one would say, "I love that white bug!" & the other one would say, "No, it's blue." "No,
white." Etc.
My car was sold to me as a regular VW New Beetle. The day after I brought it home I
popped the hood to admire the engine. And yes, there it was, sprawling in big white
letters across the engine:
TURBO.
I felt like Mister Pennybags, the Monopoly icon, when the Community Chest card informs
him that he just won second prize in a beauty contest.
Believe me when I tell you, this car could GO. You put your big toe down lightly on the gas
pedal & plah-DOW! Off that car went. It was a gem.
About 2 months after I bought the car (new from the dealer), the passenger side window
fell into the door. The car was under warranty so the repair was free. About a year later
VW recalled the 2000 New Beetles because of this problem.
When the car was about 5 years old, the passenger seat came off-track. It kept getting
worse. We took the car in about a year after this problem started & VW said it would cost
$2000 to fix.
In 2006 my husband decided he wanted a new car. He was driving a 2002 Honda CRV. So
he took my bug & traded it in for a 2006 Acura TSX *stifling yawn*. He has no idea, but
when he drove it out of our driveway to trade it in, I cried. I felt like Jemaine when Sally
broke up with him.
Now I'm driving the 2002 Honda CRV.

I bought this car the first year the New Beetle came out. Surprising pretty roomy and comfortable on the inside. At the time it was rare and definitely turned a lot of heads. It had it first year car whoas. Power windows has issues, steering wheel paint came off on my hands, seats look tattered after only a few months of ownership. I live at 9000 feet and the diesel fuel likes to gel at below 0. At some point I will need to install an engine heater. This vehicle is my second to date I also own a 2003 which runs incredible. The 2000 has also got some turbo issues as if cuts out and loses power. Sep 19, 2007

drivers door won't open from inside
i pull on the inside handle to open but nothing. I took off panel and the cable keeps coming unhooked. Any ideas instead of replacing the cable. Door opens fine from the outside nd locks with key as well.

How do I turn off an alarm on a 2000 VW Beetle if I don't have a remote?
The key is no longer unlocking the door (although...it will lock it occasionally) and when I start the car the alarm goes off for 30 seconds. I've tried looking at the inside fuse panel to see if one of those would deactivate the alarm, but no luck. I have not tried the fuse box under the hood and don't know that I would recognize the symbol for it. Thanks for any help you might be able to offer (except for selling it). Frances

Help VW beetle 2000 key fob won't work, alarm issues
My 2000 beetles key fob died, not battery issue I need it reprogrammed and that's going to cost a pretty penny, so right now I open the driver door with the key, put the key into the ignition as fat as possible and turn to prevent the alarm from sounding. I'm trying to find a different solution just until I've the money to fix the key which will be soon but not yet! Would it work if I pulled the horn fuse out or would that do something horrendous? I'm looking for a short fix and need help asap thanks everyone!
