1997 Mazda MX-6 Preview summaryImage

For its final year in production, Mazda's MX-6 sport coupe was available in two versions. The base (or standard) MX-6 was equipped with a 118-horsepower, 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine, while the higher-end LS version was powered by a 164-horsepower, 2.5-liter V6. A five-speed manual transmission was standard, while a four-speed automatic was optional. Standard features for the base model included power brakes, power windows, power door locks, and power exterior mirrors, as well as dual airbags, cruise control, a tilt steering wheel, and an AM/FM/cassette audio system. The LS added such features as air conditioning and a sunroof, as well as fog lights, an anti-theft alarm system, and alloy wheels. Options included anti-lock brakes, a CD player, and leather seats (the latter for the LS version only). Better gas mileage was one improvement that could have made the MX-6 better, drivers noted. The backseat was also cramped, making this a tricky car for families. However, drivers liked the MX-6's styling, responsiveness, handling, performance, reliability, and ride.

--Performance: awesome acceleration, shocks a lot of guys in their Civics. Brakes are pretty good, and the only car that I've driven that handles better is a Mini Cooper S. --Build Quality: these cars are VERY well built, it's not uncommon to hear of them lasting for up to 170k. I've not had to replace a single part on this car yet, and I've had it since June, 2009. The only rattle is the rear deck inside the car, it's a large plastic piece, and is a little loose. --Appearance: The outside looks ok, with a front lip, rear bumper extensions, new wheels, and a lowering kit, the car would look great! Supra taillights are also a popular mod for this car. Interior is pretty nice as well, everything is well-placed. --Cost of Ownership: Mine has only costed me gas and insurance so far, MPGs are in the 23-25 range for me, and nothing has broken on mine (of course, mine only has 58k miles on it, so that helps). --Fun Factor: This car is a BLAST TO DRIVE!!! My only complaint is that it is FWD, and I wish it were rear instead, if it had that and a six-speed, this car would be near-perfect. The car has a really high gear-ratio, I looked it up, and the website said 4:10, but I'm not sure if it's that high. Great for acceleration, and it still gets good mileage, so I guess not too bad, a six-speed would make it so much better though.Oct 07, 2010

Performance -Acceleration 6 -10. Small v6 packs a punch, but small engine lacks urgency. Build Quality - EXCELLENT. This car can handle anything. Appearance - I love the way it looks Cost - Cheap lol I love it. This car is great fun for anyone.Sep 15, 2010

Easy to drive, handles great; at 120,000 miles haven't had any major repairs at all; interior is a nice beige leather, shows a tad of wear, exterior is a generic "high resale" white; one tank of gas lasts about 400 miles and with regular oil changes and checkups, I have sidestepped any major repairs; absolutely most fun cars to drive and I've driven much newer and more expensive car than mine.Aug 22, 2008
