For 1997, the Toyota Tacoma got a new grille and headlights on the 2WD. Also, the base engine saw a few improvements, and new option packages were offered for all models.
The 1997 Toyota Tacoma was available in three trim levels: the Regular Cab, the Xtracab, and the SR5 Xtracab. The Regular and the Xtracab were available in 4WD, and the SR5 came standard with it. The base engine was a 2.4-liter, 142-horsepower four cylinder; and a 2.7-liter, 150-horsepower four-cylinder; or a 190-horsepower V6 was also available. Fuel economy varied depending on the engine and cab, and ranged from about 17/19 to 22/28.
Drivers like the 1997 Toyota Tacoma because of its compact size and relatively good gas mileage. They also like its reliability. Some drivers complain that the ride can be a little bumpy, and the 2WD does not handle well in the snow.

Off road capability, 31x10.5 stock tires. Great clearance, short wheel base. Good gas mileage, roughly 20 -22 average. Looks. 5 speed Manual transmision. Never had a single issue with the truck. Never let me down and I really pushed its limits. Overall, Best vehicle I have ever owned! Jan 19, 2012

I Love this truck it has been such a wonderful tool. It is constantly
overloaded with gear and tools for fun and work. I have never had any
mechanical problems but I do all my own maintenence my self. Great
truck and decent gas millage. I have 199,000 mile on it and still going
strong. It needs to have the timing chain and clutch replaced this

I love my truck, I've had two American cars and now this Japanese truck
and I'll never go back. Even with a camper shell, four dudes, and the
back packed with everything we would need to play a show (bass amp,
guitar amp, PA w/head, stands, drum set, pedal boards, guitars and
extras) it still pulled up the Grapevine at an even 60 mph. This truck is
great, the crash test ratings aren't amazing, but I get about 23 mpg
regularly and it still needs a tune-up, so it can get better. All in all, I

4 Wheel drive requires stepping out the car to manually lock the front wheels for my model. Oil changes are a pain the the ass, especially since the oil filter off the the side of engine. Drives great, decent power, very reliable. My new DD as of two or three months ago. Love it.Nov 12, 2008

I have had many Toyota's in the [ast few years and i love each one of them for different reasons. The Toyota Tacoma that i have now is a good truck with almost 200k. It runs well and i take good care of it. I worked on cars for over 5 years so im not an idot when it comes to general maintance or even the bigger stuff. I have done solid axel conversions from ifs, and a 3.0v6 auto swaped to a 3.4v6 manual. So with my experiance i can saflty say that the tacoma is about as good as it gets these days. truck not accelerating
I have a 1997 Toyota Tacoma, As I was driving to work today my truck started slowing down (even though i was still pressing the gas pedal) and my RPM's went up like i was pressing the accelerator without being in gear. It's a 5 speed so my first thought is the clutch or the throttle position sensor. Any help would be greatly appreciated
