Overview
No great changes were made to the 2000 Ford Explorer; after the previous year's exterior redesign, Ford looked at its big-shouldered sport-utility vehicle and found it good. Its impressive cargo capacity (81.6 cubic feet for the four-door models) and solid roadworthiness made it the SUV of choice for hundreds of thousands of buyers.
Another selling point for the 2000 Explorer was its emphasis on safety. No new safety features were introduced for the 2000 model year, but the Explorer was already chock-full of them: from anti-lock brakes to side-curtain airbags to the Reverse Sensing System (a sonar-based array that warned of approaching objects when backing up), the Explorer was all about security.
That said, there was plenty of performance to be found in the Explorer, if that's what you were looking for. Rack-and-pinion steering and (optional) all-wheel drive made the Explorer more agile than many of its competitors. Its all-wheel and four-wheel options gave it the ability to go off-road with ease, even if most of the Explorers out there never got out of the suburbs.
Trim choices for the 2000 Explorer were the two-door Sport trim, and the four-door XL, XLS, XLT, Eddie Bauer, and Limited. Engine offerings included a 5.0 liter V-8 engine with a 215-horsepower output, a 4.0 liter single overhead cam V-6 clocking at 205 horsepower, and the base 4.0 liter V-6 which put out 160 horsepower.

This car is perfect for me! I'm an all around versatile guy who does a little bit of everything. this vehicle performs wonderfully whether i'm hauling my guitar equipment around or pulling a fishing boat. on it's own, it has great power for a 4000lb SUV, 0-60 in around 8 seconds. the suspension is a little loose but i lowered mine a few inches, with no cost for parts, and now it handles great, although the ride is slightly rougher. had the vehicle for 2 years with no major problems, this SUV is the PERFECT balance between Sporty and Utility, getting the best of both worlds. it's very fun to drive and the interior has everything i could ever need.

Liked everything. Really no complaints at all. It ran well for 10 plus years. Almost no repairs were needed. Minor thermostat issues at 40K miles. That is about it. The more I think of it except for being 10 years old and looking a bit out of date it was an excellent all round car for city and highway. Feel safe in getting one.

After having my '96 for 5 years, it and it being my first vehicle and all, i had quite the hard time leaving it but this has been a pretty great replacement. Bought it with 92k miles. Since then I have put on new tires, new sway bar links, new tensioner pulley, new belt, new spark plugs and wires and that has been about it. It came with a 4.10 rear axle with no limited slip however a quick run to the junk yard and a days worth of work and i had myself a 4.10 limited slip. Its not great for gas mileage (19 at best on highway) but it really puts every ounce of power the truck has got down to the pavement and it will haul our 4 place enclosed snowmobile trailer loaded up and everything at 70 mph. ( I also added air shocks in the rear as well so that helps a lot with load leveling and such) Other than that, it sits well on the road, I keep er' cleaned up all the time and she looks sharp, have been EXTREMELY happy with both my Explorer's! Been bullet proof for me!
