Reviews Summary

It could be said that the Mercedes GLS is the S-Class of SUVs, but that’s not entirely accurate. The S-Class sedan commands a significant premium over the GLS, while the legendary G-Class SUV is even more expensive than the S-Class. Nevertheless, for buyers who want a three-row SUV with a three-pointed star on its grille, the 2026 Mercedes-Benz GLS is the right choice because it offers more passenger room and cargo space than any other model in the automaker’s lineup.

Verdict: Large, luxury SUVs are a lot more expensive than they used to be, and while the 2026 Mercedes GLS can’t match them for sheer size and capability, its manageable dimensions, undeniable comfort, refinement, and rewarding driving dynamics make a strong case.

Reviews Summary

The NX is the compact crossover SUV of the Lexus lineup. It’s between the Lexus UX and Lexus RX in size and price, and competes with small luxury crossovers like the Acura RDX, Audi Q5, BMW X3, Genesis GV70, Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class, and Volvo XC60. This second-generation version arrived for the 2022 model year and receives minimal updates for 2026. The previous NX 250 base model is gone, but Lexus made some changes to the lineup to make the hybrid and plug-in hybrid NX models more affordable.

Verdict: The NX is a good value in hybrid form, but otherwise doesn’t feel like a true luxury vehicle.

Look and feel

2026 Mercedes-Benz GLS

9/10

2026 Lexus NX

7/10

The 2026 Mercedes-Benz GLS, available in several trims including the GLS 450, GLS 580, AMG GLS 63, and Maybach GLS 600, offered a luxurious experience with prices ranging from $91,600 to $181,350. Our test vehicle, the GLS 450, featured the new Manufaktur Edition Package, which added sporty elements like 21-inch AMG wheels and exclusive paint options. Despite its high-quality materials and detailing, the GLS 450's interior was not without flaws, as body creaks were noticeable on cold mornings. The dual 12.3-inch displays were well-integrated, and the control layout, though idiosyncratic, was easy to acclimate to.

The 2026 Lexus NX maintained a fresh appearance with its integrated styling elements, including the spindle grille and LED lights. While not as classically handsome as some competitors, the NX's design was cohesive. Offered in various trims and powertrains, including hybrid and plug-in hybrid options, the NX catered to different preferences. However, the base NX 350's interior felt more akin to a high-end Toyota RAV4, lacking the luxury expected from Lexus. The F Sport Handling trim added sporty touches but didn't significantly enhance the driving experience.

Performance

2026 Mercedes-Benz GLS

2026 Lexus NX

5/10

The 2026 Mercedes-Benz GLS 450 was powered by a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine with mild-hybrid assist, delivering 375 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. Coupled with a nine-speed automatic transmission and standard 4Matic AWD, it accelerated from 0-60 mph in 5.8 seconds. The GLS 450 offered a tailored driving experience with a maximum towing capacity of 7,700 pounds and a standard Airmatic adaptive suspension, which significantly improved ride quality. Despite occasional delays in responsiveness, the turbo-six engine provided a sensational sound under hard acceleration.

In contrast, the 2026 Lexus NX 350 F Sport featured a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine producing 275 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque. While the engine was related to the one used in the Toyota Tacoma, it felt more suited for a pickup truck than a luxury SUV. The NX 350's 6.6-second 0-60 mph time was hindered by a lethargic eight-speed automatic transmission. The F Sport Handling upgrade included adaptive dampers and 20-inch wheels, but the ride quality remained uncomfortable, and the steering lacked engagement. The hybrid and plug-in hybrid models offered more compelling performance figures on paper.

Form and function

2026 Mercedes-Benz GLS

2026 Lexus NX

6/10

The 2026 Mercedes-Benz GLS offered standard seven-passenger seating, with a six-passenger configuration available. The GLS excelled in comfort, with features like a four-zone climate control system and heated and ventilated front seats. The Manufaktur Edition Package added fabric pillows to the front-seat head restraints, which were not well-received. The GLS provided generous legroom, although the seating position was low. Cargo space measured 17.4 cubic feet behind the third row, expanding to 84.7 cubic feet with the second row folded down, falling short of some full-size luxury SUVs.

The 2026 Lexus NX offered competitive passenger space for a compact luxury SUV, though with some compromises. Rear-seat headroom was comparable to rivals, but legroom was slightly less. The front seats felt constrained, and outward visibility was hindered by the deep dashboard and large mirrors. Cargo space measured 22.7 cubic feet with the rear seats up and 56.3 cubic feet with them folded, trailing behind competitors. The NX's 2,000-pound towing capacity was also below class-leading figures.

Technology

The 2026 Mercedes-Benz GLS featured dual 12.3-inch displays with the MBUX infotainment system, offering wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a navigation system with augmented reality, and a standard Burmester surround-sound system. The system was user-friendly, with a digital assistant that responded to voice commands, although it occasionally stumbled with specific requests. Additional options included gesture control, a head-up display, and rear infotainment screens.

The 2026 Lexus NX came standard with a 9.8-inch infotainment touchscreen, with a 14-inch display available on higher trims. The NX included a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and six USB ports. Data connectivity packages offered features like cloud-based navigation and digital key functionality. The voice recognition system was helpful but had limitations, and the instrument cluster presented information efficiently, though it resembled older analog displays.

Safety

2026 Lexus NX

8/10

The 2026 Mercedes-Benz GLS boasted nearly 40 safety and driver-assistance systems, including Pre-Safe, Crosswind Assist, and Active Emergency Stop Assist. Parking was facilitated by sensors and a surround-view camera system. However, the GLS lacked hands-free highway driver-assistance technology, requiring active driver participation. The system occasionally braked harder than necessary, but overall, it behaved like a refined partner on longer drives.

The 2026 Lexus NX included the Lexus Safety System+ 3.0 suite, featuring forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and more. Additional features like park assist and a 360-degree camera system were available. The NX received a 2025 Top Safety Pick award from the IIHS, missing the highest rating due to an "Acceptable" score in one crash test. NHTSA ratings were not available at the time.
