I really like Ford Rangers but I dont know when they went to 134A Freon from the earlier Freon which has become very difficult to find and even very grossly expensive if needed. I believe the change over happened some time in the late 1990s but didnt know exactly what model year. That was one of the main questions I wanted clarification on from the seller and since that and the possibility of rust in the 1997 model due to very few photos was most likely why they never answered my questions on those topics. I bought a different later model Ranger with the 134A A/C unit which was a one owner 85K mile 18 year old vehicle which met my expectations since it was basically a garage queen trade in from a non-smoking retired person.

Bare Bones Every Day Driver. — I purchased this Ford Ranger specifically for good fuel economy, reliability and I always need a truck. It's a four cylinder, five-speed stick, no frills commuter/hauler. It replaced my 1988 Ford Ranger that I purchased new and drove for 25 years! No power options at all (inc. steering), no A/C, wind-up windows, rubber mats with a simple vinyl bench seat. My 1988 Ranger was the most reliable, low-maintenance vehicle I've ever owned which failed me just once in 25 years(starter). The '88 was just about identical to the '97 in that ist also had zero options and had the same drive train. I look forward to driving and working this Ranger for many years to come.

Primary Use: Commuting to work

Pros: Exactly the Ranger I wanted. Great fuel economy. Fantastic reliability.

Cons: Absolutely no options.................... or power!

Small — It's very slow in comparison to a chevy Silverado and uses up the same amount of gas, it has a low profile so it's convenient to work with loading and unloading and not having to reach up with all of my tools.

Primary Use: Utility (towing boats, transporting cargo, etc.)

Pros: small, convenient, truck bed

Cons: Tranny problems, OBD Codes, space in the back-seat, gas

Affordable Good Transportation — love my truck no problems with driving it,it still looks good, handles great, its a cheap, dependable truck,I would drive this to Florida and back with no doubts or fears of breaking down that's how good this truck is,I have drove it for 1yr and 7months and all I have done is changed oil filter and sparkplugs and air filter!

Primary Use: Commuting to work

Pros: 300 miles to a tank of gas!!

Cons: has a few bad spots on passenger side, cracked windsheild

Primary Use: Commuting to work

Pros: Can carry tons of stuff for you, drives well

Cons: Gas

Best Little Truck Ever Built, Payload, Towing, Sporty Feeling And Fuel Efficient At Around 25mpg — I bought this truck new, has nearly 300,000 miles now. Been a great truck. I beat it to death and it begs for more. May not be the fastest but it is fun to drive and always gets the job done. Love the body style or I never would have boguht it. Braking is greatly improved with the explorer axle I put in it. Interior could use a little more leg room

Primary Use: Commuting to work

Pros: Most reliable machine ever built

Cons: leg room

Reliable Ranger — Performance-Does that even exist? Build quality-good did put a timing belt in it, but at 220000 miles that's understandable. Appearance-rather bla but not ugly like the previous gen. Cost of ownership-low mileage is good for a pickup and other than the timing belt all i had to do was change the oil. Fun factor-uh when I do the engine swap it should be fun but the four cylinder isn't good for any thing other than gas mileage.

Primary Use: Commuting to work

Pros: gets good gas milage very reliable

Cons: its a 4 cylinder

Id Buy Another One — Performance of this truck is acceptable. It has a 2.3L I4 and a 5 speed manual transmission. acceleration is a little lacking but brakes awesome and handles well for a pickup truck. build quality is amazing i have never had to do anything but change the oil and all 8 yeah 8 spark plugs. Appearance is great i love the way these trucks look. Gas mileage is awesome average 26 MPG

Primary Use: Commuting to work

Pros: MPG needing to haul small items

Cons: Power, get the 4.0L V6
